t TOTUS TUUS Dear Students, I am appreciative of your thoughtful sentiments and prayerful support. I am pleased to know that the teaching staff of your high school has chosen “Justice and Peace” as the theme for the school year. I assure you of my prayers and cordially impart to you and all those associated with you in your message, my Apostolic Blessing. Your brother in Christ Joannes Paulus P.P. II. ... Chirst is our Justice and our Peace, and all our works of justice and peace draw from this source. We must resolutely commit ourselves to the service of individuals and of people - for Christ urges us to do so • . . . scripture tells us that Lazarus found consolation, but that the rich man found torment. Was the rich man condemned because he had riches, because he abounded in earthly possessions? . . . The rich man was condemned because he did not pay attention to the other man. Because he failed to take notice of Lazarus. Nowhere does Christ condemn the mere possession of earthly goods; he pronounces very harsh words against those who use their possessions in a selfish way, without paying attention to the needs of others. From the speech of Pope John Paul II October 2, Yankee Stadium. 3
