With the excellent background you developed at the Tech, you should have no trouble picking out the Bull. When I first signed up to attend Valparaiso Technical In- stitute, I wasn't sure I was doing the right thing. Sucha small school, it seemed, could go wheels up very easily. My suspicions were confirmed one day, when the Valpo Tech sign out in the field was replaced with a church sign. I was all set to start searching for another school. That next fall, however, the Tech did open up, much to the delight of hundreds of students. (Remember the warning) Well, it turns out they opened up just so they could celebrate the 100th anniversary and we could publish this wonderful book. As Industry Changes, So Does V.T.I. a aE Back before hair was invented, the Tech was brought to ‘life. Some of the teachers, as a matter of fact, are ori- ginal equipment. This was before the invention of the automobile, as some of the expressions hint. 'Two horses in Parallel and two bicycles in Tandem can still be heard. During the school's history, it has had several different names; some official titles, others just terms of endearment used by the students. Although ‘Valparaiso Technical Institute sounds long winded, it was a vast improvement over 'Dodge's Telegraph, Railway accounting, and Radio Institute, '' the name adopted in the 30's. The shorter name resulted in a wider path to the driveway, and hence, an increase in enrollment. Probably the biggest boom to hit the campus was in the early 50's. Virtually tons of surplus test equipment hit the campus. Most of the equipment in the labs today can be traced to some foxhole in WWII. The 60's brought rapid change to the electronics indus- . try when solid state replaced vacuum tubes. Tech stu- dents were right up with the changes; they could blow up transistors with the best of them. Electronics is really only a sideline at the Tech. The buildings have housed the first Valpo power plant, an aerosol can factory, a glass bottle factory, a bowling alley, and a roller rink, to mention a few. Currently the building contains a radio station, a book mobile hq., and a newspaper press. All in all, the Tech is a good bet, because the industry figures, if you can make it through here, you can make it through anything. Student council representatives are elected during first semester, and serve as long as they are in school. The Council is responsible for all the various clubs, and alots them money every year for their needs. They also sponsor student activities, such as the picnics, a pizza blast, and campus clean up. 10 Dorm Council The dorm council is respon- sible for the dorm residents' welfare and happiness. Haven't they done a won- derful job? Some of the major activities this year were holding pizza blasts, changing a few old dorm rules, and purchasing new furniture for the lobbies. Standing is the president George Henegar. Keeping up with what's happening now is a very difficult task in the electronics field. The IEEE does keep up, be- cause they are the pacesetters, the decision makers. The student branch here at the Tech provided guest speakers and films to keep the students in touch with the industry. 16 The Instrument Society of America, like the IEEE, is a student branch of a national organization. The students have a spring banquet and, along with the IEEE, help sponsor the spring field trips. Every Wednesday, three man teams compete in a game series, not only for troph- ies, but for relaxation. eee rede Results from the spring semester: First Place was easily taken by First Place team members Rick Fornelli, John Hayes, and Larry Speath. Second place was won by Turkey Soup, team.members Ken Yergler, Von Klausman, and Keith Blaney. Brute Force beat The Good, Bad and the Ugly in a roll off for third. This team consisted of Nancy Tonkovich, Tom Nelson, and Bob Dunkle. Bob also won high series with handicap with a 647. Other special trophies were High Series - John Hayes 598, High Game - Bob Bassett 225, High Game with Handicap - Keith Smith 247. Don Hewlett was the most improved bowler. 19 A quote from the paper will probably best describe this year's school paper. The school paper has gone thru several changes in its history. The names have been chosen in an attempt to reflect the state of the art in electronics for that particular era. A few of the names our academic predecessors came up with are the Spark Gap, Grid Leak, Keyer, and the more recent Modulator. The present name of the paper, 7400, commemorates this year of 1974 as being the 100th year of the school. The name also refers to the 7400 series of logic integrated circuits which is current state of the arte! 7400 Appears Seven Times Valtechnian Staff Remi Adedoyin (business manager), Kent Merideth (asst. editor), Keith Blaney (copy), and Blaine Tippett (layout). Not pictured were Betsy Wood (Sales) and Tom Murray (asst. editor). The cover was designed by Jeff Pennington. Other artwork was done by John Groot. Pat Lindemann was our publishing consultant. The students decided that a yearbook should be published this year, in honor of the school's 100th year. So five fools and the photography club volunteered for the job. Deadlines were missed, sales were low, but the book was a success. (?) 21 This year the photography club was responsible for taking all the shots in the yearbook. This necessitated the seed of creativity to be sewn into otherwise worthless individuals. (Just kidding, folks. They did cause several delays, but the pictures that were taken and developed by the students were of high quality. ) (?) Audio Club 26 si aa pene omen m,n geranium ee aad nga Field trips, guest speakers, and fund raising activities all help the audio club to be one of the most popular clubs on campus. The main reason, however, is that most everyone at the Tech is interested in audio. What makes the audio club unique is that the club room has an atmosphere that can provide for a . member a place to relax and listen to music on a high quality system .. . in short, the audio club is anything a member desires.
