President] Sherry i3urch (Reporter) Gaylord Gatewood (Treasurer) Ah yes, it was finally here ... a year of some serious mixed emotions. On one hand, it was the last year and we were finally through with high school, but yet it was the end of a lot of friendships which we vowed to keep alive while we knew we really wouldn’t. It was also a year of many ques- tions. Were we going to make it?, were we choosing the right major and college?, and so many, many more uncertainties. We had made so many friends not only with students, but also with the faculty and teachers. We felt as though Van Horn was our sec- ond home and we would always be welcome. As much as we hated to leave, we had to spread our wings and fly from this nest into the big world around us. We would leave the school to the class of 1985 and we hope that they will work toward the improvement of the school as we did. 39 Senior Personalities 40 41 Jlie dlaSS oj? An Office aide’s job is to help the faculties’ job go a little bit smoother and make their jobs less complicated while we are receiving a grade for the performance that we show day after day. Rodney Hampton enjoys being an office aide and helping Mrs. Byfield as much as possible. According to Sherry Burch, her favorite part of the job is “leaving people waiting at the desk,” and “getting first hand news because we are there where it happens.” 46 Jobs for Missouri Graduates Left to right: Cheryl Lewis. The sponsors of the program are two energetic people, Mr. Jenkins and Ms. Wright. The JMG is an outstanding organization from what I understand. It is the only link it seems, between the Schools and business world. The JMG allows the student to take a peek before they can really see. The sponsors are outstanding and they have an outstanding program. “Three Cheers for the JMG,” said by SGT. Milow, Military Science department. 47 First Row: Eddie Hall. Van Horn’s AFS club is a group of spirited students who enjoy many fun activities together, such as spending an afternoon at the Renaissance Festival, going to Chicago for the weekend, ice skating, eating pizza, and seeing the “Rocky Horror” show. Despite our own foreign exchange student’s departure in October, the AFS club con- tinued, raising money to send some of our own Van Horn students abroad. Van Florn’s AFS club is proud to say that we are one of the most active clubs in the Kansas City area, and we would like to thank our sponsor, Mr. Neal Matticks, for the fine support and encouragement he has given us throughout the year. The show was good overall.” commended Matt Shearhart. There were more than twenty performers in the show. Without the many good acts in the show, Vantasia would have been another (bloop!). This past year a new discipline program of “Assertive Discipline” was introduced to Van Horn. This program emphasized discipline and learning. While the administration worked on the discipline aspects, the National Honor Society worked on reinforcing aspects and consequences through the use of their annual honors reception and other similar ideas. In doing so, they hoped to encourage present and future students to work on their study habits and assume responsibilities for improvement of education and learning. Whenever something went wrong at an assembly, who got blamed? It was a hard working, behind the scenes group called Stagecrew. Stagecrew was in charge of lights, sounds, props, etc. Although they worked hard, something always seemed to go wrong. It was usually the sound that gave them the most problem. Even though it had been replaced several times in the past years as a senior gift, the equipment was mistreated and often needed repairing. Despite the boos, and rough treatment, stagecrew always strived to do their best with what they had. They used a new and improved format. The newspaper is now smaller and easy to carry. The Pioneer Staff also worked on many fundraisers. Freddy the Falcon was one of them. They also sold “grams” to put in the newspaper. “The format for The Pioneer covered more events about Van Horn so that outside readers could know more about our school as a whole,” said Rodney Hampton. “I like to see more detail in the articles,” commented Steve Hibbs, and added, “The Pioneer is a paper to be proud of.” 59 Left to right, Top to Bottom: Eddie Overacker, Mark Dobson (President), Kenny Moberg (Vice-President), Shannon Harris (Sgt.-at-Arms), Tim Reipe, Chris Driscoll, Tom Hattem, ferry Scanlan, Larry Hackleman, Scott Stalker, Raymond Nixon, Marc Hayes, Steve Hibb$, Eddie Hall (Treasurer), Jeff Richardson (secretary), Matt Shearharl, Mark Kellogg, John Parker. 60 Kapponian Literary Society Left to right. Les Dansueres participated in many assemblies with a variety of acts consisting mostly of precision dancing, which is not as easy as it appears. It takes good timing and team work. Some such assemblies included Vantasia, Homecoming, and pep assemblies. They have also participated in a talent show at the Linwood Multi- Purpose Center, over the summer, and the City Wide Talent Show. In order to be a member you must maintain a 2.0 grade point average and make it through tryouts. You must also be able to learn routines quickly. The only officers Les Dansueres have are Antonia Mabins, attendence secretary, and Mark Mitchell, art work and scenery manager. All decisions are voted upon by majority rule. 66 Youth for Christ Kim Gray, Richard Rigsby. Robert Thorpe. Steve Hibbs, Mark Hoskins, David Merely, Penny Stiverson. Youth For Christ is a group of students who get together to share their faith and fellowship together. They meet on Monday nights where they have speakers, play games and have refreshments. Penny Stiverson enjoys the banana split parties they have. For Thanksgiving YFC held a treasure hunt and collected food for the needy. Kim Gray enjoys YFC because “it’s exciting and fun to be with friends.’’ Christy Watts says the group has “helped her out” and that she has met many friends she wouldn’t have otherwise met. Throughout the season there were five different quarterbacks off and on. This was a year of many in- juries and penalties which set us back a great deal. Halfway through the season the Varsity Football team practically started all over again, while rearranging the offensive line and backfield. The team made great improvements, however this was dif- ficult midseason. If not, you probably did not even know that there was a cross country team at Van Horn, but there was. It was a great sport to be involved in. You were not dependent on anyone’s actions except your own. You just ran and ran and ran. Up a hill you went, and then back down then up again, and down again, up ... down ... up . .. down ... up ... What kind of weird sport was that? What could be the possible point of running two miles and ending up right back where you started? ... Oh yeah, I remember now. It was the thrill of finishing, cutting down your time, or even the wonderful thrill of winning. It was that great feeling of school participation. And best yet, that Varsity letter. This year has been a real exciting year for us because we were able to participate in the International Cheerleading Foundation Summercamp where we learned to perfect our cheerleading skills. We were awarded eight ribbons for stunts and five for jumps and gymnastics that we performed. We learned from this experience to project our personalities to the crowd. We work well under pressure and always assemble a new pyramid and cheers before every game. I feel we have some things that need to be worked on like improving school spirit, better attitudes and setting a perfect example for ourselves and the student body. We would like to give our thanks to the student body, the coaches and to Mr. Griffin for their support in making our job look easier. Gaylord Gatewood 94 Junior Varsity Cheerleaders Are “Fired Up!” Bottom to Top: Genise Rainey, Wilma Bandy Co-Captain, Sherry Speake Captain, Beth fens on. Junior Varsity went to cheerleading camp at Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas. Our squad won six ribbons during the four days that we attended camp. We were also Grand Champion Finalists on the last day we were there. Junior Varsity Cheerleaders are very proud of all tnat we have accomplished this year and are looking forward to next year. Sherry Speake 95 Falcon Squad Shows Talents R. to left. From Bottom to Top: Kima Edwards, Lisa Barner, Shelia Upp. Kathy Cravens, Jennifer Michell, Christine Dyer. It takes alot of talent when it comes to making any one of the four squads. We are very proud to announce the 1984 Falcon Squad. The Falcon Squad is made up of six talented freshmen that were not quite ready for varsity or Jr. Varsity but did have a great amount of potential to make a squad. The Falcon Squad performs at the freshman games with the Freshman squad. They also performed in the Homecoming assembly, and did a great job. ‘‘Congratulations and good luck Falcon Squad.” 96 A “Freshman Cheerleaders Prove Themselves’’ How 1: YaLonda Ross, Marla Hargrove. They have showed great leadership ability as well as cheerleader skills in our assemblies and games. The Freshman Cheerleaders were very fortunate to have a helper like Gaylord Gatewood. “He’s come up to the school everyday in the summer to help us, the freshman cheerleader squad to be a good one. If it wasn’t for him, we would be like the other freshman squads.” says Co-Capt. Kim Hudson, “We are very lucky to have someone as kind and considerate as Gaylord.” says Marla Hargrove. Thanks Gaylord for all the support and time you have comitted to the squad. 97 Falconettes First Row: Rhonda WaJker, Sharon Pitre (Co-Capt.), Luanna Webb (Captain), Sharon Vereecke (Pres.). The Falconettes went to CMSU in Warrensburg for camp over the summer. They brought home a first place trophy for being a superior squad and a spirit stick for snowing all the spirit they could. As well as performing at several football and basketball games, on November 10th the Falconettes made their first real performance in front of several other schools. They performed in Pasoe’s competition and were presented the first place trophy. 98 Van Horn Pep Club Row 1: Roslyn Shaffer (secretary), Monica Saunders (reporter), Tracy Canady (president), Elonia Theus (V. Van Horn’s Computer Team “Bytes” Down Hard Dana Smith Bill Cain Mr. Vanleeuwen (sponsor) Sheryl Nance Van Horn’s computer team is fairly new but thus far has a winning history. With one trophy board full and another started, the boards speak for themselves. Van Horn is one of an elite group of schools feared when going into competitions. One of Van Horn’s main competitions is held at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. Van Horn is the only school in the history of this contest to hold two first place trophies and a second place trophy. The team pictured, Bill Cain, Dana Smith, and Sheryl Nance, have gone into three consecutive competitions together and have conquered all who stand between them and first place. Last year they placed first at Rockhurst College, who used Pascal as the language, and in the Kansas City School District. This year they placed first again at Northwest and are looking forward to Rockhurst and the Kansas City School District. Bill, Dana, and Sheryl make an excellent team but next year Sheryl and two new team members will have Van Horn’s excellent reputation thrust upon them. Will the new team keep Van Horn’s winning tradition alive? In the twenty-nine year history of our great school, the growth and tradition of the school are expressed in the interest, the purpose and the activities of its students. We continue to establish leadership to maintain in future years, sportsmanship to build better character, and scholarship to enforce the importance of knowledge. I am proud that the majority of our faculty contribute to this mental and educational process in addition to our moral and social standards. This educational progress will continue, I’m sure, to help you to arrive at higher goals and higher ideals, for if you do not use your abilities, you ideals, and your convictions, they will die just as a battery in an unused car. Constant use keeps them alive. I am proud that once again I can say, because of you, we have a “Number One” school. I am proud that I have again been able to serve another great student body. My very best wishes to each of you. “I Stand for the Red and Gray.” Your Principal, David L. Griffin 170 “I Stand for the Red and Gray!” Assistant Principals Lend Valuable Behind the Scenes Help. Thanks to Mom Perkins and Daddy Stout for making the yearbook room my second home, although I do have 1 com- plaint. I've forgotten what my first home looked like. Good luck Seniors and all those on staff. You’ve made this year a great one. To all those on yearbook: I’m glad we became friends. Well, except for the one week before deadline where everyone was upset with everyone else. To all my friends here at Van Horn: It was great? We had both good and bad, but I will always remember the good. To all those who will still be here next year: Good luck, and Seniors, do your best to make your last year count. Someday we will all understand man’s unhumanity to man! I hope! Good luck class of 84. To the staff: Thanks so much for your effort, dedica- tion, and most of all, patience and support for putting up with me through the rough spots. As a group, we are unity, as individuals, we are unique, but most of all (and this is everyone), as a Falcon, you are GREAT. Van Horn will never forget the class of ’84. TLUJ To the mighty class of 1984, we have to remember the good times as well as the bad and learn from them. For those times are our trials in life. Remember how you handled the situations in your young years, and you will be a success in life. And remember, we, the class of 1984, are the achievers of the world and we will make it in life. Sooo hey, let’s be careful out there. Ok? It’s true. Time flies when you’re having fun. This year was one of my longest years I’ve ever had, except for my Freshman year. Congratulations to the graduation Seniors, and for the ones not graduating ... What can I say??? Thanks to.all my friends and teachers for making this year, my Senior year, so special, fun, and worth remembering. fOasui People say, “Time flies when you’re having fun. This year went by very fast. What’s the deal, did somebody lie to me or what? Good luck Class of 1984. And now a word from our sponsor. I can’t think of a year the staff was more dedicated. A lot of time was spent after school — Richard, Shannon and Dana Smith had to have their legal address changed to 1109 S. Arlington. Everyone gave 110%.
