United 60h Uictofznl Throughout the year VHS students and the people of the surrounding area have been engaged in many types of war work in keeping their slogan, United for Victory. Pupils devoted their afternoons to helping farmers gather the crops when the school restricted classes to morning sessions for the first live weeks in the fall, and helped with the planting during the spring recess. ln October the entire student body took part in the milkweed pod collection campaign and turned in 350 bags of pods. The VHS Higlzliglzts staif again undertook to send the paper to the service alumni. The necessary funds for postage came from individual contributors and the service dance sponsored by the staff in September. Tuesday was set aside as stamp and bond day and each week everyone from the kindergarten children to the faculty bought his share. During the special nation- wide drives, the classes competed in buying bonds and sponsored assembly pro- grams to boost tl1e sales. Several home rooms were also enrolled one hundred per cent in the 'lunior Red Cross, and the school's contribution was sent to headquarters to help with that important war work. Une of the most popular social events of the year was the XNar Chest ,lamboree in October where the main attraction was the old-fashioned country auction. Among the articles offered for sale were butter, sugar, cigarettes, steaks, wood, cakes, pastries, straw, and chickens. Total proceeds were approximately one thousand dollars. YIIS planned its physical education and health classes in accordance with the national fitness program. Members of the l'-T. QX. contributed money for operating the cafeteria which this year served a nutritious hot lunch to all students free of charge, and sold sandwiches. ice cream, and fruit. ln the homemaking class at night school instruction centered around the essen- tials of a good diet and taught women how to provide wholesome meals for their families in spite of wartime rationing. The adult agricultural group studies were concentrated on ways to increase production to help meet the growing needs of the nation. Thus, everyone in Yan Hornesville and the centralized district is doing his small share in helping win the war. VVe're proud of the way our 197 school alumni and teachers in the armed forces are doing their job and we want them to be proud of us for doing our best to see that they come home in the near future. The 1045 O tsquagun
