VAN I-HGH SCHOOL Soon after the turn of this century upon seeing the needs of bettereducational facilities for their children, the citizens of Crook District began discussing the possibility of erecting a district high school. In May, 1923 the Crook District Board of Education purchased and obtained a deed to the real estate where Van High School is now located. The land acquired consisted of three acres and cost 35000. 00 In 1924, after a special school bond levy was passed for the erection of a junior high school, the Board of Educa- tion hired an architect to acertain the cost of erecting a four-room, two-story, brick building. In June, 1924 work was begun on the above mentioned structure which cost approximately 317, 000. 00: consequently, the building was ready for occupancy for the school year 1926-27, and Mr. John Tanner was appointed principal. Mr. W. E. Doss delivered the Graduation Address to the first Ninth Grade Class which graduated May 21, 1927, and the succeeding years brought about the addition of the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. When the County Unit System went into effect the name of the school was changed to Van High School. The first four year graduating class, school year 1929-30, is pictured above. The faculty for that year con- sisted of John E. Wolfe, Principal: Lucille Fleger, L. O. Haynes, Wanda Kennedy, Alice Lewis and Melvin Roberts. Much of the above information was furnished by Mr. B. C. Dickens, Mr. W. E. Doss and Mr. P. H. Dickens. The Staff thanks these persons and apologizes for any errors it might have made in recording the above data. ' Elisiurg nf Burma Glnunig Boone County was formed in 1847 from parts of Logan, Cabell, and Kanawha counties. It was named after the famous woodsman and hunter, Daniel Boone. The County has an area of 506 square miles. It was in Boone County that West Virginia's vast coal reserves were discovered more than 200 years ago. Coal mining has now taken the place of timbering, with the natural gas industry second to coal. There is also considerable interest in agriculture in the county. 55 fhminr f:L , Kenneth Bailey, Robert H. Bennett, Garnet Lou Bonds, Dara Bradley, Betty Brock, Betty Burns. Whnrriining Gad fjfib W DZ -ff A 51112 Qlardinal The Cardinal was designated the state bird by a legislative committee of five on June 18, 1949. The Cardinal belongs to the Finch family. It is a Grosbeak, meaning great beak. It was named Cardinal for its color. The Cardinal doesn't migrate in the winter time. They are to be found all over the southern half of the United States. The Cardinal is a song bird with a melody almost like the nightingale and is protected by law, as it is against West Virginia laws to kill song birds. It was chosen as the official bird to represent our state. 65 4 . 'ZS Q 4 ..r ' xfCf'2 2-.
