ttA signal erected on rocks or shoals as to warn of danger? Granted, thatts pretty heavy, but this has been a heavy year. Not that everything has been that ominous, not at all. But when we remind you in the next few pages of all the good times, it really wouldntt be fair not to point out some of the things that were or are a bit scary. fl? 1 s 7 F fa? That little enchanting line above was said at Pres- ident Huegliis inauguration by Paul Brandt, Pres- ident of the University Board of Directors. You have to admit that its got a lot in it. So we took what its saying ahe change, responsibility, living things and university thingi and put it together with some other witty sayings and came up with what is hopefully an approximation of what this year at Valpo has been all about. 17 Get used to thinking that there is nothing that Nature loves so well as to change existing forms and make new ones like them. Football Head Coach Norm Admundsen guided the Crusad- ers to their second ICC Championship in as many years. The 1968 ICC coach of the year lead the gridman to a 7 win and 2 loss season. Valpo placed three men on the first team aII-ICC offensive unit. They were Fred Donath, Scott Seider, and John Russert. Valparaiso dominated the aII-iCC Honorable Mention Defensive Team. The Crusaders placed Ken Weiss, John Mauman, Jack Sukup, Ralph Barnes, and Bill Kohn on that unit. The Crusaders put together an exciting and very successful season in 1969, providing the campus with an enthusiasm for football that can only assist the 1970 team in its bid for Valpots third consecu- tive ICC Crown next year. Basketball In the first 22 games of the 1969-70 season, the Valparaiso cagers have compiled an 11-11 record for Coach Gene Bartow. Only two of these losses have come at the hands of college division teams, which would indicate the caliber of competition on the Crusaderst schedule. Outstanding perfor- mances have been made by senior guard Bruce Lindner, who has been averaging 25 points per game, and Steve Niems, who has been averaging 14.8 points per game and is the teams leading re- bounder. This mediocre 11-11 record is not indicative of the exciting moments that have been provided by the club, such as John Searsi foul shot with no time left on the clock to down St. Joseph 85-84. Be- cause of its record against college division teams, the cagers are anticipating a bid to the NCAA Small College Tourney. Excitement is already mounting for next season due to the return of starters John Sears, Steve Niems, and Harold Green, along with the addition of members from a fantastic freshmen team. The diamond men successfully defended their conference title by powering their way to a 7-1 record. By winning 18 games while losing only 4 in the regular season, Valpo broke its record for most victories in one sea- son, a record which the 1968 team set. The 1969 Crusaders placed five men on the first string I.C.C. AII-Conference Team, Bruce Linder, Skip Coley, Randy Goede, Sheldon Ferguson, and Phil Ferina. Two other Crusaders, Torn Bonen and Joel Theiss, received honorable mention. Skip Coley, who led the l.C.C. in hitting c5241, fielding 0.0001, home runs t3; and runs scored t61, was also named the leagueis Most Valuable Player. The Crusader of- fense almost doubled the run output of their op- ponents as they scored 122 runs in 22 games for a 5.5 run per game average, while they allowed only 67 runs for a 3.0 run average. The Complement of this dynamic offense was a superb defense. The Crusaders committed only 34 errors in 743 chances for a .954 fielding average. Much of the credit for the Crusaders success must be given to the fine performance by the pitching staff. Randy Goede and Shelly Ferguson provided the nucleus of this staff with fine support coming from Jack Pettit and freshman Tim Juran. With many of his starters returning and the likelihood of receiving fine performances from several other experienced men, Coach Emory Bauer is looking forward to capturing Valparaisois 13th conference champion- ship in the last 20 years. By compiling an 8-4 record this year, the wrestling team, under coach Bill Steinbrecher, bettered last years 7-5 record, which itself was a fine season. Although the loss of last year's MVP Bob Montgom- ery left the Crusaders a little weaker in the low weights, the depth of the matmen came through and carried the team to victory. Valparaiso was nev- er questioned as Fred Donath, Dave Hansing, and Charlie Marks were standouts. Valpo has five con- ference champs to take to the ICC meet next week and there is little doubt that the Crusaders have the ability to take the crown for the second consecutive year. In the NCAA tcollege di- visiom National Meet, Dave finished 4th in the 50 and 8th in the 100 which entitled him to be aCoIIegiate AII-Ameri- can. The VU Soccer Club completed its sec- ond season of competition against varsities and clubs last fall with a 5-4-1 record. The team had to play itself into shape against tough competition early in the season. Valpo improved its de- fense and teamwork as the season progressed, and looked especially good against Loyola, Notre Dame, and Northwestern. Jigme Tsarong led the VU attack this year with nine goals, including a three-goal hat-trick against St. Joseph. He was helped out by Fred Mina, Mike Springer, Bob Schepens, and Mohammed Modassi. The defense was spearheaded by captain Ron Koepke, who with Bob Schepens went to the US Olympic tryouts this year. Steve Kamnetz, Mike Poellot, and Fred Zimonja at fullback and playing coach Keith Veiser, Paul Skinner, Mike Proesbstle and Bruce Kirby at half- backs, teamed with outstanding goalie Dan Meinzen, to form Valpois unusu- ally strong defensive line-up. Valpo loses only two seniors this year, Koepke and Kamnetz, and pros- pects are hopeful against next years tougher schedule, which includes Northern Illinois, Ball State and Purdue, and a trip to St. Louis.
