The Grade One class serves a double purpose around the school. They fulfill their duties as young students and make the rest of the student body feel very sophisticated. In their initial year of schooling, they begin to master the written word (some 400 in their five readers), study mathematical combinations up to 18 and acquire the fine art of printing. Religiously, their most important training takes place. Under the watchful eye of Brother O’Grady, they prepare themselves for Confession, Confirmation and First Communion. Just as in the secular subjects, the all-important foundation is made. And it is while listening to their earnest prayers that our imagined sophistication vanishes. Here, among Christ’s little ones, we may find a sobering object lesson. m
