The Masque and Gavel Club, an organization open to students interested in any phase of speech, maintained a very active schedule this year. Members of each class prepared programs for the meetings, and the group presented programs for seventeen dif- ferent organizations in Van Wert. The debate teams began the season with a prac- tice session at Ohio State University. They partici- pated in tournaments at Marysville and Delaware- Willis and competed in the Bowling Green District Contest. The varsity team won second place in the district. The declamation team participated in four divi- sions: oratory, humorous, original oratory, and dra- matic. Judy Harden won first place in original ora- tory and Sally Stewart placed second. Karen Geis- man captured first place in straight oratory. Sue Sheldon placed second in dramatics and Sally Thompson was named alternate. Lois Hoffman was the alternate in the humorous division. The Thespians held an induction banquet on May 23 at which they welcomed eighteen new members. The program consisted of a cutting from Noel Cow- ard's Blithe Spirit and the presentation of awards. Sally Coombs and Chris Griffiths were each awarded a cup for their outstanding debating. Judy Harden won the Outstanding Thespian of the Year award. In its second year, our Thespian Troupe won seventh ranking in the state.

Under the direc- tion of Clyde Coon, speech instructor of the high school, they presented the comedy Sev- enteen, which is the story of Willie Baxter, a typical teen-ager, who thinks that girls have absolutely no place in his life until he meets Lola Pratt. Of course, like all teen-agers, he has his problems too. Among these are his kid sister, Jane, who always sems to get him in Hhot waterf' and George Crooper. George and Willie are constantly trying to outdo each other in an attempt to impress Lola. The play was greatly enjoyed by everyone. Blanke.
