National Honor Society, bigger, better than ever The National Honor Society is a group of students of high scholastic achievement. The some 64 members are urged to maintain a 3.0 grade point during their induction time to the termination of their high school years. A requirement for the honor society, other than a high grade point is attendance at Van Buren High for at least one semester. Further eligibility is considered on their service, leadership, and character. National Honor Society was formed in 1919. The Van Buren chapter was chartered in 1933, and has remained active ever since. President Cheryl Batchlor, along with other officers: vice-president, Linda Robinson, secretary, Cindy Lovelady and treasurer, Denise Gramlich, lead the group with enthusiasm and encouragement. Sponsor Mrs. Emma Posey, also study hall advisor, aids them during the spring and fall inductions, A reception is held for the parents of the honored students preceding each induction. Other than the inductions, the club funds a scholarship, helped by a paper product drive for the Zion Foster Home. A Christmas Ballard. Scott Graves grades papers for Miss Mary Maude Gallaghers Spanish classes. Students aid teachers, administration by skills Office workers and teachers aides play a big role as they aide the administration and faculty with their spare hours of their eight-hour day at Van Buren High School. Busy, busy, busy seems to echo through the air as the eight o'clock bell rings. Office workers relaying messages for excused absences while Mrs. Ann Telaar and Mr. James Flenor rush to sign tardy and absentee slips. Selling supplies to those last minute minds is also a duty for office workers. Meanwhile, Mr. Walter Rockwell's aides stock the concession stand and deliver personal messages to students. But there is not all hard work to this elective as started this year a new annual event, the counselors workers gave a Christmas feast in Mr. Rockwell's and Mrs. Webb's office. Being a teachers aide or an office worker also gives the students, teachers, counselors, and administration the opportunity to get to know one another further than just a student-teacher, classroom relation.
