1970 Hornet 2. Van-Cove High School Cove, Arkansas Volume 16 Co-Editors: Maureen Watkins Andy Milburn Advisor: Mrs. Joyce White Foreword As we live on from day to day, And watch the sunsets fade away, And see the stars come out at night, We wonder. We think of all that we have done, The places seen, the races won, The lessons learned, the tables turned, And we perceive. There is an ember burning low Within each heart that wants its glow, And from this quiet flame is shed A light. The light is love and as it grows Its flame consumes our hearts, and shows Throughout our minds and eyes and souls A spirit. This spirit makes the world go round, For friendship, faith, and hope abound Within the circle of its warmth And we are happy. Its sunlit golden gleams would spill Around about us and instill An encompassing essence of Good will. Then those of us who have a spark Must make our spirits burn the dark And grow to circle all of man Together. 2 - Carol Bruzdziak Table Of Contents Dedication.......................................... 4 Superintendent's Message and Secretary.................5 Board Of Education ....................................6 Faculty .............................................. 7 Personnel .......................................... 12 Graduates ............................................13 Undergrads ......................................... 19 Governor's Address................................... 34 Favorites ............................................35 Activities ...........................................45 Athletics ........................................... 57 Homecoming Games .................................... 64 Homecoming .......................................... 66 Basketball Scores Through County Tournament .... 68 Advertising ..........................................69 Snapshots ............................................96 Editor's Message......................................98 3 Dedication of The '70 Hornet Though his years with us have been few, his contributions to Van-Cove have been many. He has endeavored to help us realize the importance of school functions and at the same time has had a pa- tient, understanding attitude with all of us. His ability to cope with difficulties confronting him inspires our respect, admiration, and affection. It is with pleasure that we, the Senior Class of 1970, dedicate 4 this annual to Mr. Alan DeRamus. Superintendent’s Message The path we travel in life is narrow and long, filled with many dangers. America's future will be determined by you, her future leaders. The task before you is great so take your po- sition in life seriously. If I might leave one last thought with you Seniors of 1970 it would be this: Exercise a little more patience, a little more charity for all, a little more devotion, a little more love with less bowing down to the past, but looking forward to the future, with more confidence in yourself and more faith in your fellow man, then your life will be re- warding and your country great. L. O. Hagler Office Secretary Mrs. Smith has been with us at Van-Cove for the past four years. We have all grown accustomed to seeing her working diligently in the office, either on official business for Mr. Hagler or doing an errand for one of the students. Mrs. Smith is given little credit for her efforts, but she is a vital function to the school system. 5 Board Of Education Standing L. to R. Buck Cureton, Dale Watkins, Superintendent L. O. Hagler, Bill Walker, Seated L. to R. M. A. George, Eugene Stevenson, Dolan Daniel The local school board serves the fundamental purpose of carrying out the provisions of the legislative statutes and the regulations of the state board of education as these relate to the Van-Cove school district. Board members are also concerned with the parents' interest in school functions. It is with pride that we acknowledge our school board members. A |fiDej Mt. This is an initial step, but by no means their last. It is step into a world of greater responsibilities and with this step they ven- ture into a world with a bright, promising future ahead. Names may fade and diminish with the passage of time- but personal deeds and endeavors of Van-Cove students will live forever. 18 Undergrads Juniors Cloma Bailey Kenny Barton Rhonda Daniels Keith Dean Roy Dees Gary Dutton Wayne Gross Johnnie James Jackie Jewell Dorothy Meredith Glenda Milam Jerry Rhodes Phyllis Stinson Rose Toon Sharon Towry Denny Vanderbilt Junior Play Hectic But Fun 20 CLASS OFFICERS Top Row L. to R. Pictured here - Mrs. Joyce White, Maureen Watkins and Andy Milburn, going over some of the badly burned copy re- ceived back from Walsworth Publishing Company. Some- thing good did come out of this accident-we were able to correct a couple of mistakes that were sent in with the original shipment. Annual Copy burns up in Plane Crash... On Friday Feb. 13th the annual Staff mailed their final copy for the 1969-70 Hornet to the Walsworth Pub. company. The following Monday Van Cove was notified that their copy was on a plane from Little Rock to Kansas City, Mo. that burned. Another strange point was that out of all the books published in Southern Ark. by this company only two with the last name of Cove that being Van Cove and Magnet Cove burned. Don't ever mail anything on Friday 13th! '70 Hornet Staff L. to R. Glenda Barrett, Advertising; Larry Webb, Business Manager; Maureen Watkins, Editor; Andy Milbum, Co- Editor; Marcy Liner, Subscriptions; Bobby Smedley, Photographer; Mrs. White, Advisor The Hornet Staff has finished its work for the year. I would like to say thanks to the co- editor for helping me work so hard to meet all the deadlines. A special thanks goes to our ad- visor for always being on hand to help when we needed her. The production of a good yearbook lies not totally on the shoulders of the editors or staff, but lies with everyone directly or in- directly associated with the school. In the days ahead, you may sometimes ask yourself, What do I have to show for my life? Have I wasted all these years? Only a life without memories is wasted. This yearbook is to bring back those memories. Each time you glance through it you will remember the times with friends, some of whom you have almost forgotten. If this yearbook brings back just one fond memory when you thumb through these pages, we feel we have accomplished much. Maureen Watkins Editor 98 m WALSWORTH MircrliM. Mo . I S A
