TH E SPORT PROGRAM Once again the VHS boys engaged in a vigorous physical education program designed to de- velop sturdy, healthy bodies, and alert minds. Principal Robert Vlfoodruff, alias Coach, continued to direct the activities. All 40 high school boys participated in football this year and both an II-1113.11 and a six-man schedule were played. The younger lads, known as the jayvees', embarked upon their own series of six-man games. A The varsity won three out of four six-man encounters, and finished second in the Cherry Valley league. VVhile these younger boys failed to win many games, they derived valuable training for the future. On the girls' side of the held the familiar crack of hockey sticks was again heard as Miss Edna Austin, language instructor, supervised this sport. Five games were played with victories over Cherry Valley and Richfield, a tie with West VVinheld, and losses to Richfield and West Winlielcl. Wrestliiig, which is usually the big sport at VHS, was curtailed somewhat this year due to the severe winter which forced the school to close on many occasions during the grappling season. The boys man- aged, however, to engage in a six-meet schedule and to participate in the Upper New York State Wrestliiig tournament at Norwich during March. 2 X Spring sports again included track and intramural softball. Tennis and swimming were engaged in later in the season. The students of VHS have, therefore, been given a well-rounded physical education program which should be of help in fitting them for the armed forces, or for any vocation they may enter in the future.
