Terry Jackson — President. Not Pictured: Shawn Link — Treasurer. Brenda Wharton — Secretary. Senior class is lead this year by Terry Jackson. This year they sold class T-shirts to help raise money, but their main respon- sibilities were to order Senior an- nouncements and the Senior gift. They are trying to raise money for a Senior trip, which has been a problem for the last couple of years. So to the class of 1982 we wish you all the luck in your futures. Concert Choir has been very busy this past school year, becoming involved in events such as Vantasia, Christmas pro- grams, plus area wide events and school assemblies. Concert Choir works very hard to raise money to support events. They sold Gold “C” coupon books, and jewelry. The night of Vantasia they organized a spaghetti dinner to help support school funds. Mr. Cofer, the choir director, worked very hard to make Van Horn’s Concert Choir the best choir in our district. He is very proud of our many successes. ORCHESTRA Row 1: Donna Bates. Freddy Barker. Now at their second year at Van Horn, the Youth for Christ Club, has been very busy throughout the entire year. They meet weekly in a home, sing songs, play games, and the meeting is topped off by a special speaker who presents a message that shows each teenager how to live a life with Christ. Afterwards, refreshments are served. Not only do they have weekly meetings but they also spon- sored hayrides, lock-ins, skating parties, and many other activities. The club also has a Bible quiz team who compete against a number of area high schools in a monthly quiz match. This year Sigma has had the chance to extend its winning streak to six, un- dreamed of by the other literary societies here. Ill This summer the Van Horn majorettes attended a camp at UMKC. The camp lasted exactly one week. While there, they met a number of other girls and talked with them and also got to see some of their routines before the competition began. The girls were under a tremendous amount of stress but not too much for our girls. After the competition was over, the girls con- gratulated everyone, not even knowing the results yet. After the results were in, our own girls brought home a first-place trophy for being the best twirlers there. Majorettes Twirl — in first LaTanya Baynam. Did you ever feel like crying but what good would It do? Did you ever look Into her eyes and say a little prayer? Did you ever look Into her heart and wish that you were there? Did you ever whisper God I love her so, but how could I ever let her know, and did you ever wonder where she Is and who she Is with and why? Please don’t fall In love my friend, you'll find It doesn't pay. Although It causes broken hearts, It happens every day. And so I say, don't fall In love, you'll find you’ll be hurt before It's through, and see my friend I ought to know I fell In love with you. Author Unknown Michael Sherman is known for his school spirit here at Van Horn and has shown this as a yell-leader his past two years. Michael will remember his first game as a yell-leader because it was his goal to be one. He believes that our school spirit will hopefully continue to grow. He encourages all the future seniors to study and do your best in all you set out to accomplish. 16 ■ Chins up for roundball! M, Nevels, D. Collins. B. Heinrick. Take this enlarger and SHOVE IT! This year Van Horn has a couple of multi-talented young juniors that have shown us what they can do. These two have been working on this project for quite some time now. This project was performed on the night of Vantasia. They spent numerous hours practicing, writing, taping, and remembering lines. The moment they walked on the stage till the time they left, the crowd went wild. The girls were very proud of themselves. The name of their “Rap” was “Evening Delight.” The characters were Dr. J, Lady C, Sparkle and Candie. This was written by Lady C and Sparkle. This is to both of you, Chanelle and Michelle. Thanks for that terrific job you did. Not pictured: Dr. J, Lady C, Candie. 119 Why bother believing in anything if that doesn’t suit your needs? You think you’ll just run around being the one who won’t bleed. And yet you get hurt so often. Why tune in? Just stay out! You’re never more than a shout from tomorrow anyway. But you just couldn’t fool around forever. The pain was too deep, and the price was too high. So why do they say it’s easier, easier just to lie. We walk around this earth and we never realize that in trying to find our true self our only real hope lies. Like a stranger or a soldier lost on a deserted island, our nature to love lies crying out for recognition! But we never give it a chance. We just work our lives away at jobs we don’t even like. In the name of better pay we’ve sold our birth rights! As children of the Light we can regain such a big price we’ve paid. Come out of the life where money’s been making us slaves. For the real pot of gold lies at the end of the Unseen Rainbow! . 120 Bruce Heinrich had these remarks to say when he was interviewed: He said that he plans to attend college at Arizona, Kansas, or Missouri State preferably. He enjoys all sports, but basketball and water skiing are his favorites. His remarks were: “This is the first year I have seen any school spirit and teamwork, everybody pulling together and working for the same goals that will make this school successful.” He also remarked, “I'm proud to be in the Class of 1982.” STS Marcy James, a smiling face in the halls of Van Horn, plans to take life as it comes; she has no im- mediate plans. Her favorite groups are Journey and Foreigner. Her favorite song is “Leather and Lace.” Her hob- bies include diving and horseback riding. Marcy was a member of the newspaper staff, which she did a super job on the 1981-82 Pioneer. She also was in AFS and was a member of Kappa Lit Society for 2 years. For those who know Marcy, they know that she loves to laugh! Marcy James 124 125 , Terry Jackson had these remarks to say when he was interviewed: “I think Van Horn is a really good school, and I enjoyed working with my fellow classmates, I am also glad that I can take with me from this school a capacity to deal with new ideas and a willingness to work hard, I know that Van Horn will always serve as a critical element in my total education and future success.” Terry Jackson, Sr. Class Pres. ADOPTION Is a union of love not of birth but from higher above. To be united in this way is not a have to it’s I love you and you can stay. When you’re chosen it's great not like any other thing so when given the chance don’t hesitate. Home is the place for your heart when you’ve planted that love remember no one can tear it apart. It's wonderful to know where you belong all the fear and insecurity gone and deep in your soul is a happy song. When for so long, you lived a dream then finally shown reality your face shines with a glowing beam. My parents have given that love to me so strong and free and repayment can never be. Dirk Young had these remarks to say when he was interviewed by one of our staff members: Dirk is hoping to receive a baseball scholarship, but he said he didn’t know for sure. He said, Van Horn is an all right school,” when he was asked what his overall opinion of V.H. was. We asked him what he thought of the girls here at V.H., and his reply was, “A-Hummm. His favorite Rock group is REO Speedwagon and he listens to KY 102. His favorite song is Start Me Up” by the Rolling Stones. His hobbies include riding motorcycles, playing baseball, listening to music, partying, fishing and hunting, and his most favorite, chasing girls. He regards, “Take it easy and I’ll take it any way I can.” He also wishes luck to the baseball team. You want to share my pillow with me? Now that I've found my “longed for” love with a bond that links lives to live eternally in heavens above. It’s this simple: If I never try anything, I never learn anything, If I never take a risk, I stay where I am. F. E. Houser Well-mixed ingredients that are diverse in nature always give rise to EXCELLENCE. In Falcon Country the Students are a mixture of many multiples; they are diverse. The Academics are well-mixed; they are diverse. The Staff is well-mixed professionally; diversity abounds. The Athletic Teams are mixed well with talent; very diverse. Falcon Country is well-mixed; it is super with diversity. Can you claim any of the above? If so, you are EXCELLENT. Leon Turner, Jr. Assistant Principal 161 Principal Griffin To You — The Impressive Graduating Class of 1982, I express my congratulations for your accomplishment. The accomplishments you have reached as a class will set new challenges and goals for the classes who will proceed you. For this you can be proud. The individual accomplishments many of you have achieved will be ones you can always look back on, smile, tell your families about and perhaps say “those were the good ole days.” As I look back at the seven graduating classes before you since my coming to Van Horn, it has always been a delightful pleasure to extend parting words to members of the graduating class. I take no less joy in saluting you, the young women and young men of this fine 1982 class, who have reached this milestone in your high school career. This goal has been reached not without sacrifice, struggle and a sense of achievement. I have personally watched you as members of this class grapple with problems and emerge mentally, socially and morally stronger because of the encounter. I hope each of you will face the problems and successes of life in this same manner. The experiences you have had in the now vanished years as Van Horn will, I trust, establish within each of you a sense of clear directions in prioritizing what will now become new dimensions in your life — life after high school. As you follow your different pursuits, I hope you will have fond memories of days, months, and years spent in the land of the “Red and Gray. I am confident you will reflect credit upon your alma mater as you face the times ahead. I close by emphasizing to each of you, this class of 1982 will be in my memories, that I will forever remember and cherish as one of the greatest classes I have had the pleasure of working with. Their marquee was used on the title page of the '82 Falcon. Once again we would like to express our gratitude and wish them luck here in Independence. Thanks Tuffy! K.C. Opry 10917 Winner Rd. Indep., MO 64052 Phone: 461-2228 This was a tough year for the Falcon. We had to move to the old Graphic Arts room and scrounge furniture to set up shop. I, then had to get all my classes re- arranged so I could have time for yearbook. We had a $2000 debt to pay off. There were numerous snow days that made deadlines hard to meet. But we did it (if we didn’t you wouldn’t be reading this). There are numerous people that the Falcon couldn’t have been possible without: Kim Miller — Thanks for being a super Editor. All the extra time and effort you put into the book shows. Falcon Staff — Thanks for working so hard to meet deadlines. Faculty — Thanks for your support and not getting too upset when I steal people for pictures. Ken Scribner — Our unofficial photographer. Thanks for the after school hours and being flexible. Greg Gaw — PDQ artist. Thanks for the doodles. Also, a belated thanks for the ’81 cover. Mr. Stout, Yearbook Sponsor 187 Sigma Tau — theV.H. Partiers. Drunk again!!
