The only reg'ret is that a new Alki means the end of another school year. To enumerate the pleasure we have had in the work would make a book in it- self. With the learning of a few fundamental rules of printing, a rather vague knowledge of type and copy-reading, the acquiring of inkyfingers, pasty hands, and the wearing of a well-beaten path from Room 108 to the print shop, and back again, we have endeavored to compose an annual of which you will be p1'oud. The entire staff has done its best to bind into this book a pictured record of the school year 1939- 1940. After graduation it is impossible to keep in touch with all the friends you made while in high school. After a few years people whom you saw every day and who were in your classes, are likely to be many miles away from you, either at school or working at jobs. During these years to come, glance through your Alki once in a while and see how much shorter those miles seem to be. You will see yourself and your friends enjoying many activities again, your teachers who worked hard to pull you through. As the years go by and responsibilities gather, you will look through these pages with a smile and sometimes with a sigh. Your 1940 Alki will be a treasured possession then, a passport to a vanished period of your life. May you enjoy it now and cherish it in the future. -Phyllis .lean Covmver, Co-Editor 1940 Alki -lD4 Art Motif The art motif of the 1940 Alki is Mary and Joe Trapper, drawn by Josephine Nickerson. This pair illustrates the buoyant and friendly spirit of Vancouver High School. They are to the students an ideal which every boy and girl strives to reach. As Mary and Joe go swinging through the book, they unfold the various phases of school life. The 1940 Alki is divided into four parts, Faculty, Classes, Activities, and Athletics. These groups are separated by division pages on which are drawings, typifying that sec- tion, and a group of candid pictures, presenting actual scenes of students working and playing. Since the purpose of the Alki is to portray Vancouver High School at work and play, the editors hope that the combination of candid pictures and drawings may aid in presenting the life of the students. Years will come and go, and many things in the world will change. May the spirit of the students continue ever to be as buoyant and friendly as are Joe and Mary Trapper. -Elizczbcfh De Yo1nzg,Co-Editor 1940 Alki I Dr. PauI F. Gaiser Dr. Gaiser, for the past six years superintendent of Vancouver sehoo's, has done much towards further- ing progressive education in the school system of this city. His modtrn ideas have helped to make the high school one of the most outstanding' in the state. This yearls Seniors, the fiftieth graduating' class, feel that they are very fortunate to have been guided by his leadership. We are proud to be a part of a school system which offers such a variety of oppor- tunities to each student. To the leader of this system we are deeply appreciative for all the benefits he has made possible. Phyllis f,l07Z0'I'!'1', Elizabeth De Young, C0-Editors 1940 .-Hifi School Board Mr. Joseph E. By his sympa- thetic, friendly, helpful attitude toward all, he has won for himself the confidence and high regard of the entire student body. His judgment and good advice have proved to be indispensable in the affairs of the student body. In the Student Council he has shown himself to be prac- tical and co-operative under all circumstances. It is through his excellent guidance and leadership that Vancouver High School has reached the high stand- ing it now maintains. +Dmz Fenton, President, Associated Students Student Body Cfiicers President, Donald Fenton First Vice President, Tomo Kosobayashi Second Vice President, Gloria Nuttal Secretary, Shirley Hutchison Sergeant-at-Arms, Harvey Hutton ADMINISTRATION 7 Mr. W. H. Conover The Boys' League has been under the excellent su- pervision of Mr. W. H. Conover for the past six years. His interest and enthusiasm have made possible many of the successes of the boys' organization, such as the annual Smoker, Dads' Night and the annual Boys' League Assembly. All the boys of Vancouver High School look up to Mr. Conover because of his fairness and ever-present sense of fair play. He has untiringly held up to the Boys' League acceptance of responsibility and ideals of hard work. His guidance has been valuable to every boy in high school. -Charles Furno, President Boys' League Boys' League Cfhcers President, Charles Fumo ALKI-1940 First Vice President, Jack Barnes Second Vice President,Woody Cooper Secretary, Robert Hodgson Sergeant-at-Arms, James Irving ADMINISTRATION ALKI-1940 Miss Dorothea von Berg Miss Dorothea von Berg, Dean of Girls, will be long remembered by the girls of Vancouver High School as an understanding friend and competent adviser often consulted during their three years of pleasant associa- tion with her. Under her guidance, the Girls' League has been able to succeed in its numerous activities, such as the Big and Little Sister plan, the Girls' League Mix, the Tolo Dance, selling candy for the loan fund, manag- ing the hospital room, and arranging a regular assem- bly for the girls each month. We feel that because of her helpfulness and assist- ance in all our school life, we have been able to serve the school and to promote a feeling of friendliness and cooperation among the girls. flmogenv Albcrfsmz, P'7'l'.Sidif'I'If, Girls' League Girls' League Officers President, Imogene Albertson Vice President, Letha Gunz Treasurer, Alice Tolcola Recording Secretary, Dorothy Drew Corresponding Secretary, Bette Manary Reporter, Elaine Eberle ADMINISTRATION i HAIL, ALL HAIL TO V.H.S. Mrs. Wetherell The Junior Class has been very successful this year in trying new ideas and following old traditions. Everywhere Juniors are striving their best to make a success of what they are doing. The Juniors are well represented on the Student Council by Priscilla French, in the Boys' League by Bob Hodgson, in the Girls' League by Bette Manary and Dorothy Drew, on the Log Staff by Barbara Custer, Dale Prutzman, Relf Case, Harriet Clow, Kenneth Prager, Loris Lovette, Bob Ritchie, Bill Fell, Bob Kemp, Gustie Dokos, and Bruce Beard, and on the Alki Staff by Maxine Barbeau, Evelyn Fanning, Dorothy Hart, and Donald Shaw. The general theme for the Junior advisory groups was personal development which they studied throughout the year. At the beginning of the year the Juniors gave a Student Body assembly program which was directed by Barbara Kennedy, and which consisted of a one-act mystery play, The Inn of Return, and a spring costume dance put on by eight football boys. Among the new achievements that the Junior Class has made this year was a talent program in a Junior Class meeting in which they discovered new talent of whom any school might be proud. They also attempted to get the Junior Class better acquainted through several social hours after school. These gatherings were for Juniors who wished to dance and get to know more of their own class members. As proof of their school spirit the Class of 1941 won first place in the Homecoming Football Rally They also sponsored a noon dance a noon movie and sold pennants to raise moneyito help finance the Junior-Senior Prom. D. Miller The Sophomore Class has had a successful year under the leadership of their class president, advisory presidents, and Head Adviser. They made their debut in Vancouver High School activities by introducing competitive skits given by the four classes on the football field at the close of the downtown parade the night before the Homecoming Game. Members of the class wrote and performed the Thanksgiving play, A Martianls View of Thanksgiving Day on Earth, which they presented to the Student Body. The Sopho- mores made winter sports the theme of their annual dance. In the spring they conducted dancing classes after school for the purpose of improving their dancing and of getting acquainted. In the second semester at the beginning of the third quarter, the Sophomore Class challenged the Junior Class to a scholastic contest. When the scores were tallied at the end of the grading period, it was discovered that the Sophomores had come through victorious. SOpl'lOlTl0I'C Class Abraliamson, R. General Manager Being divided into two parts, Modern Timesu and the 'tDays of Forty-ninef' this year's Vodvil was acclaimed as one of the best Vancouver High School has ever pre- sented. The curtain was opened on the boys' swing band, seated in a huge bowl, playing several popul-ir selections. Following a clever tap routine and the Jitterbugs, an all girls dance band and the Girls' Sextette appeared under efective lights. Make Room for Rodney, a humorous and well-dramatized one-act play was next. After the impressive ballet dance, a quiz was presented, enabling the audience to test their knowledge. The remaining act took place in the days of forty-nine in a tavern, where there was a floor show of acrobats, unicyclists, singers, a band and a ballet. MARSHALL SHIELDS During the three years I have known Coach Shields he has been interested in the boys who play for him, in their success not only as a team but as individuals. He has been a true friend and an inspiration to everyone. He has developed football and basketball teams which have consistently placed high in Southwest Wash- ington Conference standings. -Jack Barnes MR. CECIL TUTTLE The B Football Squad app1'eciates what their coach, Mr. Tuttle, has done for them. He has trained twenty-five or thirty boys who othcrwise would not have had a chance to make the Varsity. He coached the squad through a full season of eight games against other high schools in the County. Those of us who like to play football are looking forward to having him coach us again. -Everett DeLong MR. WALTER KASTNER Mr. Kastner, a leader of athletics, coached the B Basketball Squad which made a very creditable showing against other high schools in the County. He also in- structed the boxers and wrestlers for the Annual Boys' League Smoker. Mr. Kastner, a new instructor in mathematics on the Vancouver High School Faculty, is noted for his cheer- fulness and friendliness among the students who enjoy working under him. -Eugene French MR. CARL GUSTAFSON We enjoy working with our track coach, Mr. Gustaf- son. All think well of him and find it easy to make friends with him. He is always interested in working with his students and patiently tries to improve their form. We feel that enough credit cannot be given to him, for this year he has produced a track team which is said to be one of the finest that Vancouver High School has ever had. -Herbert Lawrence 5 , 11, - y' ,E 5-P' 1' - rj I f f T if U ll 1 ,Ill I ll I 4. ullllf I ., lflflil, ofilillv Cr! After a somewhat dismal beginning, losing to Jefferson, Grant and Longview, they did make a come-back winning seven and tying one. The Trappers placed just one point behind Kelso and Longview in the Southwest Washington league standing. VANCOUVER 6-LONGVIEW 38 Traveling to Longview for their first conference game, the Trappers were crushed 38-6 by a superior Lumberjack eleven. A pass to Jimmy Johnson and a run by Bob Wilson netted the Trapper tally. VANCOUVER 27-ABERDEEN 0 The fighting Trappers, revenging almost ten years of defeat, skinned the Bobcats of Aberdeen 27-0. Jimmy Johnson scored six points on an end-around, and Fred Provo and Lester White scored the last two touchdowns on line plunges. VANCOUVER 38-CENTRALIA 0 Loosing an avalanche of scores the Red and White team came into its own, October 20, drubbing the Centralia team 38-0. The Tigers were no match for the Trappers, the varsity scoring three touchdowns in the first seven plays. The entire team played well, but showing up especially was Lewis Grant, freshman substitute back, with several nice runs. VANCOUVER 38-OLYMPIA 0 By the now familiar score of 38-0 Vancouver trounced the Olympia High Bears, October 27, on the Trapper grass. Trapper heroes were Joe Willson, Fred Provo, Bob Wilson, Ernest Hoff, Bud Belisle and Paul Gomulkiewicz for their offensive play. Joe Willson averaged 12.2 yards each time he carried the ball, and Lewis Grant averaged 13.3. VANCOUVER 0-HOQUIAM 0 In a game distinguished by the stubborn defensive playing of both teams, the Trap- pers were held to a scoreless tie by Hoquiam. Each team threatened once. Provo almost got away, only to be stopped by Hoquiam's safety. A series of passes was stopped when Burchfield intercepted. ' VANCOUVER 19-KELSO 13 The biggest upset of the season came, when before a record crowd of 5,000 persons, the unpredictable Trappers playedinspired ball to hand Kelso her only defeat of the season. After six minutes of play Joe Willson plowed over for the initial touchdown. Passes to Furno and Provo provided the Trapper's final scores. VANCOUVER 25-CHEHALIS 0 In a night game played in Chehalis the Trap gridders downed a Chehalis Bear- cat team 25-0. Held to a 6-0 score in the first half, the Trappers turned on the heat in the second half to three more touchdowns. Highlight of the game was a beautiful run by Captain Kenny Jacobson. VANCOUVER 19-CAMAS 7 Adding the perfect climax to a successful season Vancouver's football team scored an impressive 19-7 victory over her always dangerous rival Camas. Bud Belisle caught a pass for the first score. Fred Provo plunged through the entire Camas team in a spec- tacular 85-yard run to goal. Joe Willson made the third score. ALKI-1940 88 ATHLETICS E BASKETBALL The 1939-40 Basketball Squad won third place in the Southwest Washington Con- ference. This season five boys played the greater part of every game: Charles Stecher, Captain, Frank Mohns, Inspiration Man, Jack Morris, Joe Willson, and Fred Provo. Others who won their letters on the squad were Mel Broberg, Verman Mayes, Bob Burns, and Elmer White. The team set their highest scoring pace when they beat Camas 53-30 in their last game.
