Text from Pages 1 - 164 of the 1985 volume:

“Zke 1984-85 Paw” 2 Throughout the years we've never let each other down, we turned our lives around. The sweetest days we found, we found together. Throughout the years, we've never been afraid we've loved the lives we made and we're so glad we stayed, right here together, throughout the years. ZMKOUQMOUZ ZMS vsaks 3 4 The football season of 1984-85 was filled with a lot of fun. All of the organizations had a great time supporting the football team. The fans, cheerleaders, and drill team all held a very important part in the games. The band this year was also a big influence to the team, games, and fans. Within all the fun, we had fabulous pep rallies, which were held before lunch on Fridays. The entire school was full of spirit after the rallies!! ' The pep rallies this year consisted of many activities such as: cheers, skits, routines, school songs, speeches, and the list goes on and on. One of the most outstanding parts of the rallies were the class battle cries. We had a lot of competition between classes not only with yelling, but also decorating. This year the senior should be congratulated. They were very supportive of the team and everyone. At the end of the year, the cheerleaders chose a class who yelled the most, helped decorate, and much more. This year the winners were — the SENIORS!! We want to thank everyone for their work this year. Band, Drill Team, Cheerleaders, and fans you were great! But most of all we want you to know — WE LOVE YOU BIG BLUE! . zwjmjcszoss js Van Alstyne dances were really moving this year. We had quite a few of them! Among some were the Homecoming, Victory, Valentine, and end of school dances. The Homecoming dance music was supplied by a hired DJ from Oklahoma. But the other three dances had music from our own school's DJs. It is always nice to have them back. The picture at the right shows our wonderful DJs! The Victory dance was held in honor of our great football team for their accomplishments this year. The Valentine's dance was semi-formal and a good time to be with your sweetheart!! The Student Council sponsored all of the dances and provided refreshments. Who knows, Van Alstyne may have a Fred Astaire someday! The classes this year were full of excitement. The cheerleaders sponsored dress-up days, and the students had a blast! Some of the dress-up days were: Tie Day, 50's Day, Western Day, Punk Prep Day, Hat Day, Sunglasses Day, Blue and White Day, and Twin Day. We had a lot of student participation, which made the days very fun. The teachers did the judging this year. The punk prep day results are on the opposite page. We had two other winners whose pictures were not available They were: Missy Pittman (Ronald McDonald), and Lisa Thomas (Tweety Bird)-Most Original. On Hat Day, the teachers chose Justin Buckner's hat to top off all the rest. Way to go Everyone!! WHO AKS we ZOO A V?! Most Contemporary — Kevin Day Most Authentic — Stephanie Cook Craziest Punk — Shari Stewart Scariest — Pam Huff Most Unusual — Jody Wesson Cutest Punk — Amy Noe Most Preppy — Andy Arterbury The talent show this year was at Christmas. We had a lot of student participation. Skits, class songs, senior songs, solos, and guitar playing were a few of the activities. This year, we were privi-ledged to have the latest dance performed — breakdancing. And as always, our own country western singer sang. Thanks everyone for your participation. We enjoyed the show! The home and family wedding was held at the Van Alstyne High School library. The wedding was performed as a double wedding. Brides were Stephanie Cook and Amy Guinn. Their bridesmaids were Tracy B., Misty H., Leigh M., Tammy W., and Jody W. The grooms were Ronny Hurst and Eric Salmon. Their groomsmen were Harold G., Andre B.,Jeff Spencer., Michael M., and Jason S. Wedding music was presented by Lisa Thomas and Debbie Moody. 13 AW ZHS WJVfflK JS ... This years Fall Festival was great! All the classes worked very hard; but, like anything else there can be only one winner, and this year the winner is the Senior Class. The Junior Class is second, followed by the Sophomores, and last, is the Freshmen. The representatives from each class were: King and Queen of the Senior Class were Clay Tate and Laurie Ruiz. Prince and Princess of the Junior Class were Doug Flanery and Debra Holland. Prince and Princess of the Sophomore Class were Jay Cooper and Marla Wise, and Prince and Princess of the Freshman Class were Jared Sprowl and Lenore McKinney. The Heralds this year were Andy Arterbury and Justin Buckner. The Crown bearers were Miles Martin and Buffy Bing. Fall Festival-rain, they go together, but not his year. We had nice weather and a wonderful festival. From the Junior Jam boree to the Senior Spookride, all the way to the Kindergarten Wishing Well, everything was a big success. Among other things, the annual Turkey Dinner was really enjoyed. The Junior Jamboree must be commended though! They were wonderful, (maybe hopes for Nashville someday!) All of the cake walks, pies, and hamburgers really livened up the place! That must have been what brought everyone to town. One of the most enjoyed activities of the night was the dunking booth. All of the guys, (and gals, too) got a shot at the coaches who made them work extra hard, run extra laps, shoot extra balls, or in general, do their job! For all your punishment coach, we got you back! Over all, the Festival was a great success. Thanks to everyone for all your help. This year's homecoming activities were very special A car decorating contest was sponsored by the cheerleaders and the winner was Jay Lightfoot. The annual bonfire and pep rally was canceled this year due to rain. The rain may have dampened the wood, but school spirit was alive and everyone was ready for the game between these two rival towns. The cheerleaders had 600 balloons, blue and white, that were released by the fans at various times during the game! The student body elected four candidates for queen. They were Seniors Melanie Hynds, Kim Lof-tice, Laurie Ruiz, and Greta Myers. These young ladies were escorted onto the field by their fathers Mike Hynds, Alfred Loftice, Tony Ruiz, and Grandfather, Weston McCoy. The students of VAHS chose Melanie Hynds as the 1984-85 Homecoming Queen. DeVera Lynch, the 1983-84 Homecoming Queen, crowned her successor. The Queen was presented a crown and a bouquet of red roses. The other candidates all received a single red rose. After the crowning, the Queen and her court were driven around the field by Eric Salmon in his 1969 convertible Camaro. Over all, the 1984 homecoming was a great night despite our defeat by the Anna Coyotes. The final score was 13-14. The homecoming dance was held immediately following the game at the high school student center. This dance was sponsored by the student council. The music was presented by Sound and Light Unlimited. It consisted of many songs to dance by and the music videos to watch. It was a great dance! 18 MK- A MJSS V.A.M.S. I needed time to do some serious thinking. I had an important game to go to. I had to attend my group therapy session I had to demonstrate the latest dance step. Aren't these legitimate excuses.-1 It seems so to students, though some teachers might disagree. After all, it's hard to keep your priorities straight when you are young. 34 HOMSWOKK Homework, that dreaded word. Does it really establish good study habits and build self-discipline, or is it just a punishment given by teachers when their classes misbehave; And should it be called home” work or student-center work? Most students work hurriedly of a morning before classes to finish an assignment which they meant to do at home the night before, or students snatch minutes here and there through the day in order to complete their home work. After all, the prime time hours at night have to be saved for the important things in life such as: hour-long phone calls, favorite T.V. shows, and cruising the town. Whatever homework is, it is a reality of school life. 36 37 Zaking Zests Testing is becoming more and more a part of the high school life. The number of test that a student takes in one year is mind-boggling. There are achievement tests, LBAS tests, six weeks tests, semester finals, the SAT, and even a PSAT. The list goes on and on. Different tests take different amounts of preparation time. Sometimes hours are spent memorizing several pages of notes or reading one or two chapters of a text, and then sometimes glancing over a few examples is enough to prepare for an exam. Though testing is far from being a student's favorite part of high school, it is a major part. 39 ■ 9 40 SPOK ZS W-DJSZKJCZ CM A Ml’S ALL-DISTRICT FIRST TEAM Offense Q-D. Bengtson B-P. Hickson R-C. Meanwhile, the 8th grade was overpowering every team they played. They set a goal for the team at the beginning of the season which was to win district. Midway through the season they set another goal which was not to be scored on. They accomplished both of these goals. They outscored their opponents 306-0 and became the District Champs with a record of 8-0. 47 The varsity boys had a successful season this year. Class members worked most of the year on planning the Junior-Senior Prom. They sold magazines and worked at the Fall Festival to finance the banquet, and many hours were spent at prom committee meetings in order to make the night a complete success. In the month of March, juniors received their class rings. The rings reminded many students of the upcoming year and the excitement that it would hold. It was a fantastic year for the junior class. Future plans were made, good times were enjoyed, and the best was expected for the following year. Many memories will be of the times shared between friends as old friendships became stronger, and new ones began to grow. The sophomore year is not the most exciting of school, but it is the year that a student can slow down and think about the direction he wants to go as he continues on. New friends, new classes, and new experiences have all contributed to many good times and great memories. Freshmen students had the opportunity to take part in the home economic and agriculture departments at the high school and to also join several other organizations such as: the Speech and Drama Department, Band. Student Council, and the Spanish Club. The freshman year of a high school student is always exciting. It is a turning point in their life as well as a new beginning. 95 Michael Corbett Diana Coyle Michael Crawford Melinda Denton Shannon Dhane Glenn Doggett Michelle Domingos Shannon Exley Angelina Flatt Cindy Hammons Laura Harrison Darrell Huddleston Chad Huffines Stephen Key Tim Lamson Jana Lightfoot Jennifer Likely Vance Linkswiler Lenore McKinney Dawn McMahan Ray McMorris Michael Moody Steven Moore % Karen Morris Amy Noe Kathy O'Cain Michael O’Toole Penny Payne Chris Phelan Robert Philbrick Shelly Phillips Pam Pittman Jodi Rcnne Keith Simco Debbie Sims Ray Sims Laura Sloan David Small Stephanie Smith Jared Sprowl Daniel Stanley Latricia Stephens Amy Troxtell Jason Vensel Amy Windham Clifton Wright Charles Wygal ••'%«f •V, ... .. -v vV; ;v .
