Text from Pages 1 - 80 of the 1949 volume:

FOREWORD THE PANTHER OF 1949 is presented as a continuation of the policy established by its predecessor, THE PANTHER of 1948. This policy as stated, and which met with so much success last year, is that high school boys and girls enjoy their high school years, and desire and appreciate a medium which will enable them to better remember the events and activities, both curricular and extra-curricular, of those pleasant years. Pictures are a universal language, one of which a reader never tires, and again we have endeavored to include at least some sort of picture of every individual connected in any way with our school system. If this Annual is larger, more inclusive, and of a better quality than last year’s Annual (and we sincerely hope it will be) you may give the credit to the experience we gained with last year’s edition and to the hours of work and planning put into it, as well as to the fine co-operation given us by all who were asked to help us by supplying us with pictures. We sincerely thank those who helped us in any way, and repeat as of last year that we hope you can say “not bad’ after you have examined your copy of this publication. THE STAFF GYMNASIUM-AUDITORIUM LUNCHROOM MAIN BUILDING VAN ALSTYNE HIGH SCHOOL 2 FOOTBALL STADIUM BASEBALL PARK HOWARD L. HARTLEY THE PANTHER of 1949 is reverently dedicated to the memory of HOWARD L. HARTLEY, member of the Board of Education of Van Alstyne High School at the time of his death December 28, 1948, and to the following men who are members of the School Board at the present time: Mr. J. O. Sterling, President, Mr. A. A. Edwards, Vice-President, Mr. W. W. Blassingame, Secretary, Mr. J. G. Kitching, Dr. F. M. Sporer, Mr. Glen Jaco, and Mr. Stone Marshall, Jr. We consider it a privilege to be able to express in this small way our appreciation for Mr. Hartley and this group of public spirited men who have done so much to be of service to us. We did not take a very big part in the activities, as Freshmen usually take a back seat. In our Sophomore year we began to take an active part in the school activities. Many of the members of our class began to take sports and extra-curricular activities more seriously. Even though we were still “little fellows,” we were feeling our responsibility, and we were trying to take our place. Our Junior year was the biggest year up to that time. This was the year some of our boys helped to win the Football District Championship for Van Alstyne High School, and we were privileged to have the coach, Mr. Hyman, as our sponsor. We had a “Variety Show” that year to raise money for the Junior-Senior Banquet. That was the first “Variety Show” we had had in Van Alstyne for a long time. I might add that it was quite successful. Now, the biggest year of our lives is at hand. This is the year for which we have been waiting for many years. At last it is our long-awaited “Senior Year”. Although we did not win Football District Championship, we had a football team to be proud of. We also had a very successful girls and boys’ basketball team. We are looking forward to Senior Day, the Senior play, and the Junior-Senior Banquet. At the first of the year Bergie Stuteville was elected president; Bobby Redden, vice-president; Betty Walker, secretary; Loraine Gray, treasurer; and Betty Avery, reporter. Our class colors are red and white; our class flower is the red rose; and our class song is “Follow the Gleam”. We will long remember this year, for it has been a memorable one. Seniors of 49 wish to thank the teachers who have been so patient, kind, and understanding with us these twelve years. We will long remember their efforts to make us what we sould be. The Senior Class says, “Hats off to the ones who have made our graduation possible.” 11 BILLIE NELL SHEARIN Pep Squad 46-47-48-49 Drum Corps 48 Halloween Princess 48 Cheerleader 46-47 Most Likely to Succeed 48-49 Annual Staff 49 ROY ADAMS Most Handsome Boy 49 F.F.A. 49 Softball 48 BOBBY REDDEN F ootball 47-48-49 Basketball 47-48 Secretary of Class 48 Vice-President 49 Baseball 49 Annual Staff 49 Softball 48 Most Popular Boy 48 Best All-Around 49 DELORES BUSH Majorette 46-47-48 Head-Majorette 49 Football Queen 49 Most Beautiful Girl 48-49 Annual Staff 49 Homemaking Club 49 LORAINE GRAY Pep Squad 46-47-48-49 Cheerleader Basketball Softball Most Popular Treasurer Usher Annual Staff 48 46-47 46-47-48 48-49 49 48 49 EUGENE JUSTICE Football 47-49 Basketball 46-47-48-49 Baseball 49 Most Popular 49 Annual Staff GRADYLENE SMITH Pep Squad 47-48-49 Majorette Basketball Softball Secretary 49 46-47-48-49 47 46 TRAVIS MULLENIX Football 45-46 Basketball 45-46 Softball 45 U. Majorettes were as follows: Bobbie Bledsoe, head majorette; Mildred Carney and Dolores Bush, Majorettes. The drummers were Robbie Hunter and Jerry Douglas, snare drummers; and Gradylene Smith bass drummer. Flag bearers were Imogene Brashear and Mary Walker. Mascots were Fay and Floyd Carter. During the season many changes were made. Mrs. Floyd Carter was elected sponsor after Miss Taylor resigned. Bobbie Bledsoe withdrew and Dolores Bush was elected head Majorette. Gradylene Smith was elected majorette; Imogene Brashear, bass drummer, Virginia Coleman, flag bearer. Our uniform was a pleated skirt made of white Indian head linen, with white blouses and last year’s battlejackets; leaders wore white ballerina skirts with blue boleros; drummers had blue skirts and boleros. Head majorette wore a white suit and the other two majorettes wore blue suits. Our most spectacular formation was made during the half of the Thanksgiving Day gai e with Whitewright when Dolores Bush was crowned Football Queen. Jack Miller L. H. The rest of the squad consisted of Vincent Tate, Bennie Edwards, Billy Simpson, Lindy Harris, Ralph Rigsby. Frank Purdom, Billy Ballard, Paul Purdom James Williams, Jesse Gracy, Charlie Huddleston, Kenneth Walker, Carroll Hughes, Billy Russell, Buddy Reeves, Luther Bradly, and Bobby Jack Murray. Bergie Stuteville and Ray Chandler were co-captains and Billy Ray Judkins was manager. R. R. Hyman was coach. We had a fast, hard-hitting team. We lost two heart-breaking games by a one point margin. They were to Whitesboro and Pilot Point. We played our best games the nights we played Howe and Sherman B. We were ready for them both physically and mentally and we went out to win. Whitewright gave us our one bad defeat. We want the Panthers of 1949 to bring the District Championship back to Van Alstyne. The boys have it in them if they'll only put it out. The scores of the 1948 season are as follows: Van Alstyne 38 ” • 21 ______ ” ” 32 ” ” 20 ” _41_ ” 13 34 ” ______0 Princeton ______6. Sherman B 12 Whitesboro _____7_ Gunter 0. JACKIE RAY DELANO AND NELSON REDDEN JAKE BERGIE NELSON 38 BASKETBALL SEASON AT A GLANCE The Pantherettes began basketball practice immediately after the close of the Pep Squad activities. Some of the girls had gotten eager and were already working out when regular practice sessions were called. This enthusiasm was maintained throughout the year, and was largely responsible for our record of nineteen victories and only four defeats. Bobbie Tillett and Carrie McLain were elected Co-Captains and Superintendent J. E. Poindexter was coach. Girls playing basketball were: Bobbie Tillett, Georgia Mullenix, Jerry Douglas, Carrie McLain, Ola Rae Terry, Loraine Gaskill, Gradylene Smith, Doris McNeese, Mary Walker, Bobbie Trotter, Joyce Jay, Maury Hix, Ruby Hix, June Martin, Bobbie Short, and Carlene Morris. The Panthers began their basketball practice after the conclusion of the Football season. They got off to a slightly slower start than the girls, but ended up winning ten out of nineteen games. Both boys and girls teams were undefeated in Conference play. In fact, the girls have not lost a regular Conference game for the past four years, winning the District Championship two years and losing in the play-offs the other two years. The boys showed a constantly improving team, and with the interest they showed they promise fair to become a power in this district’s basketball competition. Boys playing basketball were: Eugene Justice, Billy Russell, Bergie Stuteville, Ray Chandler, Jackie Miller, Benny Edwards, Robbie Caldwell, Delbert Justice, Delano Cavender, Pervis Harmon, Charles Huddleston, and Billy Simpson. We sincerely hope the readers of this Annual will not be of this type, for to us the advertising pages are the most important in the book. They are most important because it would be impossible for us to publish an Annual of this type without financial assistance. But more important to us than this is the fact that they are a concrete example of the loyal support the citizens and friends of our community always give our school and its activities. May “The Panthers” of today, and of the future, continue to conduct themselves so our friends will be glad to say, “Always Proud of The Panthers”, “We're Backing The Panthers 100' L ”, “Congratulations “Compliments ... ”, and other nice things contained in the following Pages.
