Previous approaches to amphibious warfare have necessitated different types of ships, LPA for troops, LKA forcargo, LSD for boats, and the LPH for helicopters, combined into a small task force to do the job that the single LPD can do independently. Modern warfare, such as in Vietnam, requires amphibious ships that can answer a call for support with rapid, powerful and variable response. The VANCOUVER is that type of ship. She is able to carry over 800 combat equipped Marines plus most of their accompanying weapons and cargo at a speed in excess of 20 knots. She employs both amphibious landing craft and helicopters in effecting the over- the-beach assault against the enemy. Troop spaces aboard the LPD are roomy, air conditioned quarters capable of supporting Marines comfortable for extended periods at sea. Facilities for handling cargo include a large freight elevator, automated pallet conveyors, V x ww 3' S 'pg' bg,,wQ..... nm inf' N CDF THE LPD forklifts, bridge cranes, and pallet jacks. This combination of modern, dependable cargo handling equipment all but eliminates wasted effort in cargo handling and insures extremely rapid reaction time for embarkation or debarka- tion. The story of the LPD has been actively dramatized by VANCOUVER. She, as mentioned above was the first LPD to be tested in the Vietnam war zones. She demonstrated the versatility and reliability of the LPD in numerous combat situations. While on many occasions, heavy seas prevented LPA's and LKA's from lowering their boats during amphibious assaults, VANCOUVER's pre-loading techniques in the protective well deck of the ship enabled her to off-load on schedule and provide needed support for the Marine operation ashore. In short, the LPD offers all the tools of amphibious warfare in their most modern and efficient forms. All encompassing facilities offer the Amphibious Task Force Commander choice, not chance, in seeing that the jobs get done. We left with a feeling of pride and returned with a sense of fulfillment knowing that we were asked to do our best and to make whatever sacrifices were needed to keep the sea lanes of communications open and to make our contribution to world freedom. We did that unquestionably and so it is altogether fitting that we dedicate the pages that follow to the memory of that commitment. Hopefully as you page through the book, you will recall that service to our Navy and to our Country. I will always think of VANCOUVER and its superb crew with a deep sense of pride and appreciation! 'Barney' Reeves B Division ,,., ,, ..f ' , V tw sta, WJ IVA 4.0 THE SNIPES LAMENT Now each of us, from time to time, has gazed upon the sea, Watching the warships pulling out, to keep this country free, And most of us have read a book or heard a lusty tale But theres a place within each ship that legend fails to reach. Its down below the waterline, it takes a living toll A hot metal living hell, that sailors call the hole. lt houses engines run by steam, that make the shafts go round, A place of fire and noise and heat, that beats your spirits down Are of molded Gods without remorse, are nightmares in a dream. Whose threat that from the fires roar is like living in doubt That any minute would with the scorn, escape and crush you out Where turbines scream like tortured souls alone and lost in hell, As ordered from above somewhere, they answer every bell. The men who keep the fires lit, and make the engines turn Are strangers to the world of night and rarely see the sun. They have no time for man no tolerance for fear, Their aspect pays no living thing, the tribute of a tear, For there's not much men can do that these men haven't done, Beneath the decks deep in the hole, to make the engines run, And every hour of every day, they keep the watch in hell, For if their fires ever fail, their ship is a useless shell. When ships converge to have a war, upon an angry sea, The men below just grimly smile, at what their fate might be They're locked in down below like men fordoomed, who hear no battle cry, lt's well assumed that if they are hit, the men below will die, For every day is a war down there, when the gauges all read red, Six hundred pounds of steam can kill you mighty dead. So if you ever write their sons, or try to tell their tale, The very words would make you hear a fired furnaces wail. ' And people, as a general rule, don't hear of these men of steel. So little's heard about the place that sailors call the hole, But I can sing about this place, and try to make you see, The hardened life of men down there, cause one of them is me. l've seen these sweat soaked hero's fight in superheated air, To keep their ship alive and right, though no one knows they're there, And thus they'll fight for ages on, till warships sail no more, Amid the boiler's mighty heat, and the turbines hellish roar. So when you see a ship pull out to meet a warlike foe, Remember faintly if you can, 'The Men Who Sail Below'. At full steam and as close as 50 yards apart, it takes the coordinated effort of a finely honed team. Sharpshooting Gunnersmates, fine steering Quartermas- ters, strong and highly proficient Boatswain- mates and a knowledgeable bridge team all play a vital role in this evolution. Thanks to underway replenishments, the crew most always has a fresh supply of food, unusually bad movies, mail sometimes, and a full tank of diesel fuel to keep us operational. Nicias of Athens: Speech to the Athenian forces at Syrcuse, 414 B.C. In landing operations, retreat is impossible. To surrender is as ignoble as it is foolish . . .Above all remember that we as the attackers have the initiative. We know exactly what we are going to do, while the enemy is ignorant of our intentions and can only parry our blows. We must retain this tremendous advantage by always attacking: rapidly, ruthlessly, viciously and without rest. George S. Patton lr.: General Order to the Seventh Army before Sicily landings, 27 june 1943. A landing against organized and highly trained opposition is probably the most difficult undertaking which military forces are called upon to face. George C. If the Captain, being lord of his vessel, see's that the week's work is good he will oft times proclaim the seventh day, a day of rest. The day is dubbed 'Holiday Routine' and what it means in actuality is that if your lucky enough to not have something pressing, you can relax and take part in the day's events. Besides several different religious services, the days festivities include a scrumptious fantail bar-b-que, rock-'im sock-'im smokers, matinee movies, talent shows, all day television, sunbathing at steel beach or simply relaxing with a good book or a friendly card game. So the men arrived safely from their mission, hopefully with a goal complete and a dream fulfilled. The notion and image of home and familiar streets and people seemed to draw the vessel to its berth by merit alone, as the crowd on the pier could barely be contained, awed with anticipation by this ship which mysteriously enters homeport laden with treasurers and memories of lands so far away. The ship is its crew, whose love for the places they've seen and they've done is exceeded only by the love for their own family and friends. There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is a society where none intrudes By the deep sea, and music in its roar: I love not man the less, but nature more, From these our interviews, in which I steal From all I may be, or have been before, To mingle with the universe, and feel What I can ne'er express, yet cannot all conceal. Roll on, thou deep and dark blue Ocean, -roll! Ten thousand fleets sweep over thee in vain, Man marks the earth with ruin, -his control Stops with the shore, -upon the watery plain Lord Byron, from Childe Harold's Pilgrimage EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: 102 Robert B.
