Sporting a T formation, the Jeffs were top heavy favorites to win, but a stubborn, fighting Trapper squad held them to a scoreless tie on a muddy field. The Red and White warriors unleashed a spectacular pass- ing attack at Longview, scoring 19 to 7 at the end of the third quarter. But the Jacks took to the air, winning 20 to 19. The Aberdeen Bobcats next invaded Trapper territory. In a tough, bruising game, the Trappers bounced back to take this contest by a score of 12 to 6 on sheer power. Only the final gun prevented a larger score as the Trappers were knocking again at the Aberdeen goal line as the game ended. The Lincoln High team, last year's State Champs from Tacoma, next came to Trapperville for a return engagement. After a promising first quarter, the Trappers faded before a relentless Lincoln attack, and the Abes returned to Tacoma on the long end of a 19 to 7 score. Vancouver next tackled the Olympia squad on the local field. This game was played in a typical Olympia fog and the spectators saw but little of the contest. Except for one break-away run, which netted an Olympia score, this was a very even contest, but the game ended Olympia 7, Vancouver 0. Hitting the road again, the Red and White gridders in- vaded the lair of the Centralia Tigers. Behind a hard charging line, the Vancouver backs rolled up the yardage and returned to Vancouver with a Tiger pelt and a 19 to 6 victory. Another road trip took the Trappers to Hoquiam, where they played a hard-fought contest. With the Grizzlies taking advantage of all the breaks, Vancouver took this one on the chin by a count of 13 to 7. Kelso's Highlanders next invaded the home field for Van- couver's Annual Homecoming game. An inspired Trapper eleven playing fine offensive ball produced a welcome victory for the occasion and sent the Scotties home stinging under the blows of a 27 to 6 defeat. For the first time in many years, the Everett Seagulls traveled south for a game under the local arcs. In a loosely played game, the Gulls avenged their defeat of last year and returned to their home port 7 to 0 victors over the Red and White. The Trappers ended their 1945 season against the Camas Papermakers, at Camas. A tricky and alert Camas eleven out- scored the Traps 13 to 0 before an enthusiastic Thanksgiving Day crowd. Vancouver made 9 first downs to 2 for Camas, but simply could not reach pay dirt. 102 Southwest Washington Conference Standings Win Lose Tie Points Olympia O 2 8 Longview .... Home and away games were played with five opponents, with the Trappers breaking even, winning five and losing five. Central Catholic was beaten twice, but Hillsboro and Rainier each won a pair from the Trapper squad. The Red and White squad won one and lost one to The Dalles and took a couple from the Ogden Meadows Hornets. This was tough pre-season competition, as all four of the Oregon teams later participated in the Oregon State Championship tourna- ment. Toughened by this heavy warm-up schedule. Vancouver opened conference play against the Kelso Highlanders. The Trappers dropped this first game, but avenged this loss by winning the second round game on the local court. Both games were won from the Centralia Tigers, and the Trappers were also successful in both of their meetings with the Chehalis Bearcats. The Longview Lumberjacks were doped to have a strong team and events certainly worked out that way by winning both of their games from the Red and White. Battle Ground, with the strongest team ever produced at that school, broke even with the Traps in two hard-fought games. Battle Ground was thoroughly beaten on the local court, but edged the Trappers by a single point in the return game at Battle Ground. Both games were won from those traditional upriver rivals, the Camas Papermakers, in two well-played games. The season ended with Vancouver in third place in Con- ference standings behind Longview and Battle Ground. The Trappers won 10 and lost 4 in conference play. At the start of the season only one letterman returned from the 1945 Varsity, that being Rod Landon. Five lettermen from the 1946 Varsity will return next year. Four will be Seniors with one year's competition, and one a Junior with two years' competition. In the line-up for 1947 should be Lyle Woolf, Ed Rood, Bill Osborne, and Wally Sandstrom, present Juniors, and Frank Guisness, a Sophomore. This quintette promises to be a strong starting line-up for the next season. 104 Southwest Washington Conference Standings Won Lost Percent Longview ....,......... ..... 1 0 2 .833 Battle Ground ...... ,.... 3 .750 Vancouver ......... ..... 4 .667 Kelso ......... .... 8 .333 Centralia ...... ..... 8 .333 Chehalis ...... ..... 8 .333 Camas ....... ..... 9 .250 1945-46 Season Record Jan. 4 Vancouver 24 Kelso 38 There Jan. 11 Vancouver 33 Centralia 22 There Jan. 15 Vancouver 34 Camas 29 Here Jan. 18 Vancouver 26 Longview 35 There Jan. 25 Vancouver 39 Chehalis 28 Here Feb. 1 Vancouver 29 Battle Gd. 23 Here Feb. 8 Vancouver 27 Kelso 26 Here Feb. 12 Vancouver 21 Battle Gd. 22 There Feb. 15 Vancouver 30 Centralia 24 Here Feb. 19 Vancouver 34 Camas 28 There Feb. 21 Vancouver 23 Longview 38 Here Mar. 1 Vancouver 3 Chehalis 27 There Awards John Downer ....................
