The growth of Vancouver College during the last sixty years has been remarkable; 1980-81 has probably been the most significant. The College ' s face is constantly changing: a new track and a Brother ' s House being the most important changes this year. College is moving with the times, because since the foundation of the Brothers in 1802 their aim has been to provide a Catholic Education in the best possible atmosphere. The Brothers are not able to do this work without the support of Old Boys, Parents and Friends and to them we are grateful; as St. Paul stresses ' ' the community of Christian love is one with the Lord. So it has been since Brother Lannon and his fellow Brothers oc- cupied this campus in 1925, and it continues today. Progression: the source of patient growth and maturity. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS P. 6 Faculty P. 20 Graduates P. 54 High School P. 92 Elementary P.110 Activities P.120 Fine Arts P.136 Special Events P.150 Sports P.184 Friends FACULTY Principal ' s Message Br Maher B A. Dear Students, I am most happy to provide a Principal ' s message to the COLLEGIAN. The traditional high quality of this publication remains a vital source for the history of the school and its public relations The end of this current school year brings us to the ripe old age of fifty-nine. And the 1981-82 school year will usher us into our Diamond Jubilee. Our preparations for this celebration are extensive and far-reaching Our fund drive and building program will add some badly needed facilities and change the face of the present campus. And if we do in fact change the College, it will be because the heart remains strong and growing. It will be because we have all found a place within that heart and we have grown to value its contribution to our lives. The history of the College is one of sacrifice and mutually shared endeavour and accomplishment. We value because we sacrifice to contribute. In a very real sense, the Brothers, the lay staff, the students, and their families, have in the College an opportunity for sacrificial living for one another that touches at the very core of our Christian and Catholic lives. If we do not sacrifice we do not love and we cannot call ourselves Christian. Our jubilee will be a celebration of that history. More than a celebration, I trust that it will become a renewal of our hearts to strengthen our spirit of family both at home and at the school. I trust that both the jubilee and the history that produced the jubilee will serve to affirm in us time and time again that our sacrifice for one another leaves us a treasure endured far beyond brick and mortar Fondest wishes to the grads of 1981 ! 8 Sincerely yours, Br. The class was certainly open to accepting this challenge and they realized from the very beginning that it was not going to be an easy task Using the daily reading of the Scriptures as their foundation they began Their concern for their little brothers in the primary school and their personal contributions to the missions were the areas which first showed the affects of accepting this challenge. As the year progressed they continued to become more and more concerned for one another With the school year coming to a close the class realizes that they have come a long way in their academics, their athletics but especially in becoming a true Christian community 1 Brother Lawlor do you want to hear my Uruguayan flamingo mating call? ] n ' ■w w . 1 i ™ fry Front Row: Mark Redfern, Andrew Whalen, Kel Parry, Mark Brown, Ber- nard Hensel, Alex Ip, Frank Clarke, Darryl Malby, Aaron Ban R|kstra, David Bennett, Ryan McCourt, Dean Doolan Second Row: Mark Bragagnolo, Kerry Lucas, Edward Wood, Greg Lavoilette, Stephen Danielsen, Mark Neilsen, Bruce Carpenter, Kevin Drager, Rob McSweeney, Paul Wilson, William Bailey, David Yong, Jonty McNair, Br Lawlor Third Row lames Horvath, Christopher Short, Michael Stradiotti, Geff Furmedge, Jason Dumaresq, John Kilpatrick, Harvey Hill, Franco Felicella, Michael Guthrie, Kris Kucera Absentees: Adrian Lakowski 107 1. Tradition - the tradition of high quality in entertainment established over the last eleven years of V.C.-L.F.A. musicals continued this year as FIDDLER ON THE ROOF came to life. This perennial favourite tells the story of the simple dairyman Tevye, played by Mike Stack, and his wife Golde, Kathleen Gilligan, and their troubles and grievances when their three eldest daughters find husbands in the midst of political turmoil in Russia. In spite of the efforts of the matchmaker Yente, Bridget Kenny, to have the eldest daughter Tzeitel, Nancy Clarke, marry the butcher Lazar Wolfe, Sam Vovnik, Tzeitel herself selects the tailor Motel, Hernando Cortez Jr. Tevye’s second daughter Hodel, Dolly Lakowski, strikes up a romance with the radical student Perchik, Colin Carney, while Chava, Jennifer Gerard, creates a family crisis by choosing the Russian Fyedka, Scott Howard. All together a cast of forty-three students - the biggest cast in several years - and a supporting pit orchestra of about ten voices worked since January. Once again Grace Macdonald worked her theatrical magic with the cast, and Anatevka came to life. The musical direction this year was handled by Mr. David Suomi, himself a member of the pit orches tra for five of the last six V.C.-L.F.A. musicals. Overseeing the production were Brother Warren, newly arrived this year at V.C. and Mr. Stan Kazun, who looked after the music for the last three years. Stage crew, props people and members of the orchestra greatly added their efforts to the work done. The performances were superb, demonstrating the perserverance and dedication involved. The “Tradition” of the musical throughout the years has been an event in the school calendar which the entire student body, faculty and parents note as one of the most important professional activity and definitely look forward to. The Collegian regrets we could not take pictures of the actual performances due to early deadline for layouts. 1 L CHAIM. To Life! We had a new moderator with no yearbook ex- perience, a fledgling new editor and assistant editor, a number of staff members not totally committed to their task and an ad campaign that seem to indicate a lack of interest and support. In late October a state of emergency was declared and seeking the advice and experience of Mr Peter O ' Loughlin a new plan was formulated and guidlines set down Brother Lawlor, Paul Catto and Hernando Cortez realized that a certain amount of pruning had to be done in regard to the staff and within a few weeks the staff went from thirty-five members to twenty. Even at one point Mr O ' Loughlin was wondering if he would be served with his notice. However, such a thought was far from our minds because we all realized how valuable a person he was to the success of this yearbook. The Yearbook is an activity that is unique Tn regard to most activities because it begins in September and does not end until the last day of school in June and therefore like many things in life what is needed more than anything else is perseverance. Paul Catto was an editor who possessed the virtues of persistance, patience but most important per- severance. As a result the Collegian slowly began to arise from the ashes of near disaster Now as we near the end of the year, the light at the end of the tunnel seems that much brighter and we the members of the staff can certainly look back over the year and say it was a difficult one but the difficulties that we did en- counter were met head on and instead of failure personal growth and enrichment ensued For the Collegian staff of 1980-81, it was truly a year of personal enrichment and we hope that the 1981-82 staff has a better beginning but an equally if not more rewarding experience in the end 1 I ' m the only nut crazy enough to take my own picture laments Michael Hir- schprung. 2. LTD ■ri 142 The ninth annual Vancouver College Student Leadership Conference was held this year on November 21st and 22nd. This is an exciting event, presented by the students and graduates of V.C. and L F A. This year ' s conference attracted more than 65 participants from over 20 different schools in the Lower Mainland and the rest of B.C. Also taking part in the conference were a number of faculty members and gophers, without whom the conference would have failed Br Nolan moderated the conference, which was co-ordinated by V.C. grad Mark Hagemoen. The team was coached by Mr Spagnuolo and his assistants: Joe MacKinnon, Brian Konar, Jim Kelly and Cary Sanvido. This year under the coaching of Mr. G. the team went through the entire season undefeated Although this ac- complishment went almost entirely unnoticed the members of the team feel very confident and look forward to the year when they can accomplish that important sports feat for Vancouver College. 1 Bill Bailey ' s interpretation of Swan Lake.
