As you wait for the agonizing 10 seconds to go by you think of all your homework for the weekend. Then you suddenly hear your ticket to escape. Friday Night: 8:00 p.m. comes around and crowds of students gather around to stand in line to see the Van Horn ootball game. After the victory-most students find a local McDonalds or Burger King to celebrate. Sometimes they're out until early morning hours discussing the game or how their day went. lt really doesn't matter what they talk about, I Saturday Night: - V ' ' You're cruisin down Noland road,it's a normal Saturday night., Your eyes are cauglit on a sign that says Down Under 8 p.m,-3 a.m. . ou decide to in- vestigatewthe premises' It's a club. Whether they're all blue or just halt bIue,half gray, they're still jean jackets and they're here to stay. ' A Van Horn Style Fashion plays an important role in teenagers lives. It may be THE most important thing in your life. As you get up in the morning, you think of what to wear, how to do your hair dif- ferent, and whether or not to wear stone- washed jeans or your faded, bleached jeans tbelieve me, there is a differencej. Falcons have many different styles this year. Some may stay up half the night making friendship bracelets to give out the next day. Friendship bracelets started before this year, however they came back just as mini-skirts came back. The theory that, History repeats itseIf is very true. l'm sure you've seen the earrings with a key clinging onto it, as if afraid to lose it, or perhaps you've noticed that wrestling shoes are not just for wrestling. Time has it's moment in fashion too, for in- stance, you never walk around with just one watch on your wrist. You might then see a few watches clinging onto someones' ankle. And now for what you've all been waiting for . . . Spuds Mackenzie! Shirts, hats, stuffed animals, posters, and towels. . Thinkin' about a new hair cut? What about getting it shaved on just the sides? How about making lines from one side of your head to the other side? Iahad, just one hour Ielt and was still beaming about it when I realiz- ed where and what it was: geometrygon the third floor. Vthth a grunt and leap up the stairs,VI was off. It was funny how five minutes oouldiseem' so long in sixth hour at 2:15 but it seemed almost instan- taneous when you have that same amount of time in the halls. . ' ' A I glanced down at my watch as I approached the vending machines in the long hall and it' informed me I had two minutes left. It seemed that I had plen- ty ot time, but when I looked back up my hopes dropped as my mouth did.'The entire hallway was nothing more than a carpet of student's heads,mov- ing along gradually. It looked as if that mass of students was one that Moses oouldn't even part. Shrugging my shoulders twith ninety-seconds Ieflj. I he d my breath and dove into the slow-moving mob. When my watch approached the thirty second mark and l'd only made it halfway down the hall, the crowd started thinning as the result of everyone finally trying to get to class. Seeing more and more ages, I sprinted and dodged, making it to the third r just as the bell screamed. Need ess to say, I'm in the overtime room now writing' this. Fall Sports After everyone returns from the sum- mer break refreshed and tanned they may not necessarily be ready to hit the books and start studying but they are certainly pumped up with renewed energy and a revived Falcon spirit. The fall sports season provides an outlet for the excess energy and school spirit stored up over the always-too-short summer. Since the short-lived season is dominated mainly by the efforts of our football teams complemented by the en- the Falconettes some of the other fall sports activities are somewhat lost in the on but you can surely hear the sup- porters that are there. SADD fStudents Against Drunk Drivingl was formed this year by Mr. Nolan and Mrs. Constable. The idea of SADD is to inform teenagers that driving drunk is risking your life and your friends lives. Its really a great activity to be a part of. lf you can save someones life that would be the greatest gift to anyone. Driving drunk is the number one cause of death among teenagers today. By forming clubs such as SADD, teenagers are becoming more aware and the amount by deaths are decreasing. The group this year is great to be in. We meet every Monday after school and talk about how we can help others become more educated on the facts about drunk driving. Don't froget if you see your friend has had to much to drink and has to drive home, don't let him make the mistake of risking his life, get someone to drive for him or call a cab, better yet, let them stay at your house until they're sober enough to drive. It will be the best thing you ever did. Students listen in as Mrs. Con- stable talks. The Chiefs Corps is a community and public relations program that extends throughout the Kansas City school district Van Horn being one of the nine schools presently involved. It is basically an incentive program in which high school students are motivated to achieve goals and make commitments for academic improvment. Students who have noticeably increased their grade point average or have otherwise excelled academically are selected by Van Horn s ad- ministrators and are acknowledged for their efforts with tickets to a Chiefs home game where they are offically honored. This year's Chiefs player representative for Van Horn was the quarter- back, Todd Blackledge. What about the wild decorations at the dances? A group of talented students, who are never recognized for their outstanding projects, is the art club. The art club is a group of students that draw tor different activities. They stay after school and work on their projects whenever needed. The decora- tions at dances and bannisters are plann- ed and created by the art club. Another big event that the art club is needed for is Vantasia. They make all the props for the shows. Your heart begins to feel the beat of the fabulous music coming from Mr. Freeman's room. Concert Choir is a special choir selected by Mr. Freeman, the director. You see, you just can't stop by and enroll, you must be auditioned. This makes the concert choir the best and gives the members a sense of importance. The standards are very high and include self- control, as well as the ability to read music. This year's choir is the show choir which means that the songs they perform are choreographed with dancing along with singing. Concert Choir has a total of 80 members and is continuing to grow stronger. They have already performed once for parents on parents day and are about ready to embark on the holiday season tour. Concert Choir has many perfor- mances singing at different places in the community, such places include The Jackson County Detention Center , City Hall , Universal Hospital, and Univer- sal Senior Citizens Home. Concert Choir works as a team and contributed S100 to United Way thus being the top homeroom and will have a pizza party for being the top. The Concert Choir officers are Angela Watson - president, Leigh Brooks - vice-president, Latasha Black - secretary and Darryl Hamby - sgt.- at-arms. Kelly also added, I believe that the first and second lunch periods get the good lun- ches and the rest of us get what remains. So some of us bring our lunches. Besides the food that's troubling the student body, l'd like to bring up a few other touchy subjects. Like the amount of time you spend in the lunch line. You'd think give us more time to eat! When you finally get your lunch, you come to your table to find that someone has stolen yourchair! The last question we asked Kelly was, What would you rate our cafeteria on a scale of oneto ten? She replied, A six. Not so good, not so bad. I want a gold chain, gold watch, sporty clothes and, most im- portantly, MONEY! An average Christmas morning for Sheila consists of getting up at 7:00 am and running to the Christmas tree. Then to tear open the many gifts their parents and relatives have brought. And, of course, the ones Santa Claus brought who Sheila truly believes in Dinner is the second best thing about the day Usually turkey potatoe salad and deserts make up the menu After the family gathering is over Sheila calls her many friends to see how they did We mustnt forget that the true meaning of Christmas :sn t receiving gifts or eating dinner lt s why we re here on earth and the birth of the infant Jesus This is really why we celebrate such a joyful holiday e gifts are nice though' ji! fs 4' x.Z T Q35 ?'?1 f- Garner Michelle Gates Tony Garson Sherrie Geiger Christy Granger Anthony Gray Shelton Green Betty Green Susan , . . , ' ' v I I ' I . . - th . . , 2--.xx Ptah, 5' 4, ' ' gif, . Initiated by some students in the sophomore class 1 sponsored by Ms. Stallings, SCHOOL CStudents Carin ldi the Homeless Out Of Lovel, began it's first year in 1387, The program, which was designed and organized by Fatema Weekly ,Teresa Ligre , and George Boyd ,was designed to do just as the title dictates: to care for the ' homeless in Kansas City out of love. One of the first events set up by the club was taking donations in thecafeteria. The club also posted signs throughout the building soliciting donations of money, clothes and other living necessities. The program also hopes to collaborate with the Salvation Army and possibly set up shelters for the homeless. Fatema Weekly commented on the motives of the group: I think the program's good because it's helping other people have a Christmas. And not just Christmas, we want to help them every day. Activities wane, and until they become juniors, a number of other activities escape them. The year is then dedicated to school work, dragging the nine months into something much more excruciatingly mundane. We just thought it was a false alarm and laughed it off. Then the bell was just about to ring when Mr. Turner came on the intercom and said that we were having a fire drill. The students who saw the firetrucks knew that this was no drill! As we evacuated the building, the administraters were standing by the front doors eagerly instructing us to get outiof the building as fast as possible. Then came the long cold wait. saw a few taking turns with Traci Brown's prized fur coat. Mr. Kaifes, of course, was worried about saving his six dollar new spectacles. Mr. Vardyan wasn't concerned about the English books because he has already memorized all the rules in the English language. Mrs. Bassa needed the break from her speech class anyway, although she probably wished it was during drama instead of speech. Anyway, the fire was out within 5 minutes. Later, we discovered it was located in the girls locker room. lt was a small fire, however, the security guards reported that they could've ceased it only if the smoke hadn't been so thick. School proceeded the next day and so did gym class, I asked a few students what they would risk their lives to save and here's some of their replies . .. Elizabeth Atwood and Kim Slifer both voted to save the good looking single guys at our school tThe whole 3 that there are.J Mike Ostrander wanted to save his news from Mr. Riggs class, and Beth Finch wanted desparately to saveher Vardyan Log. .er pa-. mm! , X is .,-.7 J 5 KM ljanhfih fix ' A 1.j' as ,ca Ny Q 1 'gl f 0. 9 3 , - ,,f - ' s - 'Z p.. if . 1 1 3 ,- -v , llA1v0':rll hl Z- 'fi' 'Q afx rw mi. But the entire year wasn't spent in such a carefree frame of mind, thanks to Stout's sometimes abrupt reminders and Stephen's subtle nudges at attempting to beat the notorious deadline.
