-'! Z3j'-- .. g if-S557 This was the year for Calypso, roll-up sleeves, and Elvis Presley. The formation of the Crazy Eight dance band, the newly organized young people's political party, and those Rock 'N' Roll kids, the Feeble Few-all these were the result of ambitious efiorts of V. W. H. S. stu- dents. The Carhorundum plant was a Christmas present to Van VVert. Plans for a new high school site were dis- cussed and settled in May. Pizza pie, and tours through Van Wert at four o'Cloek in the morning were novelties at the slumber parties, Of Course, gossip replaced sleep. Friendly Persuasion, Giant, Funny Face. and Around the VVorld in Eighty Days rated high among the movie set. At the top of the Hit Parade were Tommy Sand's Teenage Crush, Elvis's Love Me Tender, and Como's Hound and Round. NVe marveled at Charles-Van Doren on Twenty-One, laughed at Jonathan Winters, and again voted the Ed Sullivan Show the top variety pro- gram on T. V. oh Q15 - vi t x .gf ,-Fi-'X 'il ,. pu ., Sf Lefti Carol Grindahl and Dave Gamble are outstanding for their well-dressed look. Nan Cowan and Ron Dierks are remembered for their pleasing personalities and friendly ways. Pat Holtschult and Don Sehnepp are noted for their winning smiles. Above: The class selected Caroline Scott and Stan Smith as the most helpful members. Sally Coombs and Terry Devine are destined for success in their chosen fields. Wit and humor nat- urally suggest Jean Bennett and Jerry Baer.

Back clusters of curls were the vogue in girls' hair styles. Right: For ath- letic prowess, Diane Roth and Larry Smith are tops. Queen Nun Nan Cowan was crowned queen of the tenth annual Homecoming festivities on October 5. At the halftime ceremonies, Linda Kirchenbauer, the preceding year's queen, officiated at the crowningg and the cheerleaders, representing the co-captains, presented the royal scepter and bouquet of roses. To add to the joyous occasion, we defeated Lima Shawnee. The dance, following the game, centered around the theme The Queen and I. The gym was appropriately decorated as a ballroom with sparkling chandeliers and with a red and silver background. At intermission the class presidents gave the queen and her lovely court gifts provided by the Scarlet Quill Staff. A sextette of senior girls entertained with music from 4'The King and I. Dancing continued to the music of The Rhapsodiers from St. Maryls. All in all, the evening was a memorable occasion and a highlight of the school year. I2
