Frerbmmz rienmtion Moving in bag and baggage, our freshmen of l962 typified the usual newcomers on campus. Bur- dened with possessions, they unloaded cars in a state of confusion. This was only the beginning of their orientation to Valparaiso, lfollowed by a week of activities to familiarize them with their class- mates beliore the upperclassmen returned to campus. Among the scheduled events were the annual dunes party, lectures, placement exams, and mass blind dating where a floor ol: a mens dormitory escorted a floor of a womenls dormitory. When the upperclassmen returned, the freshmen endured a week of squaring their pots, buttoning, reciting Valpo's history, and singing Valpo's songs. On Stunt Night, all negligent freshmen were pun- ished with tasks to further acquaint them with founders' rock. student bridge, and the fraternities.

omecomin Because Valparaiso students want to make a warm and memorable welcome to their alumni, 1962 Homecoming activities galore were planned. lVeeks of preparation succeeded in planning events that familiarized alumni with present Valpo life and re- newed acquaintances with their own Valpo life. The weekends activities began Friday morning, as is the tradition, with the playing of the roving German Band, which signaled the end of classes and the arrival of the alumni. All afternoon, fraternities, sororities, and dormitories competed in the cheer contest. In this way, enthusiasm for Saturdayls foot- ball game reached its peak among the students and spirited the team. Lambda Chi and Alpha Phi Delta won first place in the men's and women's competi- tion. Folk singers Peter, Paul, and Mary provided bril- liant entertainment to a full house Friday night. Following the concert Queen Gail Pitkanen received her crown, and Lembke and Sigma Tau received first place awards for dormitory and house decora- tions.
