VANCOUVER, B. C Our hands are most expressive of our actions. It is with them that we pray, study, work and play. The Scriptures are filled with references to the work of God and man’s hands. Truly, “All living things that breathe, all the spirits of all mankind lie in the hollow of God’s Hand”. The hands of God “fashioned the heav- ens, His fingers measured the span of the earth”. And at every moment God is “ready to open His hands and fill with blessing all that fives”. On our part, we use our hands as instruments of our sanctifica- tion. We lift our hands in prayer, soil them in labour and utilize them at play. It is because we five in God’s hands and strive for eternal fife with our hands that we have chosen hands to express our varied activities at school. We sincerely hope that the inter- ests of God and the school have been served in the book you now hold in your hands. D E D CATION In this, her coronation YEAR, WE RENEW OUR PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO OUR NEWLY CROWNED QUEEN. WE PRAY THAT GOD WILL GRANT TO HER THE GRACE OF A LONG AND PROS- PEROUS REIGN. DURING THESE TROUBLED TIMES, THE “RADIANT QUEEN”— AS HER SUBJECTS WOULD HAVE IT— MAY WELL SERVE AS A SHINING EXAMPLE TO US ALL. Her Majesty, then Princess Elizabeth, enters the Canadian Institute for the Blind ac- companied by Mayor Fred Hume. The Queen, accompanied by Prince Philip and local digni- taries, arrives at the Hotel Vancouver. Pictures on these two pages, courtesey of Vancouver Sun. Painting of Her Majesty by Rev. Br. E. 13. Father Reiter Truly, Into God ' s hands has the Christian Brother com- mended his spirit . Well might they pray with the Psalmist: Thou art my Lord, my fate is in thy hand. The Brother, on his part, folds his hands each morning at prayer, grasps the books, chalk, eraser and the many other instruments for imparting knowledge; and with his hands he shows us how to grip a ball or bat. At long last, the diploma, a token of four years of work — labour well expended, preparing ourselves for the future. The Principal ' s firm hand- clasp fills us with assurance, and hope, coupled with a certain reluctance. Our hands have been trained, now. We pray that we will use them to their best advantage. And, as we wave farewell, our hearts are filled with confidence; for, whatever the future may bring, we shall always be secure in God ' s loving hand ... PHILIP B. UNSWORTH, Moderator ’Tis now 11:30 p.m. And we must compose some- tiling about ourselves. It’s not an easy task to write about oneselves, without sounding a bit conceited. And yet, we cannot tell you about the yearbook without men- tioning what was done. All agreed on one point — ’Twas a tough job. Pictures, copy, paste-ups, layouts — these were words we often screamed at one another. And there’s a second consideration — we enjoyed every min- ute. There has been a genuine sense of accomplishment in producing a book for you as well as ourselves. We boast a bit because we have worked on something that will bring back memories in years to come. The Annual will have its faults. We beg your charity and yet feel confident because we have done our best. We. pray that the interests of God and the school have been served in this Annual. ’Ti s now 12:05 a.m. Thanks . . . tcwui To those who thought that last year’s “Macbeth” was the climax of V.C.’s Dramatic accomplishments, Mr. Frank Lambrett- Smith and his youthful associates had a different answer. This year, they soared to new heights. At Christmas, in conjunction with the Glee Club and Band, they presented Dicken’s classic “Christmas Carol”. It was one hour of unsurpassed beauty that left the audience craving for more. On S.t. Patrick’s Eve, their interpretation of the Comedy Scene of “Midsummer-Nights Dream” was something the “Immortal Bard” himself would have found refreshing. Unfortunately, their annual presentation, “Rich- ard III”, was not in time for the “Collegian” deadline, but re- hearsal hearings testified that it has all the marks of another classic. Thanks to Mr. Smith’s ceaseless efforts and the enthusi- asm of over 40 thesbians, Drama now holds an honoured position in V.C. Activities. Scrooge and Co. talk business and dream dreams in “The Christmas Carol ”, while the wrestlers frolic in “Midsummer-Nights Dream’’. Insert: Mr. F. Lambrett- Smith. MR. College’s Glee Club needs no introduction. ’Tis the talk of the town. For the past six years, the Irish vocal- ists’ popularity has been growing. Now, with the aplomb of professionals, they have tackled four-part pieces that are truly professional. This year, after two successful concerts at school, they travelled to the An- nual Music Festival. Their rendition of “Kyri e Elei- son” and “O Bone Jesu” brought high praise from the adjudicators and a first place certificate. Many pointers were gained, also — pointers that should produce a near perfection group next year. PHILIP WATTS, Director BR. The Band has now come into its own, and there’s much more to come. Over 40 anxious pupils were enrolled this year. Under Mr. Olsen’s expert guidance, the Band progressed steadily throughout the year. Each concert found them opening the pro- gram with lively marches, ballads and Irish Aires. Overheard at one concert — from a man who knew his notes: “That band has balance, skill and power’’. When no coach could be found, two ex-College greats, Cal Murphy and Leo Sweeney, of- fered their services; a task which meant great sacrifices to themselves. Practice ses- sions could not begin until late afternoon. The Irish were small and inexperienced compared with the opposition. There was the schedule problem and the fact that we had no home field. The boys worked hard, fought harder; but the odds were stacked much too high. We dropped every game in the meager schedule. But, the Irish kept at it because they wanted to keep Football alive at College. Only the skeptics recalled the winning days of yore. Most were happy to witness the continuance of the game despite the “lean years”. Next year should see the fruition of this seemingly fruitless fighting. We thank the boys who kept the sport alive. It was an ordinary season; the Irish won some big ones, lost others. The close of the Provincial Tournament saw them in a respectable fifth posi- tion. College’s new coach, Bill O’Brien, instilled fight into his cagers that had rival coaches more than envious. They lost to bigger and better teams but were never outfought. It was a long season — over 30 contests — and the won-loss record was a good one. Starlets Mulhem, McKenzie, Brandolini, Llort, Beaudin, O’Fallon and Hoar kept the point average at a respectable 40 per fracas. We enjoyed bigger and better crowds — -reminiscent of the Tournament winning years of ’47 and ’49. And that’s the story. Three days each week and every Thursday night, many anxious Grammarians gathered to learn the art of “rubberizing” their muscles. Br. Clarkson and a qualified group of Pro-Rec Instruc- tors combined their talents to give the boys a well - rounded exercise program. The success of their labours was evidenced by the fine ' display on St. Patrick’s Eve and those produced during the intermissions of the Basketball games: iuuulill Boyd is clowning again! Roger Cotter flips Like the pyramids of Egypt! evtcw In the pictures that follow, we observe much of the finished labour of our hands. The Concerts, Plays, Bazaars and general candid studies reveal the utility of the hands God has given us. Without their aid many things cease; our voices lose their flavour; our functions their interest, and our general gather- ings their very life. We thank God for our hands and pray that when our life must pass in review, we will have used our hands to their best advantage and to His greater honour and glory. 1952 September 1952 Mrs. “L” — “one 30 center ” Each month — First Friday Mass Lee — he’s indispensible He’s interested in isotopes! Well, we have much the same story to tell. Not so long ago ... all too short ago . . people became ostriches whenever the word cancer was heard. And this attitude cost thousands of lives every year . . . needlessly. Now doctors, nurses, teachers, and ordinary people all insist — tell people this: 94% of cancer of the lip, 80% of cancer of the mouth or cheek, 95% of cancer of the skin is curable when treated in time. And the same story is true for other cancer areas. These are high percentages — and there ' s a lot of hope. And we feel that because you and your friends — an enlightened generation — keep your heads up straight, and don ' t hide them in fear, you have helped and when you get older will continue to help save thousands of lives in man’s fight against cancer. If you would like pamphlets or films on cancer we would be pleased to send them out to you. The B. C. Division of the Canadian Cancer Society 686 WEST 10th AVE. VANCOUVER, B. C. ' s Industries British Columbia’s industrial expansion — upon which our future prosperity depends so much — rests greatly upon the available supplies of electricity. The B.C. Electric’s continuing program of hydro-electric power development provides ample electricity for existing and potential industries in the areas served by the company. This year’s program, for instance, will involve the expenditure of over 24 million dollars on additions and improvements to the B.C. Electric’s power generating and distributing facilities. This expenditure — most of it directly in British Columbia — itself creates millions of man-hours of work. B. C.
