The freshman class used to be initiated into its new world by participating in several traditions. Many of these traditions have disappeared: the freshman parade down Lincolnway, the beanies of freshmen which were worn for several months, and the class rush in which freshmen and sophomores vied for possession of a beanie by climbing up a post. Of course, some aspects of being a freshman have remained unchanged: the first goodbye to parents, the Dunes picnic, the excitement of making new friends, and the freedom of being away from home for the first time. Some aspects of graduation have al- so remained unchanged: the Baccalaureate service in the Chapel on Sunday morning, the outdoor ceremony held on Old Campus in the afternoon for the awarding of degrees, the fond good-byes to special friends, the feeling of leaving a place where you were nurtured with love.

fa-.W W .. a. .4 ,.f,, , To open a yearbook with scenes of graduation may seem unusual, but this year's BEACON focuses on the fact that the class of 1974 is the one-hundreth graduating class of Valparaiso University. As seniors graduate, they often realize how quickly time has passed since their first days at Valpo as freshmen. Many stu- dents, however, seem to remain oblivious to any awareness of time before or beyond the present moment. The one-hundreth graduation is a reminder ofthe history of this university, of time which has passed. It is the hope of the editors of this yearbook to offer a small sense of some ofthe history of Valparai- so University through glimpses of past mo- ments of time.
