Miss Bowyer HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1951 Bang !Bang !We started our high school year in fine fashion with the all important initiation. Since we were Freshmen, we have been highest in the high school in spelling and most of the time we have been highest in the county. What a record! A few of us took the scholarship tests at Defiance. We had one honorable mention in the state. Think of that! Jim Moorman was our president then and he still is! Our Sophomore year was about the quietestwe have had. Everybody knows how quiet the Juniors can be! Two of the girls had poems entered in the Annual National Anthology of High School poetry, Our Junior year began with nine of our students four class gets smaller all the timej, We had a play, Miss Jimmy, which the audience enjoyed and so did we. Another of our class had a poem selected for the Anthology. She received a certificate this time, We have a few aims and you know the motto, Make the best better, Well, that's what we're going to do the rest of the year and the next. This consisted of four Freshmen, six Sophomores, three Juniors and four Seniors. Coach Robert Sieren has coached the boys this year and we compliment him for his fine work. The Ridge Tigers lost several games by only 3 or4 points. We started the season against a veteran Middle Point team. We hope the team does as well in the future although we lose four seniors. They are: Perry, Tomlinson, Wollenhaupt and Van Wynesburghe. We sincerely hope these boys, also the remaining seniors will continue their fair and square plays in the life which they are about to enter, Also, we honor the underclassman participating this year and sincerely desire to have them continue to preserve the honorable name Ridge Basketball boys have established for themselves as well as for the school. Singing for the joy of it is fast becoming the motto of more and more students at Ridge. This year the Girls' Sextette continued its activities through the summer months. In August they presented broadcasts from Music Hall and the Little Theatre at the Ohio State Fair, The first production of the Girls' Glee Club for the year was aChora1 Concert in November in the theme of Thanksgiving with songs of thanks and praise. Featured on this program was the newly organized Junior High Girls' Ensemble. For the Christmas program the grades presented the operetta, When Toys Come to Life. This was preceded by a Candlelight Concert by the Junior High Chorus. Selections by the Glee Club concluded the program high lighted by the Hallelujah Chorus, Dotty Lou Stewart and Joan Johnson had the honor of being selected to sing in the All- State Chorus which presented a concert of the InternationalFolkFestival. Dr. Charles Hirt, of the University of Southern California conducted. In the words of the students: It was in- deed a thrill and inspiration to be a part of sucha group--a wonderful experience which we shall never forget. High School music students participated in the County Music Festival held at Ohio City March 24. The most enjoyable number proved to be Dry Bones for which we provided the sound effects and accompanist. We were represented at the District Solo and Ensemble Auditions at Bowling Green April 1 by Bonnie Lu Logan, Piano Solo, Dotty Lou Stewart, Soprano Solog Joan Johnson, Contralto Solog and the Sextette singing H0! Mr. Piper. The grade students held their Spring Music Festival in May. The last half of the program featured a Minstrel Show prepared and produced by the Junior High Chorus. Colorful formals against a background of garden flowers made the setting for the high school Spring Concert also held in May. The Glee Club also provided the music for the Baccalaureate program--and so the end of another musical year. Special recognition should go to Bonnie Lu Logan for her splendid workas accompanist for our Music groups. Grandpa enjoyed poor health and the thrill of ordering people about especially at his medicine tirne, He worried over how to es- cape the persistant efforts of the Widow Williams to catch her fourth husband-the others being peacefully rested under the sod. Living with Grandpa was Clara and her hen- pecked husband couldn't even call his own tongue and words his own, she wanted to let- Edgar act as Grandpa's guardian in charge of his money, of course. Then, there was Louise, his grand niece, who wanted his money, too, and her prospective bridegroom, Henry Collins, who wanted Louise only if she had the definite prospects of being an 30 . There was the cook, Maggie, who wanted ahusband and was will- ing to pay a mail-order Matrimonial Bureau ten dollars for a suitable prospect. Grandpa decided to play his own twin sister so that Widow Williams could not trap him. Grandpa finds Wido Williams a husband, who is Adam McPherson, Maggie's Mail- order husband. Maggie stays on as a cook, and Grandpa was going to the Abner Hatcher Hospital as soon as it was built to have peace. IIIASS PIIUPHHTY I went to the library one day to get a very interesting book. As I went through the shelves of books upon books on end, I finally came to a little book of Green and Gold with the title of Ridge Class of '50, which looked very in- teresting to me. I took the book to the librarian to check out for me. She looked at me in a strange manner, but I knew what I was doing, or at least I thought I did. As I went home on the busy bus, I won- dered if I had made the right selection. Of course I had. I could hardly wait to start reading the book, so I started right away. It had twelve different chapters each which was about a different person. The chapters had an out- line at the beginning, so I will try and give you a little preview of the book, The first chapter was about Dean Tom- linson. It told all about his life through school and then after school. He had farmed and lived in a large mansion on the Lincoln Highway with Phyllis as his wife. What a life, I do believe, they had! The second chapter was about Shirley Davies. She had long pigtails all the way through school and then finally she had them cut off. When she got out of school she didn't live so far from Dean, but instead she lived down the Marsh Road in a nice little house with several children and, of course, Dale too. The third chapter was all about Carl Wollenhaupt. What a life he did live while he was in school. He dreamed of the time he could walk over his farm and say, This is my farm of which I am proud. Well, who wouldn't be withanice farm and home on the Mendon Road! The fourth chapter consists of the life of Margaret Reidenbach, a very tiny girl, but she seemed to do all right in school. After she graduated she took the position as a private secretary, What a life that would be if she had lived it,but she married instead, a tall handsome youth, 31 The fifth chapter took place just off the Lincoln Highway. It is a nice dairy farm. Bill Fair really took a great interest in the dairy and had so many cows you couldn't count them all. He ran out of names for them. Oh! no, we didn't forget his wife either as her name was Helen. The sixth chapter consists of the life and living of Louise Goodwin. It is very in- teresting to be sure, She lived near Rose Lake in Michigan and has a very large house, Behind it a little cottage where she keeps her friends over the week end. Oh!her hus- band you would like to know about is Maurice , who is a college professor from Oklahoma. Now, I am justhalfway through the book. The next life was Frank Bartal. He was living in a large city, where he has an auto mechanics shop. He was doing quite well for himself. Mary Alice O'Leary is the next famous person's life of which I read. She lived in Van Wert, on Fourth Street in a very large house with her husband, Chuck. Oh! yes, I read that her mother was a grandmother too. Albert Van Wynsberghe was the next, Honest Abe' well maybe. One must never commit himself, but he lived in Indiana and is working as the foreman in a large plant there. He was doing very well. The nextchapter told of Maurice Perry, He had a very large farm on the Lincoln Highway, and a small house in which his wife, Janet, took very good care of him. Rosey Griffin from the South is next. Her life consisted of going back and forth from the North to the South, What a life, traveling! She liked to.travel very much, as that way she got to know more people. The last chapter was the life of Esther Byers. She was a telephone operator in Texas. She likes her work very well. Now, as I close the little Green and Gold book, I see what life can mean to each one of the Class of '50, MASS HISHIRY The great day had arrived, we were going to school. Our first grade teacher was Mildred Tribolet.Nothing much happened except we were having to learn when to talk and how to talk, which was pretty hard for some of us! Now to our second and third grade, Miss Slattery was our teacher. We were now realizing whether we really liked school or not. Opinions differed. We were getting to be older, Why just think we were in the fourth and fifth grade. Our teachers were Miss Unkapher and Virginia Smith and Mr. Putman. Still nothing exciting. Mrs. Allen was our sixth grade teacher. We were in Jr. High now and so we had High School teachers, In our eighth grade this changed and we were taught by Mrs. Allen. We started our Freshman year with initiation and we were glad when it was over. We had a Halloween party at Margaret Reidenbach's home. Margaret Reidenbach, Mary Alice O'Leary and William Fair went to Defiance to take Scholarship tests. We started our Sophomore year by having a Halloween party and Hayride and Christmas party which was held at Rosey Griffin's. We sold pop corn at the Basketball games. This year Carl Wollenhaupt and Rosey Griffin went to take the Scholarship tests, We had a Halloween party at the Roadside Park. We also had a Christmas party at Shirley Davies' and a Theatre party at Celina. We sold Candy at the basketball games, Maurice Perry and Margaret Reidenbach went to Defiance. We had our .Tunior Class Play Grand- pa's Twin Sister, which we hope everyone enjoyed seeing as much as we enjoyed putting it on. Our Junior-Senior Prom had the theme Far Away Places in which we were entertained by Don Underwood's Orchestra, We were grateful to the mothers who cooked the meal to help make the Prom a success, We had a very nice time at the Prom the Juniors gave us. We gave the play Home Came Hattie for our Senior Class Play.Every- one enjoyed our Christmas party at Shirley Davies' home. Now happy days are here for some, for others it is a sad affair. Our Baccalaurate was May 21. Our Commencement was May 24, We went to Washington D.C. on our Class Trip. We left May 29 and got back June 3rd, This ends our great days at Ridge. 32 Giving instructions Byron dating Joan Posing Freshman initiation R ockford basketball game Don, posing Senior boys Stupid sophomore The catcher Middle Point basketball game Yea, Team Little Esther Loyal fan Missed again Three Musketeers Three stooges Your OUT Evelyn posing Strike three Was it completed Q 4 .Mr 4. .1 20, 33 F- .F '17s-...iv cf , .
