Basketball Pre-Season Warmup Vancouver opened their 1948 - 49 basketball season with Cleve- land of Portland, who downed the Trappers by a score of 45 to 21. After one more week of organization the Trappers set back Benson Tech 35 to 31. Cleveland was then met in a return fray and was beaten by an improved Trapper team 48 to 35. Next on the list came Hillsboro, who topped Vancouver 45 to 34. Vancouver then easily defeated the Washougal Panthers to the tune of 42 to 27. The Trappers then took to the road for a four game series in southern Oregon. In their first game the Traps lost a hard fought battle to Medford 29 to 35, but came back the next night to turn the tables 36 to 28. The Red and White had little trouble in defeating St. Mary's Academy of Medford 59 to 16. In their last game of the trip the Trappers took a thrilling 29 to 27 decision from Grants Pass. The Shieldsmen wound up their pre-season schedule by drop- ping a heatbreaker to Hillsboro 31 to 32. Conference Games Combining experience with hard work, the veteran Trapper squad finished second place in the southern division of the S.W.W. conference. Headed by Coach Dutch Shields, the Red and White won seven league games, While losing only three. After a successful pre-season warm-up, the Trappers dropped their first two conference games to favored Battle Ground and Longview. With determination the hustling Trappers came roaring back to win their next six games. After winning easily from Camas, Vancouver squeezed by Kelso 38-36 and went on to defeat Chehalis 48-41. Starting the second half of league play, an inspired Trapper team traveled to Battle Ground to upset the Tigers 40-38, and re- turned home the next week to edge the unbeaten Longview Lumber- jacks 38-37. After a convincing win over Camas, the Trappers were knocked out of a tie for the championship by the underrated Kelso team 40-46. Vancouver closed the conference by defeating Chehalis 60-47. Climaxing the season the Trappers humbled Battle Ground 48-31 to earn the play-off game with Aberdeen for a State Tournament berth. The weary Trappers, with spirits still high, trekked to Cen- tralia only to lose a heart breaking game to the Bobcats, 40-44. Jack Edgar, Tracy King and Jerry Miller received All-Confer- ence recognition for their outstanding performance during the sea- son. Bob Hopkins was sidelined by doctor's orders during the last half of the season.
