This is valparaiso. But where does one go from there? The fact that it tlistl, that it exists is as close as a lot of people come to delining, describing, or other- wise eulogizing lldear ol, Valpofi A few words, somewhat more precise seem necessary to preserve for posterity tor our middle-age reminiscing the state of the University, 1967. Someplace between Berkeley-ville and Bible College-land lies the V.U. campus of l67. The protests are hardly up to Berkeley standardsafilthy word strikes ap- pear to be coniined to registration day, anti-Greek rivalries, and the day grades are posted. Activism here in l67 appears to be somewhat pseudo and put-on, more a trial reaction against the middle class world from whence we came and whither we proceed, than any real break from society. Yet, please remember, that we did think and we did act and more than anything else, we did talk. Una like the schools we choose to think of as over-protected, Valpo students are not closeted away for four years to learn in peace. Someone here seems to have discovered that learning is best done in turmoil, or at least in slight commotioni We are exposed, although cautiously, lest oneis toes get burned, to the world of the big people. Itts not a plunge mind you, or a swan dive or even a belly flop, but rather a run along the beachaa nice, clean Pollyanna sort of beachawith a dart every now and then into the shallow bubbles of the big, black sea. To continue the geography lesson, in Berkeley-land tand all the multiversity places like i0 there are no trees. No trees . i . no shade so, all the Berkely-land people get sunburned, and sun-stroked and generally over-exposed. At times they are also ridiculous. Bible College-Ville lies in a big German forest twhi'ch, of course, cannot be seen for all the treesy It,s pleasant there but a bit too much shade. We all know that this can lead to Vitamin deficiencies and other problems due to the lack of sunshine. When the B.C.-ville kids do get into the sunlight tafter grad- uationi theytre not prepared for all that vitamin D. As a result they sometimes become even more over-exposed and more ridiculous than the Berkeley-land people. Now for the moral of the story: we stand in the sunshineaGodE good lightuluce tuaaand were allowed to be free and independent and grow up to be strong healthy girls and boys as our moms wanted us to. And yet there are always the protective shade treesglike that big oak 0n the south lawn of the Chapel-where we can return now and then when the sun gets too searing. Welre gung-ho enough to think that this is the best kind of place to grow up and to get an educationwin the broadest sense of the word. We like to call it freedom in the shade,

the aware people in the increasingly mechanical, IBMized world there is something which draws us to a certain kind of peoplew eccentric, pensive, creative, charming, tender, brilliant, clown i i . we delight in the unusual man, he who has not been mass produced to talk, look, act and even bathe like the 10070 red, white, and blue typical american of the t.v. commercial. we value those who simply cannot be replaced by wires, tubes and transistors. above all, we are impressed, infiuenced 0r angered by those who dare, for better or for worse, not merely to existe but to live.
