At the beginning of the year the girls chosen to attend the instruction class for Big Sisters were assigned to assist from four to eight new girls in registering and getting acquainted with the school and its traditions. To promote friendship, the Girls' League planned a costume mix, a matinee dance and a half-Tolo dance. A variety of assemblies included the Instal- lation Ceremony, a program on Women's Services by a WAC, a Spar, a Marine, a stu- dent round table on girls' problems , a play, the Three Timer, given by the GAA, a talk on China by Dr. Snyder, and the senior pro- gram, the Honor Assembly, at which sen- ior girls were presented with rose buds for outstanding services, and the Whitfield cup was awarded to the Inspiration girl. They used the organization of the ad- visory groups, each of which has a special salesman who reports to the Boys' League office to obtain stamps and bonds for the students in their Tuesday advisory meetings. The League issued monthly bulletins, show- ing the relative amounts of the sale of the various advisory groups, and made pep-talks urging everyone to save his money for stamps and bonds. During a single day's campaign, December 7, for one jeep, they collected enough stamps and bonds to buy three and a half jeeps, approximately 370,000 The Boys' League arranged transportation to the Red Cross Blood Bank for those stu- dents and faculty members desiring to do- nate blood. Sixty-seven pints were donated. Three tons of waste paper were collected by a group organized by the Boys' League. They collected sixteen bags of used clothing for children in warring countries. As a Christmas contribution to the school, the Boys' League secured and decorated a Christmas tree for the library. In their assemblies the boys heard the Reverend John W. Beard and Mr. Henderson speak. A noon dance for all students was held in the old gym. High School Band at Shipyards Mr. Wallace Hannah, Director A month before the nineteen forty-three summer vacation, Mr. Tom Murphy of the Vancouver shipyards Bond Department talked to the band about employment at the Kaiser yard, and after school was out seventy five percent of the band was em- ployed Other emyloyees from the yard joined the band, and weekly practices were held Tuesday evenings under the direction of Mr. The band played a weekly noon concert, and sometimes gave swing shift and grave- yard programs for their fellow workers. They also played for the ship launchings. The students were commended for their good work as entertainers and as employees of the yard. They also sang for the Christmas program and the music concert. An enjoyable combination of harmony and rhythm made the boys' quartette one of the most popular music groups in school. They appeared on many programs including the Vodvil and assemblies, at Lodges, and at U.S.O. benefits. The Christmas program, a McLough- lin Heights Junior High School assembly, and annual concerts were among the outstanding performances given by the orchestra this year. Small combinations of members of the orchestra composed the string ensembles, and they have played for various programs in school. The String Trio with Maxine Kil- patrick and Gretchen Schaefer, violins, and Barbara Smith, viola were featured on the high school broadcast of Schools at War. Another trio, composed of Bonnie Addleman, violin, Lawton Hull, cello, and Bill Copps, piano has entertained at many lodges and luncheons. They also played for the opening breakfast of the Red Cross Drive, held at the Kaiser Shipyard. Centralia 6 At Centralia, both Ken Leach and Tom Er- nest played bang-up ball. The points were scored by Wellman and Jocobson. The following week the Trappers turned their guns on a luckless Longview quintette to bury them under an avalanche4fof baskets. Camas went down under the Vancouver barrage as did Castle Rock the following week. Treking to Chehalis, the Red and White quintette knocked the League leading Bob- cats off their pedestal, but ran into bad luck the next night when they were handed a de- feat by a red-hot Centralia team. Red and White returned with interest the defeat dealt to them by Kelso early in the sea- son, by whipping the Highlanders. Longview fell victim to the Trappers for the second time on their own court. The next tilt on the docket was Vancouver against Centralia. The Tigers had a lead of eight points late in the fourth period, but the Trappers valian- ly reduced it to three. Next was a dual meet at Vancouver with Washington High of Portland. The Trappers won by a 5 point margin, 64-59. Another dual meet with Roosevelt resulted in a 54-44 score for the Teddies. Again the Trappers packed their bags and journeyed to Longview, bringing back a winning 82-69 score from the Lumber- jacks. Swift-footed Richard Paeth, running the 880, set an all-time high record of 2:00.4, lowering the previous record time of 2:40. Lanky Clem Eischer set a sec- ond V.H.S. Conference record in running the mile by sprinting it in 4:36.5, bettering the preivious record by four and one-tenth sec- on s. Fifteen men qualified for the finals. Jack Haney tied for a place in the broad jump, but lost his chance to compete in the District Meet by the flip of a coin. Larry Batzold, George Keith, and Bill Boettcher were also tied for a place in the pole vault, but Batzold got the nod to compete in the District Meet. Paeth set a new district record for the 880-yd. run by clipping the time down to 1:59.6. Ei- schen likewise set a new district record in the mile, shrinking the time'to 4:35.6. Cunning- ham stepped the 440 in 253.2 to gain a first, In the shot put Henry Habegger took sec- ond followed by Jacobson, third and Bill Mc- Connell, fourth. Louie Wellman gained a tie for third in the pole vault, while the relay team of Gibson, Nash, B.
