gs? 4Ncou'4' THE SHIP'S INSIGNIA USS Vancouver l LPD-2 l, built in New York Naval Ship- yard, Brooklyn, New York,-off- icially, joined the United States Navy on May 11, 1963 and short- ly thereafter proceeded toher des- ignated home . port of San Diego, California, via the Panama Canal. On November 16, 1964, Vane couver departed San Diego on her first .deployment to the Western Pacific. She served with the Sev- enth Fleet during the overseas cruise including participation in the historical amphibious landing at Danang, South Vietnam. . On August 5, 1965, Vancouver again steamed for, Vietnam, this time witha trooplift of Marines, returning to home port, San Diego on October 5, 1965. ,Vancouver again departed San Diego on July 9, 1966 for her most important mission since commissioning. Upon. joining the Seventh Fleet Amphibious Ready Group off Vietnam, she was the first LPD to actually conduct combat operations. Six l6l sep- arate assualt landings were con- ducted during the ensuing nine months of operations. Vancouver returned to San Diego on April 8, 1967. After a short period of leave and upkeep she journeyed north to partici- pate in the Canadian Centennial Naval Assembly at Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. 2 VANCOUVER HISTORY , On February 1, 1968, Vancou- ver departed on her fourth deploy- ment to. the Western Pacific. She participated , in. numerous sup- port missionsfsignificantly con- tributing to boat repairs for forces in the area. She returned home. in September 1969 and went through a major overhaul un- til May of 1969 Vancouver embarked ,on her tenth Westpac October 18, 1974. She played a major role. in the evacuation of Cambodia and Viet- nam and .was subsequently award- ed the Meritorious Unit Citation, the Navy-Unit, Citation and the Armed Forces, Expeditionary Medal for, her role. She returned to San Diego on June 6, 1975. In July of 1975, Vancouver visited her, namesake city of Van- couver, Washington. , On September couver departed to her eleventh cruise. She partici- pated in two major exercises and of Sydney, 1976, van- Westpac for visited the ports Pearl Harbor, Subic Bay Keelung, Hong Kong, Singapore and Inchon. Returning to San Diego on May 21, 1977, Vancouver began a major overhaul at Bethlehem Steel Shipyard in San Pedro, California, July 1977. Completing the overhaul in May 1978, Van- couver returned to her homeport of San Diego where amphibious training, a ,major amphibious fleet exercise, and refresher training, were preparatory for her twelfth Western Pacific Deployment, On August 31, 1978, Van. couver deployed to Westpac. Dur- ing , deployment, Vancouver participated in two major exer- cises and made port visits to Cebu City and Subic Bay, Pusan, Korea, Hong Kong and Yokosuka, Japan. She returned to San Diego on April 11, 1979. . On May 24, 1980. Vancouver left for ,her thirteenth deploy- ment, operating in the Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean..Van- couver visited Subic Bay, Buck- ner Bay, Okinawa, ,,Mombasa, Kenya and Perth, Australiabefore returning. to San Diego November 22, 1980. I A major overhaul ,began on February 22, 1981 and was com- pleted November 8, 1981. Vancouver immediately began to prepare for her fourteenth de- ployment by vigorously training in all facets of amphibious war- fare. On January 30, 1983, Van- couver a member of COMPHIB- RON Three, steamed west to mark her fourteenth cruise to the West- ern Pacific. Vancouver earned high recog- nition for participation in Team Spirit '83 with forces from the Republic of Korea. Exercises were conducted throughout the ii Far East including assualt landings off the coast of Australia. b Vancouver visited ports in Hawaii, Hong Kong, Perth. Okinawa, Yokosuka, Subic Bay and Korea. On July 14, 1983, Vancouver returned to San Diego to begin a leave and upkeep period 'marking the completion of another success- ful cruise. 4.3.

Again she returned to the Western Pacific in June with 300 Naval Academy Midshipmen, re- turning to San Diego on August 1, 1970. Her seventh deployment start- ed March 28, 1971 and lasted until November 5, 1971 . During those seven months Vancouver participated in several practice ,. iff-f landings with her embarked Marines. During the last quarter of 1972 Vancouver again underwent a major overhaul. Following re- fresher training, her ninth de- ployment to the Far East com- menced lVlarch 15, 1973.
