From a Different Angle Within days of our arrival at Valparaiso each se- mester, the blinders of routine begin to obscure our view. The novelty of the University setting fades away, leaving behind a disinterest in the objects around us. Consider, for example, the University Chapel. Once the weight of academia hits, this mag- nificient structure evokes little more attention from many than, perhaps, as an obstacle to walk around on the way to Gellerson or Meier. Yet, with just a little observation, many other roles of the Chapel may be found. What else is there to say about the Chapel? How about the fact that the world's largest collegiate cha- pel is located right here in our obscure little corner of Indiana? And beyond sheer size is beauty. Rising from the emptiness of the tundra like some massive phoenix, all the buildings of new campus seem to cower in shame at the innate grace embodied in such a masterful marriage of size and simplicity. From highway 30, the Chapel appears to be holding down the hill on which it stands. From McDonaid's, the top rises above Alumni Hall like a shepherd, ever watch- ful over the structures on new campus that they may fall into no harm. Laura Gatz Ingrid Anderson
,4 w 4 The striking contrast between size and grace is found in the Sunday worship services also. What seems to be a community of all believers at the late service with its crowds of people and powerful music is offset by the stark isolation that seems to envelope the early service. The singing of the con- gregation is easily drown out by the power of the organ. One almost feels as it the Chapel is present for his worship alone. The fine beams of light that radiate outward from the hanging fixtures on a brisk, winter's night seem to reach right into oneis soul. The majesty of the starry skies is encompassed by these beams adding to the illusion that the heavens themselves are brought within the Chapel walls. Consider the Chapel of the Resurrection then as the focal point of the University, in physical loca- tion, beauty, spiritual life and as a symbol of the goals and objectives of Valparaiso University. Taking the time to re-examine the ordinary that surrounds our lives can give new insight into just how special this campus really is. Take the time, then, to look at Valparaiso Universityitrom a dif- ferent angle! --Mike Riethmeier Laura Gatz
