returned for his second term then our present-day principal, Brother M.A. Maher followed him. We attribute the long-awaited new Brothers ' Residence and track to him. We sincerely wish to express our thanks and gratitude to all these men before and men to come. For without their helpful guidance V.C. would not be the remarkable institution it was, is, or will be. 1. On the occasion of the fortieth anniversary five past principals gathered to pose with a painting of their predecessor, Br. M.J. Lannon. 2. Br. M.J. Lannon was principal for V.C. 10 “Master, teach us to pray . . From the arrival in Vancouver in 1922 of four Christian Brothers of Ireland, headed by Brother Michael J. Lannon to the present-day renovation accomplishments lead by Brother Michal A. Maher, Vancouver College has been blessed with responsible principals dedicated to the development of men. Brother Lannon, principal for the first eleven years of College developed a concern for the spiritual, the academic, the cultural and the athletic which has characterized the school ever since. He personally produced the Bard’s plays for audiences at the old Orpheum Theatre. In 1928 Brother P.B Doyle succeeded Brother Lannon as principal, but Brother Lannon was back from 1930 to 1933. Brother C.C. Sterling had the task of being principal during the majority of the thirties, then turned over the school to his successor Brother E.B. Walsh, in 1939. Brother Walsh served V.C. for 28 years as an administrator and teacher. He began collecting funds for a gymnasium, a facility that had been dreamed of since V.C. ' s conception. Br. M.D. Cunningham succeeded him. During his term, in 1946, the top floors of Mc- Cormack Hall and the original wing caught on fire and was thus rebuilt. College continued to grow during the prin- cipalship of Brother W.C. Penny (1948-1954) as the long-delayed gymnasium was built along with tennis courts in front. Brother J.C. Bates became principal in 1954. With the aid of Henry J. Jackin, the east wing of the school, Mackin Hall was built. A black top play area and drain tiles beneath the College field also upgraded the institution. Brother F.R. Finch (1960-1966) added extra locker and shower facilities above the en- trance of the gym and Nichol Hall was opened in 1964. Brother J.B. Clarkson served as principal from 1966 through till 1968 and Brother H.L. Bucher succeeded him. Brother Bucher carried out extensive interior renovations including a resource centre for the elementary and an expanded library for secondary students. Brother J.C. Bates

Br. M.A. Maher, C.F.C., M.A. Br. Maher has spent a total of 15 years at V.C., the last five of which he was the school ' s principal. This year Br. Maher took the time out of his hectic schedule to teach Religion to home room 123 and French to Grade 10. Dear Friends: This Diamond Jubilee book is an attempt to reflect the growing and thriving spirit of Vancouver College. It is a spirit that dips gently into the past to recall our roots and it is a spirit that glows with expectation for the future. Most of all it is a spirit which fuels our present to continue the insistence on Catholic moral and academic education. Our greatest ally in our quest has been and always will be the parents of the boys who pass through our halls. We live in times that seem to scorn the traditional appreciation for the strength of the family. And the times seem to laugh mockingly at us for daring to stand for love and honour among men. But when the excitement and enthusiasm of youth begins to find its perspective in life, the vision of our youth will be shaped by the lessons of love and honour learned in the family and nurtured in the school. We are proud of our part in articulating this vision in an educational context and we are proud of the confidence the parents have seen fit to extend to us over the years. To all who have been a part of our past we voice a hearty thank you and to you who will join in our future we voice a hearty welcome. Sincerely, Michael A. Maher, C.F.C., M.A. Principal Mr. J. Kavalec, B.A., B.Pe., M.Ed. This year is number fifteen for Mr. Kavalec. When not acting as the school ' s vice-principal, Mr. Kavalec takes the time out to teach his specialty, Biology, to the Grade 11 and 12’s, as well as General Science to Grade 10. Mr. M. Kim, B.Ed. During Mr. Kim ' s fourteenth year at V.C., he supervised the elementary school, and took the time to teach Grade 71.
