V SCHOOL BOARD LEFT TO RIGHT: Donald White, Vice-Presidentg Henry Priorg R. D. Bennetg Hazel Gleason, Presidentg Walter Tolang Cyril Bechtolg F. Earl Shaffer, Clerk. The school board is composed of a group of civic minded citizens who sacrifice their time and careers so that Van Wert may have a better school system. Due gratitude should be expressed to them for their fine governoring of our schools. 8 MR. BAKER We, the members of the class of 1954, have considered our- selves especially fortunate to have had Mr, Baker as our friend and counsellor for our 4 years of high school life. Since high school is not all work and no play , Mr. Baker has shown us that he is not only highly competent in the MR. GALAPOO As head of the guidance department of V. W. H. S., Mr. Gallapoo has labored long and tirelessly to help the students of the high school find part time employment, help him decide on his life career, or perhaps advise him of a particular college. What- ever he is engaged in, you can be sure he will gladly pitch in and help so someone else may benefit. He has proved himself to be able to teach in the classroom also. Van Wert should be proud to have Mr. Gallapoo as a member of the faculty. MR. BENNET Mr. Bennet serves as superintendent of schools in the city of Van Wert and is a very busy man. He still finds time, how- ever, to take a personal interest in the functions of the high schools and its students. The class of '5-I is happy to have had the acquaintance of such a man and we know Mr. Bennet will continue doing his best for Van Wert High. scholastic part of high school but that he will also go far out of his way to assist the individual or the various clubs in planning their programs. We are proud to have had Mr. Baker as our principal and we hope that we will be able to live up to the high qualities and good citizenship which he has tried to instill in us at all times. 9 wi Q'-'W -.1....., 1 f 1 , 5.1 1v..g...5,,?,., Lf'f ' : f ' 'Z f U M J ' W -- , I 7 Ze V . Yet our loyalty to the school has grown and grown, until now, at com- mencement time, it has reached the peak. We hope this devotion will always remain this way. Even when we were little frosh, we started looking forward to the day when we would be SENIORS. Yet, we knew that would be quite a while, so we began living our days one by one. We elected the following people to represent us during our freshman year, President, John Blake, Vice-President, Kathleen Moore, Secretary, Loretta Huffineg Treasurer, Reha Elston. During our Sophomore year the following people were elected: President, Ben Spieth, Vice-President, Mary Jerome: Secretary, Karen Brockert, Treasurer, Reha Elston. When we became juniors we began to feel like wheels at last. We had complete charge of the junior-Senior Prom: we presented our first class playg and we ordered our class rings. The class officers chosen that year were President, Dan Murphy, Vice-President, Kathleen Moore, Secretary, Ann Helman, Treasurer, Kay Preston. We elected the following people to lead the class of 1954, President, Bill Dias, Vice-President, John Blake: Secretary, Loretta Huflineg Treasurer, joy Preston. Of course, there were other leaders in our class. Presidents of various organizations were: G.A.A. Barbara LaLondag Y-Teens, Joan Wells, V-Club, Trav Kouts, Senior Hi-Y, john Blake, F.F.A., Fred Giesslerg F.T.A., Judy Nashg Rondezvous, Trav Koutsg Student Council, Phil Tanner, and National Honor Society, Chuck Richey. Five of the more energetic girls of our class who have been cheerleaders were, Vangie Barrientoes, with three years to her creditg Carolyn Bradford, two yearsg Joanne Johnson, two years: Jane Good, one yearg and Nancy Imler, one year. Reha Elston and Loretta Hufline did a line job of strutting before the band. Our very lovely homecoming queen this year was Kay Brown, who previously had been an attendant for two years. Kay's attendant this year was Shirley Speak- man. The girls chosen to take the D.A.R. Good Citizen- ship Test were Reha Elston, Ginger Miller, Kathleen Moore, joy Preston, and Sue Rager. The Junior Rotarians were John Blake, Fred Giessler, Dave Heftel, Dick Giessler, Tom Kiggins, Steve Moyer, Dan Murphy, joe Raabe, Chuck Richey, and Phil Tanner. Those rambunctious lads who helped our Cougar foot- ball team were Roger Agler, Bill Dias, Gerry Dierks, Ron Doner, Gale Gilliland, Trav Kouts, Dan McCona- hay, Chuck Richey, Phil Tanner, Lester Wisener. The outstanding backheldman was Dan McConahay, and the lineman was Phil Tanner. Chosen on the W.B.L. team were Bill Dias, Gale Gilliland, Ron Doner, and Chuck Richey. The manager was Ron Lowe. Our basketball team included these seniors, Dave Heftel, Stan Miller, Dan Murphy, and Chuck Richey. The team's manager was Bill Waldron. Their team won the Celina tournament during our Junior and Senior years. And then there was a baseball team, too. Roger Agler, Dick Giessler, Bill Gipe, Dan Murphy, and Chuck Richey helped to make up this team. During our high school life there were certain high- lights which we shall not easily forget. The a Capella choir received a 1 in state contest for three straight years and the 1952-1953 football team was W. B. L. champs. Members of the National Honor Society who were elected our junior year were Chuck Richey, President, Kathleen Moore, Vice-President, Kay Brown, Secretary, Ann Helman, Treasurer. The new members are Karen Brockert, Marcia Miller, Ginger Miller, Reha Elston, joan Wells, and Steve Moyer. Last, but certainly not the least, was commencement. We hope in some small way each member of the class of 1954 has contributed to the betterment of the school. We sincerely want to thank all our teachers for all the headaches and the enjoyments which they have helped us through. Thus with the foundation that has been laid for us these past four years, we hope that someday Van Wert High will say of the class of '54, We're proud of you. But we bravely stumbled our way through the first week and found that, as the saying goes, Its bark is worse than its bite. When the ballots were counted after our cam- paigns for offices, we had elected Ronnie Dierks, our president, Miriam Price, vice-president, Sally Coombs, secretary, and Diane Roth, treasurer. To represent our class on the Student Council, we chose Jerry Baer, who later transferred to another school, Larry Smith, John Saylor, and Nan Cowan. Janice Prior was our representative on the G.A.A. Cabinet. Carrying the pigskin through a successful sea- son, the members of the Freshman Football team were: David Allen, Ronnie Brennaman, Ronnie Dierks, Don Ford, Dave Gamble, Don Good, Ron Krick, Larry Kriescher, Mike Pheneger, jim Press- ler, Ron Robeson, john Saylor, Paul Schwinnen, Larry Smith, Orville Stetler, Meredith Wade, and Bill Winters. Two from our class, john Edwards and Larry Feeney, played on the varsity football squad. We chose Nan Cowan to be Freshman Attend- ant during Homecoming Festivities. Ronnie Dierks, Dave Gamble, Don Good, Ron Krick, Tom Nott, Paul Schwinnen, Jim Smith, Larry Smith, and Ronny Spray played on the Freshman Basketball team. They won ll out of 16 games. With this year behind us, we are leaving our place as Greenies to go on to new and better experiences. We're looking forward, with high hearts, to the rest of our high school years. wfztkir .fi 'na 1-Q 4' Q Nw Ronnie Brenneman Bill Bressler Frank Brown Peg Brown Dick Judy J udv Sally ffl Caldwell Coffelr Conn Coombs James Agler Joe Agler Larry Agler David Allen Joe Allen Jim Anderson Mauvette August Lillie Baker Judith Beall Jean Bennett Barbara Blanke Frank Borolf Nan Cowan Eddie DeCamp Richard De-Camp Terry DeVine Ronnie Dierks Barbara Ditto Joyce Donahue John Downs Pat Dull John Edwards Donald Elzey Janet Fauble Ann Feeney Larry Feeney Donald Ford Bill Fowler David Gamble Douglas Geary Marie Geisrnan Mary Lou Germann Martha Gingrich Jim Goins Don Good Neil Good gig A ill M K ' George Green U 4,,, ,, if rm , , i V. x Q 'A U A Carol Grindahl V' J 'll' Earl Hainline 1 - - I f Luella Hainline La E- QCLQJL f 6 1 A Judy Harden 5 ' I ' Dianne Hardin h Carolyn Hartge . The story concerns jerry Latimer, who along with her Mother and Grandmother. has just moved to the city. jenny is quite at ease in her home life, especially with her understanding Gran, yet a little uncertain in her approach to other people. She does make one special friend in her new environ- ment, Tess. Tess is a lovable girl who accepts life as she finds it and enjoys every minute of it. Tess has a brother Ed, who is very sincere and very friendly. Their older sister, Vivian, has a tinge of resentment about her, but she really isn't as hard-hearted as she lets you believe. Tess's boy friend, Martin. is a slow, easy-going type of fellow who never has too much to say, probably because he never has a chance. Barbara, an extremely lovely girl, tells her boy friend, Pat, who is also very good-look- ing, that she will be on vacation at the time of the winter formal. Barbara suggests that Pat take jenny, about whom Barbara thinks she need not worry. When Barbara comes home on the day of the dance, she really complicates matters. A very exciting scene concludes the performance of a wonderful evening of entertainment. A group of exceptionally talented stu- dents made up the cast of this production.
