ADMINISTRATHT Van Horn started out in 1955, bringing you the school of Red and Gray. It started then, it’s here to stay..... L ■ In 1962, the Senior class felt generous enough to donate the V.H. shaped shrub- bery in front of the school.... 5 In 1963, the following year, the Senior class gave us a statue of our Falcon, the school sym- bol ...... storcs 'ACE SCHI Before the Chrisman game, all the Falcon Fans had a big burning of the bear at Van Horn. Everybody decorated their cars with paper mache and red, white, and black crepe paper. Then Mr. Griffin started off the big rivalry by shouting, “Who are we going to beat tonight?”. The crowd answered, “The Bears!”. Mr. Griffin then lit the bear. The crowd cheered. Afterwards, the parade left for Christman, tooting and honking their horns. The fans left with confidence in their minds that the Christman Bears were in trouble with the FALCS!” ■ r i '«ii It’s easy to tell when a game is scheduled for the Falcons. Mr. Van Fleet '■ m I am assigned the responsibilities of disci- pline at Van Horn. It is my duty to work with those students who get into difficulties with their teachers or other students at school. I want most to see each and every student at Van Horn to make the most out of the opportunity for an education. Students should bear in mind that the price to pay for a good education is very little compared with the price to pay for the lack of an education. Though many students may not believe this before their school years are over, life will sooner or later make believers out of all of you. When one speaks or thinks of The Fal- con, it is an utterance or thought of which there is no superlative that can come near or match its performance. To be in the presence of such perfor- mance is like a “dream come true”. She is much better with medicine than students give her credit for. Students come in telling her that they don't feel well and would like to lie down to rest for awhile. With the help of Mrs. McConnell, the students seem miraculously healed, many times by the next hour! 27 Faculty C. Billups I enjoy teaching at Van Horn, Catch me next year. J. Matticks Students and faculty will only be as good as your demands of them. Van Horn can offer an educational opportunity, or total bore- dom depending on the individual student’s insights and expectations. No one owes any- one an education. You must involve your- self in the goals of an education — prepara- tion to reason and adjust in a changing world. J. Van Horn’s baseball team, coached by Mr. Kaifes, did a good job of playing ball this year considering there were several Falcons with injuries (broken wings, fractured beaks, etc ...) which at times, caused the team to be low on players. Next year, let’s have a team physician. There’s nothing that gets Van Horn students more ex- cited and riled up with spirit than a Van Horn baseball game. They’re full of shouts, screams, and even squirt- guns. Want some excitement? Go see our mighty Falcons play ball and cheer them on to victory! mm i 59 Annette Kellis Paula Meade Cindy Norton VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Our girls glided across the floor for their first official warmup before a game. Mrs. Pauk, with a lot of enthusiasm, encouraged the girls to win it! Cindi Norton did some excellent blocking against the opponent. Mr. Cofer, the cast, Concert Choir, stage crew, dancers and the Art Club worked hard to put together one of the most difficult musicals Van Horn has ever performed. The work paid off as the lights dimmed, the curtain raised, and the show started with much anticipation. Filled with electrified excitement, every performance was excellent. In the past 25 years Van Horn has produced many excellent musicals under Mr. Cofcr and hopefully in future years the tradition will go on. u o r m O o o WEST SIDE STORY . . . ..BRIGADOON MUSIC MAN..............THE KING AND O THE SOUND OF MUSIC...........CAROUSEL GUYS AND DOLLS.............THE EMPEROR'S CLOTHES TWENTY FIVE YEARS OF MUSICAL WEST SIDE STORY.........BRIGADOON : r............................................ 1: r MUSIC MAN.................THE KING AND I............ He taught courage supported by a feeling of adventure in leaving the secure environment of the Delano School and coming to the crowded halls of Van Horn High School. Muscular Dystrophy could not stop him. He taught patience accompanied by suffering as he pushed his frail body and tried mind to perform those routine tasks and assignments assigned to other students. Joe, thank you for the lessons you taught us. Thank you for being a pioneer and preparing the way for other wheel chair students. Virginia Norfleet Counselor Those who were closest to Joseph knew what it was like to take Joseph in their arms. Joseph was very active, and he frequently wanted to go places that his wheel-chair would not take him. So he was carried- carried by the members of his family, carried by his school friends, and carried by the members of his scout troop. But none of those who carried Joseph about thought of him as a burden, because it was a pleasure to be with him, and he was an inspiration to everyone. There is much to say about Joe, yet there is not enough. He was the kind of young man that you felt you had known for a lifetime after your first meeting. Joe was a go-getter. He mixed well with other students and teachers and was well- liked. My other regret is not having the honor and pleasure of knowing Joe longer. I will miss him, as I know others will too. David L. Griffin 158 iff mk ■ A m As this year’s graduating Seniors walked across the stage to receive their diplomas, they were minus one person, Tammy Epple. Tammy passed away on February 21, 1980, due to injuries she received in a car wreck on October 26, 1979. Tammy was the type who seemed to touch the hearts of every person with whom she associated. This was because of her pleasing personality, and because of her love for her fellow man. Art was Tammy’s favorite passtime; she would sit for hours at a drawing everything from a dog, to the setting sun. Before the accident Tammy was making plans to attend college and to become a professional artist. Speaking with some of Tammy’s friends and reminiscing on memories of the good times shared, one realizes that al- though Tammy is gone, she will never be forgotten.
