Baseball Mr. Marshall Shields, Mr. Bill Wood, Comrltes Vancouver won their first two conference games but lost their third. The Trappers started their season with three practice games. In the first, they easily downed Central Catholic of Portland, 6-2. The second game was won from Columbia Prep, 5-2. 'Clark College was next in line to fall before the Trappers by a score of 5-4. For their first conference game, the Trappers traveled to Camas. John Westby allowed the Papermakers only one run on five hits, while his team-mates earned nine runs. In the Longview game at Longview, Westby pitched a perfect game until the fifth inning where the Lumberjacks got their only hit and only run. The bats of the Trappers still held good to get eleven hits and earn seven runs. For more practice, the Trappers again played Clark College and were downed 5-0. Journeying to Battle Ground, the Trappers received their first con- ference defeat. The Tigers got three runs on six hits, while Vancouver's six hits pushed only two runs across. The top pitcher for the year was John Westby, assisted by Dick Halverson, who also doubled in the outfield. Scott Lovely held down the initial sack with Keith Hanes on second, while Duane Allen played third base and Jack Edgar covered short stop. Utility infielders were Jerry Lodge, Edward Ellison, and Darrel Wood. In the outfield were Jim Volker, left field, Bob Skaaden, right field, and Dick Moore, center field. Members of the Junior Varsity team were Erwin Ericksen, Bennie Dacus, Don Omvig and Bob Vilander, pitchers, Mike Witter, catcher, Darrel Wood, first base, Marvin Woolf and Gordon Torrey, second base, Elwyn Felts, third base, Jerry Brandon, short stop, Roy Hutts, Dennis Wolken, Gordon Lehr, Bob Williams, Don Olson and Duane Wilson, outfielders. Harvey Heimbuch was manager.

The Trapper Cross-Country team this year competed in four tri- angle meets in the Portland loop and completed their season at the Hill Military meet. In the first meet, Vancouver Won second place against Commerce and Roosevelt at Roosevelt. In the Varsity division, Bob Buker placed second. The second time, the Trappers Won a first place in a triangle meet With Jefferson and Washington at Benson. The third meet was lost to the Lincoln and Benson teams at Benson. The Trappers regained their stride by Winning their meet at Grant, competing against Franklin and Grant. To finish the season the Trappers moved to the Hill Military course where they were defeated. The first team failed to place, but the Second Team placed fifth. Fourteen minor letters were awarded, but no one on the team quali- fied to Win a major UV . AWARDS! Tennis Mr. John Wood, Coach The 1949 tennis squad was seriously ham- pered by the loss of six members from the 1948 team. However, a strong turn-out of sophomores boded ill for their opponents in future years. The team played with Jefferson, Roose- velt, Cathlamet, Longview, Central Catholic and Clark College, a schedule of ten matches altogether. Number one player this year was Don Whitenack, with Jim George holding down the number two spot. Both these boys were juniors. Most improved player was Don Gai- ser, a sophomore, playing as number three man, while Jack Sloan and Bob Wilkerson played number four and number five respec- tively. - ..,a-YH 1.4-ft to right: Merle Templeton, Bob Jones, Leo Fmnk, liolu Ilawlaln, illl'ilill'tl Payne, Ervin l !'zL1iK. Swimming Mr. Ward James, Coach Competing for the first time since 1942, the Vancouver High School Swimming Team took part this year in five meets. Despite the fact that they lost their meets, the boys proved themselves capable against Long- view, Salem, West Linn, N.E. Portland Y.M.C.A. and the Portland Aquatic Club. They attended the State meet in Seattle. One advancement made during the year was the decision of the Student Council to award major V letters to interscholastic swimmers.
