VANUIEN EENTRALSEHDUL I M7 1 1 i 5 1 HUHH HIHTER To crimson some their voices raise and some sing for the blue, To purple many tip their hats and brown is toasted too. To none of these our hearts are bound, for none of these we fight We love to cheer the dear old Red and White. Come sing to fair Van Etteng Come raise your voices high. Sing loud and laud her praisesg Her rivals bold defy. Dearest Old Alma Mater, thine would we ever be. Come sing a song to Van Etten, oh here's to Thee. 2 DEDICHTIUH MR. WILLIS PHELPS AN ODE TO OUR ADVISOR Through the year you have guided us, The class of '47 From the time we entered as hopeless seniors, 'Till we leave forever more. You arranged our courses and schedules, Helped with our dances and plays, Signed excuses by the hundreds, Guided us in thousands of ways. So now we, the Class, in tribute Dedicate this book to you, For your unfailing assistance In helping to see us through. We can never really thank you For the kindness you have shown, For the guiding hand you gave us In making V. C. S. our home. 3 HDHIIHISTRHTIUH Mrs. Pauline G. Bush, District Superintendent of Schools of the First Supervi- sory District of Chemung County and her secretary, Miss Louise McAtee, at Mrs Bush's right, are shown processing some of the many reports handled by her of- fice. This supervisory office has direct supervision over forty-four school dis- tricts in the towns of Catlin, Erin, Horseheads, Van Etten, and Veteran. BUHHD UF EDUCHTIUH Seated: left to right - Edwin Kesselring, Harry E. Gough, President, Mrs. Aili Lampila, Charles C. Ring, Clerk, Harry Grover, Edward Kline, Hicks B. Dow, Principal. 4 PHIHCIPHL PRINCIPAL, MR. HICKS B. DOW To the Class of 1947: The Class of '47 numbers seventeen members, each one a different and distinct individual. Each has his or her own particular abilities, interests, skills, goals and attitudes. All of these attributes are, of necessity very important, but of them the last two will play a major role in the decades ahead in determining the lcind and calibre of citizens we aspire to be. Let us hold forth as one goal a happy, fruitful life, a life we are willing to spend in the ser- vice and betterment of others. There is no more certain way to happiness. Let us 'polish' our objectives with wholesome attitudes, attitudes that will lead us to appre- ciate the will and rights of others--that will cause us to take the big and not the petty view- -that will magnify ourselves to the point where we will always champion the right at any cost--that will mark us for our humility, patience, tolerance and sympathy. These are the forces and fac- tors that will point to the sunrise for which a weary world is waiting. Take your steadfast places as part of this great movement. And now farewell, and happi- ness and success. May God bless each one of you. ' Sincerely yours, 60Tuff HICKS B. JAMES WESTBROOK Sophomore-Junior, Ithaca High School Varsity Basketball Varsity Baseball Varsity Football Male Chorus Student Council Orchestra Varsity Club TORCH Assistant In the spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love. V 14 CLHSS HISTUHU n 1944 our class started to climb Graduation Mountain. There were twenty-eight of us -- thirteen girls and fifteen boys. They included the following: Jane Anderson, Marjorie Niemi, Irene Anderson, Alice Britenbaker, Esther Gallow, Thelma Arnold, Dorothea Webster, Betty Ko0P, Doris Aho, Helen Simcoe, Francine Stern, Aune Niemi, Betty Stringham, Francis Ackley, Fay Van Skiver, Jr., Franklin Rotter, Olin Arnold, Theodore Macafee, Frank Austin, Willard Anderson, Jr., Judson Poole, Howard Stevens, James Whipple, David Jayne, Donald Armstrong, Donald Strope, Glen Smith, and Leon Hollen- beck, Jr. During the year Donald Armstrong left school. 1945 found us with twenty-one in our Sophomore year. Those who did not return were: Betty Stringham, Olin Arnold, Frank Austin, Willard Anderson, Jr., Franklin Rotter, Judson Poole, Howard Stevens, David Jayne, Donald Strope, and Glen Smith. We did, however, gain Robert Schutt, Richard Zobel, Holker Haukinen, and Gerald Groves. The Sophomore troupe was now half way up the moun- tains. We were getting anxious to see the peak, but it was still out of sight. In the following year of 1946, our class was decreased again. Now there was a total of fourteen-- eleven girls and three boys. The following did not return to school: Theodore Macafee, Fay Van Ski- ver, Jr., Francis Ackley, Francine Stern, and Betty Koop. Richard Zobel and Gerald Groves advan- ced to 'the class above us. During the year Meribah Drake, Bonnie Beverly, and John Bender joined our class. Now we could see Graduation Peak. To begin earning money for our Senior trip, we spon- sored a bake sale in the spring, which netted us S13.00. We were allowed the privilege of having a Junior Prom, the first one to be held in the V. C. S. The year of 1947 finds us now at Graduation Peak, with seventeen in our class. We gained four new Seniors: James Westbrook, Sherman Moreland, Richard Laitinen a.nd Eini Aura. But we lost James Whipple and,John Bender. To earn money for the class trip, we sponsored movies, dances and amateur show, two plays, sold cards and magazines. Our reward for climbing the mountain to Grad- uation Peak was a trip to Washington, D. C., where every one saw our beautiful capital. We wish to pay honor to those of our class who served in the Armed Forces by publishing their names. They were: David Jayne, Theodore Macafee, Glen Smith, Willard Anderson, Jr., Olin Arnold, Judson Poole, Fay Van Skiver, Jr., Donald Strope, and Richard Anderson. 1947 -----WASHINGTON -----MAGAZINE SALES - ----- Let 'Er Go Gallagher Mama's Baby Boy ------DANCES ------AMATEUR SHOW UANE AND CARLJ -- --Movms 1946 - -- -- -JUNIOR PROM - -- -BAKE SALE 1945 1944 G'rnJua'I'i.-1 Mun-l'l niu 15 e, the Senior Class of the Van Etten Central School, Van Etten, New York, being of sommd and disposing mind, memory and understanding twe hopel do hereby make, publish, and declare this to be our Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all other wills by us heretofore made: I, Alice Britenbaker, leave my honor CAAAJ marks to Elsie Winqvist.
