If studied, it would appear that many of these steps occur during the high school years, for it is a time of forming opinions, establishing beliefs, and plan- ning for the future. It is often necessary to take a few steps backwards to make a little progress in the right direction, but we all must experience this. So the 1978-79 school year has indeed been a step, a step in time. i-'- '.im.. ssesf W lf 3 N....,,Z .f' ae.-Q K... - f. X' rt Y g.. , i Z s 5 Q K I 'E 1 . ,.... . i...,...,.. ...,..,.,., . Never was there a teacher more supportive of a school and its activities, or one more dedicated to the students. Academically, she illuminated the spheres of Latin and English IV, culturally she shared her experiences with us, thereby open- ing the doors of travel, investigation, and the development of self respect. lt is with grati- tude, admiration, and respect that we say goodbye to her and wish her the best of luck in the future. Something unique took place on VW's football field in 19785 something unique came alive. The overall record of 4-6, however, was no indication of the exciting season, the courage, the morale, and the teamwork demonstrated by the Cougars. The team brought a new offensive look to Eggeress Stadium, a quick hitting game punctuated with passing which kept the Cougars in 9 of the 10 games until the final gun. A hard-hitting, stingy defense protected Van Wert turf. Despite inexperience and a plague of injuries, its perserverence complimented the offense. The attitude and spirit of the Cougars showed marked improvement, and much of the credit must be given to the senior leadership and the elected captains Bill Clifton, Joe Edinger, and Mike Proffitt. lt would be remiss not to mention the special units who usually gave the Cougars good field position. These units were led by punter, Steve Ridenour and deep back, Dick Methot. Those receiving special awards were: Clifton, MVP, Edinger, blocking and Cougar Pride, Mike Keith, tacklerg Dave Uncapher, Most Improved, and Dan Finkhousen, Coaches Award. Post season also saw Denny Dull and Mike Keith selected to 2nd team All League: Clifton, Edinger, and Scott Hartge received Honorable Mention. lm 1 sis ' - CFWHS ., , , , 5 ww- , .4 . gamma A Y A 5 Q V1 nw f' 'FUGH' WM .4 f cu-me C' ' .E 'warg am if i as L 1 mg L ,tx 4., 1,2 SN VH. Then problems beset the team, and they lost their next 4 games: a total of only 8 points were sacrificed during these losses. ln the final game against Definace, they suffered their greatest defeat. Despite the record, the young Cougars gained valuable experiences, proper Sites for a touchdown! attitudes, and a deeper insight of football as a sport. .W Q X ,. X. sm., 'FM' ,' Ma E. Exciting, Enthusiastic, Energetic, Vivacious, Determined: these adjectives described the 1978 edition of Cougar Volleyball. The Varsity, led by the experienced hands and minds of 6 seniors, provided thrills for all involved with a very respectable 12-4 record, the best in Cougar Volleyball history. Wins came at the hands of many challenging teams, losses were given up to St. Johns, Celina, St. Marys, and Lima Bath in tournament play. Those seniors leading the way were Captain Laura Packer, selected lst Team All League and recipient of the Cougar awards for most serves and most receptions, Chreyl Ridenour, a 1st Team All League selection and the Cougars leading setter, and Julie Nieman, receiving League Honorable Mention and the Cougars' blocker award. Rounding out the seniors were hitters Polly Fleming, Peg Rickner, and Lynn Thomas, each selected to the Honorable Mention Team. Fleming was the Cougars leading hitter, Rickner had the most-3rd hits, and Thomas the most dlnks and service aces. Backing up these people were Linda Markward and Lori Hoffman, two outstanding substitutes. Cecilia Drevas, a senior exchange student, filled out the roster. Peg slaps one back. The Cougar Junior Varsity record- ed their best season to date and the first winning season of 9 wins and 6 losses. These girls were capably led by co-captains Julie Hill and Marilyn Shrum. In preparation for next year's varsity team, these eight la- dies provided the fans with thrills and excitement throughout the sea- son. 7 4 ,ff ,wt .5191 T ' . g,.V,: i b . Highlighting the season was a new school record set at the Delphos Country Club, breaking the 146 score established by the 1976 team. Van Wert placed 1st in the Second Annual Dephos Invitational Tournament with an 18 hole score of 320, and recorded another 1st place finish in the Sectional Tournament at the Auglaize Golf Club in Defiance, with a score of 326. Unfortunately, the Cougars bowed out of tournament play by placing 7th in District Competition. Outstanding individual efforts were recorded by Dave Conn and Jim Brazen. Both young men shot 76's in the W.B.L. playoff, only to be beaten in sudden death. On the first hole Brazen's par gave him a second place finish, while Conn's bogey gave him a third place finish. Experience and team consistency played a vital role in the Cougar's success this season. Playing their last year for Van Wert were Most Improved Player, Dave Conn, Bob Ferrell, Craig Hangartnerg and Kevin Prill. . E F 'eq .54 , ,Akai gg A ' 1., .f , , , if f,,, -,. Much of the success was achieved by a team willing to withstand summer conditioning and grueling mileage to achieve team and personal goals. Three of the four 1978 losses were to teams which qualified for State Competition in Columbus. Highlights of the season included a third place finish in the W.B.L., a 7th out of 21 teams at Findlay, and 5th out of 14 teams in the sectional.
