The tangible passport to Success . or so they tell us. iTTheyiT tell us a lot of things: ignore the double standard, go to Church on Sunday, and love your Mother, God, and Country. And if you get a chance, grow up Republican, Mis- souri Synod, play bridge, and Never learn what a Bagel is; Its easy. Adopt the prescribed values, accepted dress, and you get the Brass Ring, the $200, and never go to jail. But you canTt get anywhere without an education and everybody has to go somewhere-Logic, right? Therefore, polish that National Honor Society pin, apply for College: youire home Free. And with mother looking on Tearfully, your Fly zipped, and the Samsonite in hand, you hop on the Yel- low Brick road for the hmost wonderful four years of your life, . . . or so they tell us. It7s a trip tto use the current vernaculari to a culture seemingly quite alien to the one were being trained to enter. The exploration can take many forms, many routes, many degrees of Dedication depending on what the budget, the trailic and the Establishment Allows. That,s what its all about: The Great American Dream. A yellow brick expressway Trip in search of the world and its values and more importantly a search for your World and Your values. The Expressway ride is Fun. Most of us do it in a Mustang. Itls fitting your values with the Worldts values that causes the hang-up. tEnter the University, the Establishment dressed in Red, White, and Blue and Wing Tips with an apple Pie under its Right armJ Liking to admit it or not, itls this very Establishment that makes the road so Golden and teaches the line Art of integrating Your world and your Values to the one Outside-the one that in four years and a trip through the Big War we all have to live with and live in. As students we complain of diploma Mills and too much Goal orientation and it Exists. But this Four years of orientation can also give ample time for Personal exploration. No IBM card or teaching assistant can help you with that.
