100 Years Is a Loooooong Time A NOTE OF CAUTION TO THE READER: The material contained herein is a combination of both fact and fiction, and it is left to the reader to decide which is which. With the excellent background you developed at the Tech, you should have no trouble picking out the Bull. When I first signed up to attend Valparaiso Technical In- stitute, I wasn't sure I was doing the right thing. Sucha small school, it seemed, could go wheels up very easily. My suspicions were confirmed one day, when the Valpo Tech sign out in the field was replaced with a church sign. I was all set to start searching for another school. That next fall, however, the Tech did open up, much to the delight of hundreds of students. (Remember the warning) Well, it turns out they opened up just so they could celebrate the 100th anniversary and we could publish this wonderful book.

As Industry Changes, So Does V.T.I. a aE Back before hair was invented, the Tech was brought to ‘life. Some of the teachers, as a matter of fact, are ori- ginal equipment. This was before the invention of the automobile, as some of the expressions hint. 'Two horses in Parallel and two bicycles in Tandem can still be heard. During the school's history, it has had several different names; some official titles, others just terms of endearment used by the students. Although ‘Valparaiso Technical Institute sounds long winded, it was a vast improvement over 'Dodge's Telegraph, Railway accounting, and Radio Institute, '' the name adopted in the 30's. The shorter name resulted in a wider path to the driveway, and hence, an increase in enrollment. Probably the biggest boom to hit the campus was in the early 50's. Virtually tons of surplus test equipment hit the campus. Most of the equipment in the labs today can be traced to some foxhole in WWII.
