'Q Freshmen Football The 1978 VW Freshmen Football Team posted a 1-4- 1 record after defeating Ottawa in their lst game. Then problems beset the team, and they lost their next 4 games: a total of only 8 points were sacrificed during these losses. ln the final game against Definace, they suffered their greatest defeat. Despite the record, the young Cougars gained valuable experiences, proper Sites for a touchdown! attitudes, and a deeper insight of football as a sport. .W Q X ,. X. sm., 'FM' ,' Ma E.

Something unique took place on VW's football field in 19785 something unique came alive. The overall record of 4-6, however, was no indication of the exciting season, the courage, the morale, and the teamwork demonstrated by the Cougars. The team brought a new offensive look to Eggeress Stadium, a quick hitting game punctuated with passing which kept the Cougars in 9 of the 10 games until the final gun. A hard-hitting, stingy defense protected Van Wert turf. Despite inexperience and a plague of injuries, its perserverence complimented the offense. The attitude and spirit of the Cougars showed marked improvement, and much of the credit must be given to the senior leadership and the elected captains Bill Clifton, Joe Edinger, and Mike Proffitt. lt would be remiss not to mention the special units who usually gave the Cougars good field position. These units were led by punter, Steve Ridenour and deep back, Dick Methot. Those receiving special awards were: Clifton, MVP, Edinger, blocking and Cougar Pride, Mike Keith, tacklerg Dave Uncapher, Most Improved, and Dan Finkhousen, Coaches Award. Post season also saw Denny Dull and Mike Keith selected to 2nd team All League: Clifton, Edinger, and Scott Hartge received Honorable Mention.

Exciting, Enthusiastic, Energetic, Vivacious, Determined: these adjectives described the 1978 edition of Cougar Volleyball. The Varsity, led by the experienced hands and minds of 6 seniors, provided thrills for all involved with a very respectable 12-4 record, the best in Cougar Volleyball history. Wins came at the hands of many challenging teams, losses were given up to St. Johns, Celina, St. Marys, and Lima Bath in tournament play. Those seniors leading the way were Captain Laura Packer, selected lst Team All League and recipient of the Cougar awards for most serves and most receptions, Chreyl Ridenour, a 1st Team All League selection and the Cougars leading setter, and Julie Nieman, receiving League Honorable Mention and the Cougars' blocker award. Rounding out the seniors were hitters Polly Fleming, Peg Rickner, and Lynn Thomas, each selected to the Honorable Mention Team. Fleming was the Cougars leading hitter, Rickner had the most-3rd hits, and Thomas the most dlnks and service aces. Backing up these people were Linda Markward and Lori Hoffman, two outstanding substitutes. Cecilia Drevas, a senior exchange student, filled out the roster.
