THE DIXIE at THE TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT Our transportation dates back to the fall of 1917 when present school system was lnaugurated The equlpment at this tlme COUSI ted of a number of horse drawn buses Puplls llvlng along the electrlc railway were provided wlth transportation by this means during the flrst year, through an agreement Wlth the rallway management we are operatlng SIX motor drlven buses three of whlch have a carrying capacity of approxlmately 40 pupils and WhlCh are qulte modern f01 thls type of vehicle It IS the alm of the department, and we feel the wlsh of a majority of the patrons, to provlde as soon as possible enough buses to adequately care for all puplls transported without the necesslty of havlng two dlsmlssals IS IN thc c lse at present Thls would ellmlnate to a large extent the present practlce of buses maklng long runs wlthout passengers, be Sld6E making for better condltlons ln the school The average number of puplls transported during the school vear 1929 30 was approximately 360 One of the alms of the transportation department ls to furnish safe reliable transportation as cheaply as posslble Durlng the preceeding year the cost per pupll per dav was elght cents Thls 18 the lowest figure attalned for any slngle year to date Durlng recent months a number of measures have been adopted to help lnsure safe transportation of school pupils The state department of motor vehicles sent an In Spector to every school ln the state uslng transportatlon to check the equlpment All school bus drivers are now required to be licensed Chauffers A mental and physical examination IS necessary to secure this llcensc The speed of all school buses IS now llmlted to 25 mlles per hour In addltlon buses are lequlred to be equlpped Wlth sev eral pl6C6S of equlpment WhlCh lend addltlonal safety to thelr operatloll We feel Justl flably proud ln being able to state th It both our equlpment and pelsonell have satls factorlly met the requirements of the state At the present tlme the personell conslst of QIX drivers and two substltutes as follows H W Trout Boyd Huston Cllude Huntlev Dona Foust James Goodman and Ross Moorehead Substitute drivers are Reubcn Buckland and Orlole Elder Durlng the last year George Connell, one of our oldest and most faithful drivers reslgned HIS place was taken by Mr Huntley It IS the desire and the obJectlve of the Transportation Department to contlnue to furnish safe reliable, courteous and economical SQTVICG ROSS MOORHEAD l19o0, lllllllllllllIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIlllllllllllllllllllllllllllHIIIIIIIlllllIIIIllllllllllllllllllllll llIIIUIIIllllllllllllllllllllKllllllllllllllllllllllIIIllllllllIllllllllllIllllllllllllllllllll i . i h.
