Q 4 5,1 Foreword With the presentation of this Alki we look back upon the past year of High School during which we have enjoyed memorable days and happy times recorded in these pages. Americans everywhere are emphasizing the fact that this is a country of which they should bc proud and which they should be willing to defend. Because we feel that it is so essential to ea-ch person in our community to believe this, we have followed the theme of patriotism in color scheme and in symbolic stars, suggesting our United States. The students salute the flag of the greatest of all nations, wherein all men are created equal, where the hum- blest born may rise to the greatest heights, where life, lib- erty, and the pursuit of happiness is the heritage of all, no matter what his station in life. An in- creasing seriousness has pervaded our country and this has been reflected to some degree in our student body. Our school has been aware of the necessity of upholding American ideals and of being willing to make sacrifices in order that we may continue in the paths of democracy. During' this year the faculty and students have cooperated in many commendable activities. In our academic work, in athletics, and in music we have made an enviable record. To all I extend the greetings of Vancouver High School. Henry DeYoung Principal of Vancouver High School FOURTEEN DAN O. BAOKMAN, A University of hington. Gle , -Orchestra. Hall Mary Wilkinson Miss MacDonald Nancy Hogg Miss Porter Dorothy Hill Mrs. Powers Noryne Grams Miss Wintler The Junior Class Council, composed of the class officers and Advisory Group presi- dents, met every Monday the fourth period to discuss class business and plan class activities. The Advisory presidents reported on Tuesdays to their various groups the things to be voted upon, or the committee work to be chosen and carried out. The Advisory groups took as a subject for general discussion in their Thursday meetings the development and the qualities of a desirable personality, with the vice presidents being responsible for these programs. A contest was held among the Junior groups to determine the peppiest. This was carried out by a point system, awards being given to individuals and groups for activity credits. At each class meeting and advisory group, volunteering in turn, furnished an entertaining program. At one meeting each group presented some musical number, the one judged best winning points for the contest. Mrs. Powers' Mr. Shields', and Miss Wintler's groups were responsible for three programs, while for the other meetings talent was selected from the class in general. Each semester the Juniors gave a program for the Student Body. The first one was a variety show, including several musical numbers and skits: the second was a one-act play. The Juniors sponsored a student body old fashioned basket social, a noon movie and a matinee dance to raise money for the J unior-Senior prom, the climax of the career of the Junior Class and a succesful social event because of the cooperation of all Junior advisory groups. The theme chosen for the Prom was Astrology. The ceiling of the new gym was made of blue paper with the only light shining on the floor coming through stars, and the walls were covered with the signs of the zodiac. Each dance program told the fortune of the students according to the sign under which they were beorn. Altogether the Junior Class did its share this year towards futhering activities and carrying out traditional events, and so had a successful, busy and extremely enJoyable year. Win or lose, he always has a big smile and an encouraging word for MR JAMESD MILLER Mr James D Miller plans and directs intramural sports for those boys who do not take part in the inter- scholastic contests Throughout the year he provides every kmd of sport possible to increase constantly the number of boys who partlclpate Mr. Miller, who has the . well being of the boys m mind, deserves recognition for the fine work which he accomplishes. -A EIGHTY FIVE fu' iii MR. MARSHALL J. SHIELDS Marshall fDutchJ Shields is a football and basketball coach par excellence. Mr. Shields is a quiet, sincere coach and friend, who, with his knowledge and love of football and basketball, teaches them thoroughly. His teams have admired his character and have shovsm that admiration in their performances. He is the man who inspired them to attain a goal never before reached by Vancouver High School, the Southwest Washington football championship. -Fred Provo -Charles Burchfield MR. CARL GUSTAFSON Friendliness, cheerfulness, and helpfulness are the essentials of a good coach, and are the outstanding quali- ties of Mr. Carl Gustafson. With these characteristics, he has patience and fairness which gain the respect of the boys with whom he works. He likes to win, but he makes it clear that fine sportsmanship, the race well run, the game well played, is more important than the victory. -Andrew Stevenson -Everett DeLong -Bob Srmdifur BIG-HTY SIX 5 y FoQ12g5LL 1 Playing hard, all-arqnngl football the entire season, Vancguvefs Trappers established probably the outstanding seasonal record' for any high school team in the State when they rolled through their entire ten game season without a defeat or a tie. After winning their first three games in story-book styleg 13 to 12 from Jefferson, Portland's co- championsg 7 to 6 from Longview's Lumberjack'sg and 7 to 0 from Aberdeen, fpurely by the margin of a solo gallop through a mud-splashed fieldl, the Trappers began to click against every team that faced them. Chehalis fell 45 to 6,'and Hoquiam was thoroughly swamped 33 to 6 at the Home- coming Game to avenge last fyear's scoreless-tie. Eugene was bowled over 20 to 0 in a non- league struggle, and Olympia succumbed to a relentless passing attack in a fog drenched field, 14 to 0. With the regulars playing only about ten minutes, Centralia withered 20 to 0, and in the Armistice Day battle at Kelso the Trappers held the strong Highlanders scoreless while tallying 13 points of their own. To climax a brilliant season, Vancouver won the little civil war on Thanksgiving, making pulp of the Camas Papermakers, to the tune of 26 to 6. By playing heads-up football the entire season they amassed a total of 198 points to their opponents 36 for 'a round number gauge average of 20 to 3. Only one team, Jefferson of Portland, scored moretthhn once against them, and five teams were held scoreless. Not because of individual talent but because the Trappers played together and thought together as a team were they able to establish such an outstanding record. Every victory was the result of exceptional team spirit and school backing. Five Trappers were elected to the Southwes Washington Conference All-Star Team composed of the top eleven players in the conference chosen from all the teams. Below is a resume of each. Fred 'Provo-To a brilliant hilglfegicliool football ei!-e6t', Fred was voted the most valuable player in QConference alougegvith unanimoiipiglacement as left half for the second consecutive y running andbpaibing specialistgi' A performed equally well under pressure and the co-holder of the Inspiration cup, Fred was named on the all-time Vancouver team in his junior year. Chuck Burchfleld-The center of the All-star team, Chuck had the physical attri- butes of a good center along with that certain something that makes a player better than good. Besides playing powerful offensive center for the champs, Chuck was a boomer on defense and the other co-hgbder of the Inspiraion cup. 'iQ312,i -lf' if? Joe Willson-One o e rare playersf ' can give all hgjlgcin every play and come back for more, Joe ran d a one of the t ug st, all-out fu ba s ever to don Trapper pads. He was named right half on the all-conference team and voted captain by his team- mates. J oe's educated kicking toe provided a margin of safety for the Trappers all season. Dick Watson-Close to 190 pounds of tackle, Dick was just as fast as he was big. He continuallyuboomed through to break up plays before they were fairly started.
