ALK1, however, looks not back, but forward, forward to the success of our graduates, forward to greater development of our school, progress of our city, advancement of our nation. -Margaret Bangs, Editor won ART MOTIF The city of Vancouver has at its service all modes of transportation, air, highway, rail, and water, and has imm.ediate promise of greater development in the future. Transportation typifies the spirit of pro- gress which is dominant in our city and school. There- fore transportation has been chosen the art theme of the annual, suggesting illustrations simple in design and modern in composition. -Norbert Sorger, A'rtist THE OLD Like an old friend, the sight of the 'warm red brick and thick green iw of Vancouver High School's east front will always kindle a warm glow in our hearts. The sentimental, the traditional spirit of our school is truly represented here. M. B. THE NEW Tall, graceful pillars harmonize with curving steps and graduated arcs to compose a symphony in symmetry, our new north Font entrance. To perfect architecture is added a note of sanctity,-a tree ,s first tiny green leaves of spring- M. B. .- tt l DR. PAUL F, GAISER Dr. Paul F. Gaiser, three years principal of Van- couver High School, two years superintendent of Van- couver Public Schools, has proved himself a pro- gressive leader, a man of whom Vancouver may be proud. He has made the superintendenfs position one which is equally concerned with all city schools and with all students. -Margaret Bangs, Editor i SCHOOL BOARD Mr. Harry Craig, President Mr. L. M. Burnett Mr. Floyd Ratchford Mr. Joseph Hall Dr. A. P. Ryan Mr. Lloyd Matson, Secretary MR. HENRY DEYOUNG Mr. DeYoung, through his friendliness and will- ingness at all times to cooperate with the students, has proved himself to be an understanding and cap- able executive of Vancouver H.gh School. It is Mr. DeYoung's ambition and ours to make Vancouver High School the best in the West. -Charles Pillsbury, President Associated Students of Vancouver High School MR. W. H. CONOVER Mr. W. H. Conover, Vice-Principal, general mana- ger of all student finances, and Boys' League adviser, has proved himself a very efficient administrator. Through his friendly, enthusiastic interest in school affairs, he has earned the whole-hearted regard of every student associated with him. Delbert Jackson, Business Manager Associated Students MISS VON BERG Miss von Berg, our Dean of Girls, is the ideal of all students. VERSES Vancouver High School is proud of the three people who placed poems in West Winds, an anthology of high school poetry compiled by the Puget Sound Council of English Teachers. They have proved that the subject matter of poetry is round about us awaiting only the alert eye, the sensitive feeling. To these potential poets, all success: Ernest Hull, Vivian Burr, Saxon Miller.-Mrs. H. J. Powers. -Saxon Miller, Advisory Groups Editor LIGHT You call me the dancer on water at sunset, The glory of the moong I stagger down slippery streets when it rains, I slowly mount the shiny brass flag-pak of the church When the sun strikes it at the right angle. But I am not a romantic wave-dancer, Nor moon-glory, I am an undulation in a subtle, elastic medium, No more. -Ernest Hull WHILE LOOKING AT TREES I gaze out the window at the trees, With my head cradled on my hands. I visualize scenes of long ago, Events where these trees were present, Standing so proudly, vet so still. As the wind rujles the boughs together, It seems to me they are trying to speak. So-Hly, and yet so distinctly I hear them, In my mind 's eye I see braves, Indian maidens, great smoke signals Floating across the sky. These trees have seen the pageant Of a nation, and yet they stand fearlessly, Staunchly keeping their secrets To themselves. -Vivian 'Burr SNOW Y CHRISTMAS White twilight and lazy blue smoke, 'Brittle fingers like icicle-spikesg Sch pat-pat of snow-crystalsg Holly wreaths and red berries: Christmas. -Saxon Miller Soaring higher above the common masses, The active soul finds interests out of classes, 'Builds within himsehr a wider scope of seeing 'By being into things instead of merely being. It is a privilege and an inspiration to play under his coaching. -Lewis Luehrs, Inspiration Man FOOTBALL IN SPIRATION MAN Lewis Luehrs was always able to rise to meet the situation. Lewis is an asset to any group. His deter- mination and intelligence made him an ideal student of the game. -Coach Shields FOOTBALL SEASON-1935 The outstanding problem which faced Coach Shields at the start of the season was the. lack. of weight and experience. With five lettermen as a nucleus he built up a team which finished well up in the conference standing and at the end of the season handed Hoquiam their first defeat in two years. Twenty-two men earned their major letters during the 1935 football season. Choice of each letterman was based on the fight and determination which the player had showed and the number of minutes and quarters which he had played. Coach Shields believes that this group of lettermen have determination and 'spirit to an unusual degree. Bob McMullen, manager, knew the needs of the players and took care of the equipment, having played enough himself to have a good idea of the game. Not pictured: Jack Sullivan.
