COIVIMANDING CFFICER CAPTAIN ALFRED E. PELLERIN III U.S. Captain PELLERIN was born in St. Petersburg, Fla. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1957 and joined the U.S. Navy in February 1958 when he entered the Aviation Officer Candidate Program. Designated a Naval Aviator in July 1959, he was assigned to Helicopter Utility Squadron TWO and was on hand to serve in Heli- copter Training Squadron EIGHT in Pensacola, Fla. and Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron FOUR at NAS Impe- rial Beach, Ca. After completion of Armed Forces Staff College in 1969, Capt PELLERIN became the Rotary Wing Analyst at Naval Safety Center, Norfolk, Va. In 1971 he served as an Officer-in-Charge of two detachments in Helicopter Attack Squadron llightl in Viet Nam. In 1972 Capt PELLERIN became the Wing Safety Officer for Com- mander Fleet Air San Diego. He served as the XO and CO of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron SIX from 1973 to 1975. After a short tour at Commander Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Capt PELLERIN reported aboard the USS OKINAWA ILPH-31 as the Operations Officer. In 1978 he was ordered to the U.S. Naval War College, New- port, Rhode Island and upon completion of the course of instruction reported to Commander Naval Air Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet as Helicopter Training and Readiness Offi- cer, later becoming the Air Anti-Submarine Warfare Train- ing and Readiness Officer. Capt PELLERIN wears the Bronze Star with the Combat V , Air Medal, Individual lCombat Rescuel and nine Strike Flight Awards for over 300 combat missions, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Presi- dential Unit Citation, Viet Nam Cross of Gallantry. Again she returned to the Western Pacific in June with 300 Naval Academy Midshipmen, re- turning to San Diego on August 1, 1970. Her seventh deployment start- ed March 28, 1971 and lasted until November 5, 1971 . During those seven months Vancouver participated in several practice ,. iff-f landings with her embarked Marines. During the last quarter of 1972 Vancouver again underwent a major overhaul. Following re- fresher training, her ninth de- ployment to the Far East com- menced lVlarch 15, 1973.
