fHE 1 RANSPORYAIION DEPARTMENT In conslderlng a centrallzed school system, the matter of transportatlon IS one of the prlme essentlals In the fall of 1917 when our present school was lnaugurated, the equlpment con slsted of several horse drawn buses some puplls l1v1ng along the DIXIE hlghway were transported on the electrle rallway through an agreement wlth the management The followlng year transportatlon for these puplls was provxded by a Ford bus purchased by the Board of Educatlon for the purpose Thls was the first motorlzed un1t ln our school owned transportatxon department In 1919 the area covered by thls bus was somewhat extended The use of the horse drawn vehlcles was continued th1s year, but they were supplanted at tlmes by passenger automoblles owned by the drlvers the latter preferrlng them to the slow movlng wagons Durlng the summer of 1920, four Fords and two Internatlonal buses were purchas- ed These unlts together w1th the orlglnally Ford bus gave us a completely motorlzed transportatlon department and efected a great lmprovement IH convenlence and comfort to say nothlng of the tlme saved 1n transportlng the puplls To house and care for th1s equlpment the Board constructed a garage and repalr shop on the school grounds These seven buses were employed w1thout addxtlon or change untll the fall of 1926, when a large bus mounted on a Reo chassls was purchased Th1s was the first really large un1t to be acqulred by the Department It accomodated some forty puplls When thls bus went 1HtO servxce 1n November of that year, the orlglnal Ford bus was placed ln reserve Two years later, 1928 two more large buses mounted on Internatlon al chasses were secured these replaced the other three Fords Wlth the acqulsltlon of the three large buses we are a step nearer to one of our ldeals, a slngle dlsmlssal At present and for some years we have been compelled to have two dxsmlssals due to the fact that our equlpment could not accommodate all of the pupxls at one tlme However we eventually expect to overcome this objectlon ln the near future, and feel that lts accompllshment wlll be welcomed by patrons, puplls, and teachers allke The ObJ6Ct1V9 of the Transportatlon Department IS safe rellable, courteous and eco nomlcal servlce To th1s end we strlve and dedlcate our best efforts ROSS MOOREHEAD Pnnczpul of Tmnspoltatzou fPage 101 V.- , 4 .
