g Yesterdayls Ideals Are ff It is the year of our Lord-one thousand, nine hundred, and fifty-nine. It is the Centennial year of Valparaiso University's founding. We ask ourselves, What has transpired in the past one hundred years? What have been the vicissitudes which culminated into Valpo's Way of Life? We, the staff of the 1959 Beacon, have not pre- sented a complete history of Valparaiso University in the past one hundred years. It was decided that such an endeavor could be more adequately met in the Centennial Committees publication of the uni- versity's history. Carried Forth in Todays It is our hope that by showing the traditions we have at Valparaiso today, we will be able to show you parts of our past, that is, the customs and ideals which have rooted, sprung up, and flowered into the way of life we label our own. It is our hope also, that by the progresses we have made in this blessed year of 195 9, we can indicate the growth and enrich- ment of Valparaiso's future. Therefore, our theme is Tradition and Progress which we present through pictures, script, and art- work in hopes of stirring your thoughts and memo- ries about this year in the years to come.
