Brother Estrada - Ti uenty-fiue years of seruice On November 24, the Brothers at Vancouver College observed Brother A.R. Estrada ' s silver jubilee. A native of Whittier, California, Brother Estrada entered the Christian Brothers at West Park, New York, on July 6, I 954. After obtaining his B.A. in Modern Languages at Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, he was first assigned to Vancouver College in I 957. He remained here for only two years for in I 959 he was posted at O’Dea High School in Seattle. After making his Final Profession in 1961 he was transferred to St. Mary’s Academy where he was to remain until 1972. For the next school year he was stationed at Chaminade College School in Toronto, then he returned to V.C. for a second time in 1973. However, he remained at College just one school year for in July, 1974, he was assigned to Colegio Nuestra, Senora del Pilar in Arequipa, Peru, where he remained for the next five years. He returned to Canada in January of 1979 and was again posted at Chaminade College in Toronto for the remainder of the school year. Brother Estrada returned to Vancouver College in September of 1979. Brother Lawerence Austin Angel Those tuho instr uct many unto justice shall shine as stars for all eternity.” Monsignor Nichol a long time friend of the Brothers and V.C. pronounced a eulogy upon the occasion of Brother Angel’s death. How appropriate does the above quotation from Sacred Scripture become when applied to the life of Brother Lawrence Austin Angel who, in the early morning hours of Monday, March I Oth., was called by His Divine Master to his eternal home. Brother Angel spent thirty-six years as a member of the Congregation of Christian Brothers, carrying on the work begun by Brother Edmund Ignatius Rice, of instructing youth in the eternal truths. For ten years of his life as a Religious teacher, Brother Angel gave faithful and devoted service to the Vancouver College Community. In addition to being an instructor in Religious Knowledge and the eternal truths, Brother Angel was a competent teacher of English, Latin, and French. His many expupils will recall his warm personality and keen wit both as a teacher in the classroom and as a friend in the casual conversations which take place between student and teacher after classes. Brother Angel was bom in St. John ' s, Newfoundland fifty-nine years ago. After his initial training as a Christian Brother and a teacher. He began his first teaching assignment in 1946 at St. Louis College, Victoria. In addition to his ten years of service at the College, Brother spent seven more years instructing students in B.C. - three years in Victoria, and four years at St. Thomas More High School, Burnaby. The remaining years of his teaching career were spent in schools conducted by the Christian Brothers in Los Angeles, U.S.A., and in St. John’s Newfoundland. The Collegian staff feel certain they are expressing the sentiments of the entire College community when we offer our sincere condolences to his surviving sister and three brothers and other relatives. We also offer our sympathy to his religious family. The Christian Brothers. To us, he was an outstanding example of what it means to be a member of the Order of Christian Brothers. We are thankful to the Almighty and to the Congregation of Christian Brothers for the honour and pleasure given to us by allowing Brother Angel to share his life with us. The lives of his expupils have been enriched in a special way for they are now more certain of their own vocation in the community of Christians. The Mass of Resurrection at the funeral service was celebrated in Holy Rosary Cathedral on Thursday, March I 3th. His Grace, Archbishop James F. Carnery, D.D. was the chief celebrant. Co-celebrants were His Excellency, Bishop L. Sabatini, Father D. Mulvihill, President of St. Mark ' s College, Father James Whelihan, chaplain to the Brothers at the College, and Father William Ashley, Assistant at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish. Rt. Rev. T.M. Nichol, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish gave the homily. In attendance at the Mass were Br. Angel’s sister and a number of his nephews and nieces. All of the Brothers from the Vancouver College and St. Thomas More communities were present at the Mass as well as visiting Brothers from Toronto, Seattle, and Chicago. Others in attendance included students from both Vancouver College and St. Thomas More, a large number of his expupils, parents of the students and friends. 4

October 26th. was International Year of the Child Day for the Elementary School students. Emphasis was placed on the ethnic makeup of our school community, and the fact that peaceful coexistance is feasible even in the diversity of a metropolitan gathering. The Day was marked by a talk on the U.N. guarantee of safe water for all people by 1990, presented by guest speaker Dorothy Mckinnon, past President of UNICEFF Canada. I . The day began, appropriately, with a group prayer. 2. Polish-flag waving Chris Lopianowski discusses the price of oil with Sheik William Hamlin. 3. Some of the best-dressed member of grade 72 assemble for a group shot. 4. Jose Ramirez entertains the whole elementary school with Mexican Rancheras. 5. Mrs. Sendall pirouettes in front of the camera. 6. Br. Conti’s class demonstrates its willingness to join the fun. 6
