Mr. Conover, Vice Principal, directs the League. For their most important project the Boys' League sponsored a War Bond and Stamp sale. Second Vice President Jim Lawrence, Secretary Le- Roy Lund, and Mr. Conover promoted the sale. They used the organization of the advisory groups, having each advisory salesman report to the Student Body office to obtain stamps and bonds for the students in l'Ive1'f-It lichen: their Tuesday meetings. From time to time they issued bulle- mf-sulfur tins, showing the relative amounts of sale of the thirty-two advisory groups, and made pep talks, urging all to save their money for stamps and bonds. They expected to exceed a 520,000 goal by the end of the school year. On several occasions the Boys' League raised money for the Red Cross for such things as ditty bags and playing cards to be distributed to service men in hospitals. For the latter . .. , they contributed S39.99. A Five of the boys, Jerry Petrey, Er- . . smart Rivlvy nest Conger, Ivan Peters, Don Henderson X .. ' ' To honor the former Vancouver High School boys who have gone into the armed services, the Boys' League designed and purchased a Service Flag. This Service Flag was presented to the Student Body on May 14, by the Boys' League President, Everett DeLong. The boys plan to have a list of all service men near the place where this flag is displayed. Challenges were offered by Vancouver but were not accepted by the conquerors of other State leagues. The Trappers started off in impressive style by rolling over powerful Jefferson of Portland, 13-0. The Vancouver eleven pushed the Longview Lumberjacks all over the field, but to no avail. The Trappers could not overcome, in a last minute touchdown, the goal and safety chalked up earlier by the Lumberjacks. Final score, 6-9. The Red and White squad definitely got the defeat complex out of their system, as history proves, for they promptly proceeded to blitz down such league high schools as Olympia, Hoquiam, Centralia, Camas, Aberdeen and the Highlanders from Kelso. Vancouver's undisputed Southwest Washington championship was determined by the Longview Lumberjacks' breaking the deadlock between Vancouver and Kelso, by the Lumberjacks timely defeat of the Scotties. From the south came word that Klamath Falls High School, claimant to the Oregon gridiron title, would like to meet the best eleven in Washington. They chose Vancouver. So the Trappers gathered up their gear and journeyed down to southern Oregon. Odds before the game were about 6 to 1, favoring the Pelicans. That game will be one long remembered by all participants, for Vancouver scored 20-7 against Klamath Falls. The team played magnificently, impressively, and Bustin' Bert Allinger turned in the best game of his brilliant high school career. After the smoke of battle had cleared, Vancouver lWash.l was crowned the new Oregon champion. Victorious Lettermen: Charley Officer and Gene Flock, ends, Keith Neely and Al Butcher, tacklesg Stan Gomulkiewicz and Everett DeLong, guards: Stu Ripley, center: Dick Jacobsen, quarterbackg Bert Allinger and Louie Grant, halfbacksg Bill Hoff, full back. Bert Allinger, graduating this year, is one of the rare four-year lettermen of V.H.S. He and Keith Neeley made the All-Star Conference football team for the sec- ond year, and Charles Officer and Louis Grant made it for their first year. Two banquets were given the Champions at the end of the season. The first was at the Evergreen Hotel with the Elks' Club as hosts. Mr. DeYoung presided over the annual banquet sponsored by the High School. Coach Dutch Shields and Captain Lewis Grant reviewed the season. 1942 Schedule Sept. 18--Vancouver 14 0 Jefferson ....... ....... H ere Sept. 25-Vancouver 6 9 Longview ....... ....... Here 151 I The 1943 edition of the Trapper cage squad under the tutelage of Mr. Marshall Shields weathered a stormy season to emerge, if not the topmost team, at least the fightingest outfit in the Southwest League. There were two games on the winning side of the ledger against six in the red. The Trappers captured two tilts from Camas, 47-19, and 42-28, but lost two apiece to Kelso, Longview and Castle Rock. However, the V.H.S. quintet played twelve non- league games, winning fifty per cent of them. Lynn Ryan led the season's scoring with 75 points. The other members followed in this order: Vern Kindsfather, 623 Perry Holloman, 605 Bert Allinger, 483 Bill Hoff, Captain, 435 Johnny White, 353 Ron Daniels, 20. Basketball letters were won by Bert Allinger, Johnny White, Lynn Ryan, Bill Hoff, Vern Kindsfather, Perry Holloman, Dick Waters, LeRoy Lund, Herman Sol- berg, Ron Daniels, Bob Patterson, Bob Sealey, and John Cunningham. Dick Dungan was one of the reserves. 76 ubhn Cwmirykam MN, 'ss HU 2 X Aww' wisfpk Lynn TR VII? gf , .,,, ,, Dia-1:06013 Bd 5lUfy SF ,if g f Vrrn Imadsfvflizf' P FE:-ry Holland! 1335 Errrfff Dr! ff-:ww W K N Orauvfri' f 4155 Q - S nr. Because of the war time rationing of gasoline, Vancouver has played Portland schools. The first meet of the year was with Washington and Commerce, the all-relay meet. The squad brought home their first win with 75 points. Washington had 40, and Commerce 11. Two weeks later the Trappers had conquered Franklin and Lincoln. On April 30, the Trappers stopped Grant's prehistoric winning streak by getting 61 W, points to Grant's 58114, and Roosevelt's 111!3. To make a clean sweep over all Port- land high schools, the Trappers defeated Jefferson and Benson. Vancouver High cinder stars reigned supreme over their own ground, when they triumpheg over Longview, Battle Ground, and Washougal in the elimination meet on April . The 1943 season's most consistant winners for the Trappers were John Cunning- ham, 440 yard dashg Richard Paeth, 880 yard rung Stan Gomulkiewicz and Bob Paeth, mile rung Jim Edwards, low and high hurdlesp Dick Jacobson, discus throwingg Stu- art Ripley, weight throwing, Kenny Roberts, broad jumpg Bob Teal, 100 yard dashg Frank Heller and Don Millar, high jump. Relay team C880 yd.l: John Cunningham Bob Teal, Don Millar and Dean Gibson. The Trappers' last meet of the 1943 season was May 15, the District Meet at Centralia. Vancouver won 45 points, nine more than its nearest competitor, Cen- tralia, and again brought home the Southwest Washington championship. 1943 Schedule April 2-Portland Relay Meet at Commerce April 16-Portland Triangular Meet at Commerce April 22--Portland Triangular Meet at Franklin April 28-Vancouver - Longview Telegraphic Meet April 30--Portland Triangular Meet at Grant May 7-Portland Triangular Meet at Jefferson May 8-Elimination Meet at Vancouver May 15-District Meet at Centralia Kneeling: Dick Spady, Bob Hunter.
