Baseball At the conclusion of the first round of play Vancouver won four games and lost one. In the season opener 'Camas defeated the Trappers 3-0. Against Meadows High, Van- couver turned three hits and a number of Meadows errors and walks into six runs. In the Longview game seven hits became three runs, while the Trappers fielded well behind Guisness and the Lumberjacks were shut-out. In the Battle Ground game Vancouver got five hits off Lahti, one a triple by Gordon Harris, another a homer by Lou Reymond, making altogether five runs. The best Battle Ground could do was two hits and two runs. Top pitcher for the year was Frank Guis- ness, assisted by Bob Skaaden and John Westby. First base position was held by Bruce Bork and Jack Trombley supported by Varsity Season Record 1948 Gaylon Dacus and Clarence Nelson. Catching Bruce Bork and J ack Trombley supported by Andrews, Bob Wilson, and Bob Gibbons. Chuck Klieber was second base with Ken Sawyer and Marvin Woolf as substitutes. Third base position was held by Duane Allen or Jake Mortenson with Mike Witter under- study. Gordon Harris was shifted from third to short this year, and was supported by Dick Smith and Jerry Lodge. Outfielders this year were Jim Volker, Maurice Bottemiller, Jack Riley and Darrel Allen. Jack Finley, Bill Drury, Gerry Lude- man, Junior Schmelzer, Neil Lyal, Bob Morri- son, Guy Woodings, John Robinson, Jim Scotton, Phillip Hoke, Walter Moeller, Duane Ross and Wesley Hylen were utility out- fielders. Managers were Harvey Heimbuch, Verne Liebelt and James Martin. Vancouver, 47, Jefferson, CNW: Benson, 35112. The Trappers lost their first meet by a half point in a return engagement with Jefferson and Benson. Eugene Perry won the 220, Larry Smith, the shot put, George Stecher, the pole vault. The Trappers missed the support of several members of the squad who were unable to participate. April 30, Roosevelt, Portland. Roosevelt, 57, Grant, 29V2: Vancouver, 3529. Leaving most of the distance men at home for the Longview Relays, the Trappers fell before a strong Roosevelt squad. The only firsts salvaged by Vancouver were the 440 yard dash and the 880 relay. May 1, Longview Relays. Vancouver overpowered a field of seven teams by gaining 7515 points. Longview was the near- est to the Trappers with 4416, Centralia, 35, Puyallup, 27, Chehalis, 23, Kelso, 5, Forest Grove, Oregon, 3, Battle Ground, 1. It was the sixth win for Vancouver in the nine years of the relays. The Trappers won the mile relay and the junior 100, 440 relay, 2 mile relay, 880 relay, placed fourth in the senior 00. Vancouver, 65w, Longview 27, Battle Ground, 1526, Washougal, 11, Kelso, 10, State Deaf School, 7, Meadows, 495, Evergreen, 395, Vancouver Trappers splashed their way to victory qualifying sixteen men in elev- en events. Qualifying were: Hancuff, high and low hurdles, relay, Leahy and Vern Perry, mile, Parsons, 100 yard dash: Miller, high jump, Young, discus, DeClark, low hurdles, broad jump, Walling, broad jump, Buker, 880, Smith, shot put, relay, Prediletto, relay, Eugene Perry, relay, 100 yard dash, 220. Others: Mark Hardie, Bob Little. Tennis Mr. John wood, coach The Trappers had their best tennis team since the war this year. As of April 29 they had won three matches with no defeats. Victims of the Trapper attack were Jefferson of Portland, Cathlamet and Mc- Minnville. Big guns of the team were Bill Hoy, Dick Laws, Bob Cheek, Ed Osborn, Don Whitenack, John Lirning and Chuck Harris. Leading con- tenders for vacant berths left by Liming, Laws and Osborn, seniors, were Mark Hardie, Jim George and Bud Aiken, Juniors. Along with having a successful season the Trapper net squad ob- tained from the Student Council major letter awards for tennis.
