Chapel break for some of us coffee break for most of us what about chapel anyway? there it is in the center of our campus doors always open trying to bring itself back to the center of our lives we have, many of us, been reared in the Lutheran tradition of Dubuque Greenfield New York City but we are, many of us, questioning all that with our minds with our lives sometimes God seems like the unwanted child in the marriage between our lives and the world and other times God helps when nothing else can but the church is not God and we find it difficult to reconcile the two THE CHANCEL IS FQQ V was; my mag 75 76 77 78 145m 12m: 253?. w 79 1m. ,. .. .. r; .2. at :thM 3.3.. t. 31 ; 1.35.3 I. $32.; 3; . , . 5:; y at i J... .L... 2. .3. ,w the grand design of the technological city , has reached valparaiso too 1 our town lookslike phoenix or los angeles or our big brother Chicago which is famous for its pig-packing plants and its friendly corner cops 84 but what goes on in valparaiso is not directed toward us and we think little about our city we really don't give a damn what happens outside where lovely old ladies raise see-through flags as the sun also rises 85 86 N sometimes there are election headquarters in valparaiso for Republicans and Democrats and then Mr. Roudebush races Mr. Hartke Sprague takes on Earl and a candidate for county assessor passes out shot glasses and sundry other battles begin for Very Important Positions some of us work for our man though most of us college kids laugh about it all after november election headquarters are left empty and campaign signs are forgotten and their world resumes another course the normal course the course which centers perhaps on Christmas and Easter the two biggest shopping seasons we aren't absolutely Separate communities of course they welcome us in the fall and we buy pizza and beer and clothes we watch their movies we go to Fetla's and look for Eternal Happiness tit must be there-they have everything else find a ten dollar coat and buy a huge can of beans to eat for a month 91 r, 3;? xi H9 profs have birthdays too and since they've had more years for practice than we have they are usually better at blowing out all the little candles with one great windy puf'f m t 120 t i t t I22 a lot of stuff is thrown around in classrooms facts figures a few ideas if we didn't have professors throwing out all these things we might flounder forever lost in the Great Sea or at least forget thinking all together -but as it is we are usually free to do that anyway if we can pass tests and write a few papers -what thinking we do must come between classes with our special friends in our special places because the classroom is the professors' realm far more than not ?
