ACTIVITIES OF THE SENIOR CLASS On September 10, 1945, we began our high school education under the sponsorship of Miss Elaine Witt and Mrs. Edith Knape. We did not take a very big part in the activities, as Freshmen usually take a back seat. In our Sophomore year we began to take an active part in the school activities. Many of the members of our class began to take sports and extra-curricular activities more seriously. Even though we were still “little fellows,” we were feeling our responsibility, and we were trying to take our place. Our Junior year was the biggest year up to that time. This was the year some of our boys helped to win the Football District Championship for Van Alstyne High School, and we were privileged to have the coach, Mr. Hyman, as our sponsor. We had a “Variety Show” that year to raise money for the Junior-Senior Banquet. That was the first “Variety Show” we had had in Van Alstyne for a long time. I might add that it was quite successful. Now, the biggest year of our lives is at hand. This is the year for which we have been waiting for many years. At last it is our long-awaited “Senior Year”. Although we did not win Football District Championship, we had a football team to be proud of. We also had a very successful girls and boys’ basketball team. We are looking forward to Senior Day, the Senior play, and the Junior-Senior Banquet. At the first of the year Bergie Stuteville was elected president; Bobby Redden, vice-president; Betty Walker, secretary; Loraine Gray, treasurer; and Betty Avery, reporter. Our class colors are red and white; our class flower is the red rose; and our class song is “Follow the Gleam”. We will long remember this year, for it has been a memorable one. Seniors of 49 wish to thank the teachers who have been so patient, kind, and understanding with us these twelve years. We will long remember their efforts to make us what we sould be. The Senior Class says, “Hats off to the ones who have made our graduation possible.” 11
