POINTER BAND LOSES 13 1977-78 flag corps gets worm welcome 1?,., x 8 : I , 4 Ol fxfxljl Leland Barclay John Harris Lisa Heiss Richard Kimberly Lance Kordis Enjoyment 26 The Pointer band also showed their pride by represent- ing Van Buren in all but two games of the regular season and all but one play-off game. For half-time shows, they started practicing in mid-August. Van Buren once again attended two marching contests. The first was the Russellville halftime-show contest. They received a superior rating, the first step toward the coveted Sweepstakes Award, given to bands that make a first division in all region sponsored contests. The Camden Invitation Contest was nextg the band responded with another superior rating against much stiffer competition. This was the first year for the new show band type drill incorporated by band director Ron Brammer. This show featured percussionists and the new flag corps. The flag corps was another first for the Van Buren High School Band. Mr. Steve Workman, the new assistant director, was in charge of organizing and choosing the corps. It consisted of eight band members. He also patterned the flag drills to fit the band drills. Mr. Workman in cooperation with Mrs. Linda Gant, librarian, purchased films to help with next years drills. Eight girls were chosen as majorettes with Charles Curry leading as drum major. These nine band members carried the responsibility of leading the band, and a lot of ' ls... , Band Queen Court for 1977 are, left to right, Carolyn Parks, Debbie Swopes, Queen Lisa Heiss, Jeannie Rimmer, Cheryl Johnson, Elizabeth McFadden, all seniors. extra practice was put in to assure them of success. After marching season, students began working on All Region material. ln 1977-78 Van Buren had 49 try with 46 making All-Region Band. Of these, 15 qualified to try out for All-State Band with 12 t successful. , The Van Buren High School Pointer Band in the years has brought back many illustrious awards. This true once again in 1977-78. The band received an added honor in 1977-78 receiving best in class at the Six Flags over Georgia test last May. They were invited to perform at the twf second annual Southern Instrumental Conductors Col ence at the University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg, Miss. Van Buren, one of six bands chosen l the midwest and southern states to perform a 45-mi concert, was the only one from Arkansas. The week before leaving for Mississippi the band gave preview performance for the public in the senior high 4 The following Wednesday the band left for Hattiesbur play on Feb. 10 for interested junior high, senior high college students and 500 instrumental music teachers.
